  • Nike Air Pegasus+ 27 General Info:

Born in 1983, The Pegasus is Nike’s most popular cushioning shoe. Over nearly thirty years this shoe has been consistant in providing neutral or slightly under-pronating runners with a lightweight shoe for their everyday training. The Pegasus+ 27 comes in summer 2010 with updates both to the upper and the sole unit, in two gender specific versions.

  • Nike Air Pegasus+ 27 Sole Unit:

The sole unit of the Pegasus 27 is new. Very similar to the sole unit present in the Pegasus 25 and 26, this shoe has a Nike Air unit in the heel to absorb the impact of the heel to the ground. The midsole material went from Phylon to Cushlon, a Nike-developed foam that provides shock absorption but is resilient: the foam springs back and returns to its original shape, ready for the next step.
We find a crash pad under the heel: the heel is broken into different pods (gender-specific: the structure and layout of the mens differs from the womens version) so to absorb the impact where the foot lands, limiting the transmission of the shock to the rest of the foot.
Under the medial (internal) side of the arch we find a light shank, a piece of TPU (plasti material) that connects the heel area of the sole unit to the forefoot area providing just enough stability to help control pronation and to insure that the foot stays in a natural position during the gait.
The forefoot offers deeper flex grooves (the horizontal carves in the outsole) to insure flexibility (we find it very flexible). The flex grooves are also gender specific: women have less body mass than men and therefore need the grooves to be carved deeper into the midsole to achieve the same flexibility.
The outsole (the part of the shoe that is in contact with the road) has the usual Nike BRS1000 carbon rubber to insure the right traction but also be able not to deteriorate too soon.
As in all the Nike running shoes, the Pegasus has a pocket in the midsole to insert the Nike+ sensor.

  • Nike Air Pegasus+ 27 Upper:

With not much to change in the midsole, Nike decided to focus the efforts in improving the fit of the upper. A semi-bootie, seamless construction accommodates the forefoot reducing the chances of chafing and irritation. The synthetic leather overlays have been adjusted around the toebox and especially the arch to keep the foot in place during the run. The mesh is open, but not one of the most breathable we observed this year.
We like the addition of a removable Dual layer Ortholite sockliner: a quality component for a mid-priced shoe, adds extra cushioning right under the foot.

  • Nike Air Pegasus+ 27 Opinion:

The Pegasus+ 27 stays true to its legacy but most of all to the thousands and thousands of runners that love it. For the 90$ suggested retail price-tag, this shoe is quite rich in the attention to details it has been given. It’s an all-round shoe that is meant to fit a wide array of different runners. We praise the true gender-specific engineering.
In summary: the Pegasus+ 27 is a good update to a shoe that was good to start with, and has been for a while. It is ideal for the average neutral or slightly under-pronating runner that wants a solid shoe for his/her everyday training.
Runners looking for a softer, even more cushioned ride should look into the Pegasus’ big sister, the Nike Vomero+ 5.
