K-Swiss will also debut quick-transition and minimalist entries to round out running portfolio and provide styles for every runner from training to race day.

BLADE-MAX™ SERIES

Following the Fall 2011 introduction of Blade-Max™ in K-Swiss’ first trail runner, the maximum cushioning technology will be featured in three new styles. Blade-Max™ Technology features athlete engineered bladed Superfoam®, a space-aged energy-return foam that resists compression and lasts longer, providing cushioning and comfort. The anatomically-placed ‘blades’ align to the angle of impact providing progressive cushioning. These blades also act as an independent suspension and allow for increased traction due to blades’ self-cleaning ability. Loose gravel and sand are swept away with each foot strike because of blades’ angled design.

Blade-Max™ Stable

A stability running shoe featuring a dynamic medial post and GuideGlide™, a unique midsole construction that centers the foot from heel-to-toe ensuring a more comfortable and stable ride. A very supportive upper featuring the heat welded SeamFree™ technology and an external heel counter for unparalleled comfort and fit. A market that had but a handful of shoes in years past is now flooded with makes and models featuring different foams, midsoles, treads, and uppers. The breadth of features and forms provide runners looking to shed bulkier shoes a wealth of options, allowing runners to find a shoe for any running style or body frame.

New incarnations of old classics have shaved off weight, reduced materials, lowered heel-to-toe drop, and have become more utilitarian. Brand-new models include the latest barefoot and minimalist running research while employing the newest fabrics and lightest foam composites on the market. Though choosing the right shoe for a runner’s first foray into minimal models can seem intimidating, following a few simple guidelines can help make the decision easy and rewarding.

Weight, Cushioning, and Design: Important Factors in Choosing a Minimal Shoe

Barefoot and minimalist experts stress the importance of making a slow transition out of traditional and corrective running shoes. Modern shoe design provides an extensive amount of cushioning on the heel, allowing many runners to land on their heels in a fashion that would not be possible in a less-cushioned shoe without experiencing tremendous pain. In minimal shoes, however, the amount of cushioning built into the heel of the shoe is drastically reduced. By reducing heel cushioning, runners are forced into correcting bad habits and find themselves moving their strike from the heel to the mid and forefoot.

To assist runners looking to switch to minimalist shoes, many brands have introduced lightweight models which still incorporate medial and heel support systems. Shoes with these additional support mechanisms provide many runners with an opportunity to gradually reduce the amount of correction the shoe forces upon the foot. By featuring smaller differentials between the heel and the forefoot (known as heel-to-toe drop), runners are able to learn proper technique by having all portions of the foot on a more equal height from the ground. These features help runners learn proper form while lessening the role of the running shoe in developing gait and technique.

Tale of the Tape: A Breakdown of Introductory Models for Minimalist Running

The models listed below range the gamut of options for runners looking to make the minimal switch. Some models feature medial and arch support systems, while others are more similar to a racing flat with very little cushioning. As the biomechanics of runners vary greatly, it is imperative to choose a shoe based upon a thorough knowledge of one’s own running style. The list is not exhaustive by any means, and the degree of minimalism in the shoes below varies greatly. Please let us know in the comment what do you think!

Adidas

Adidas adiZero Adios

Adidas adiZero Mana

The adiZero Adios and the adiZero Mana 5 weigh in at 7.4 and 7.7 oz, respectively, and feature an 11 millimeter differential. The adiZero Mana 5 also boasts additional medial support, providing extra relief for arches which is not always seen in many minimal models.

Asics

Asics DS Racer 8

Asics Gel Tarther

Asics Hyperspeed

The Asics DS Racer 8 is the latest shoe in the company’s successful line. Weighing in at 7.9 oz, the shoe features a 9 millimeter differential, a Solyte foam Midsole, and many of the familiar features of previous incarnations of the Asics favorite.

The Asics Hyperspeed 4 and Asics Gel Tarther both take the minimal approach a step further. The Hyperspeed 4 features an SpEVA midsole for added, lightweight cushioning, and both models include a racing trussic system to increase foot turnover by mimicking the movement of foot ligaments. The two models are designed to be all-around racing flats that are also ready for the daily use of a cross-trainer.

Brooks

Brooks Launch

Brooks Green Silence

The Brooks Launch is designed to be a neutral trainer which can provide support for longer races without adding bulky cushioning. The shoe is a strong candidate for runners looking to segue from supportive shoes to minimal running: the flexible outsole of the shoe, along with the 9.5 mm differential and the 9.1 oz weight of the model provides an excellent foray into minimal running without sacrificing support. Designed to be a cross-trainer for daily wear, the Launch could be a good fit for transitioning to minimalist running.

The Brooks Green Silence takes the company’s minimal designs a step further, reducing the shoe weight to 7.2 oz and the heel-to-toe drop of 8 mm. What’s more, the shoe features a breathable upper and soy-based inks—promoting environmental conservation through the extensive use of recycled materials.

Mizuno

Mizuno Wave Ronin 3

Mizuno Wave Musha 3

The Mizuno Wave Ronin 2 builds upon the form and function of the model’s first incarnation, featuring a durable outsole design, a mesh upper for ventilation and lightweight flexibility, and a design built around runners with a neutral gait. The Wave Ronin 2 features a 9 mm differential and weighs a scant 7.6 oz.

The Mizuno Wave Musha 3 also provides an excellent experience for runners looking to transition to minimalist shoe design. Weighing 8 oz, the model is designed to provide support within a minimalist frame: with a 9 mm heel-to-toe differential, the Musha 3 features a forefoot with blown and solid rubber composites for lightweight strength that doesn’t sacrifice cushioning for weight.

New Balance

New Balance Minimus

The New Balance Minimus marks the company’s first full foray into the minimalist market. With three different models in their new line (the Minimus Trail, Minimus Road, and Minimus Life), the shoes feature a mesh upper, lightweight foam midsoles, and flexible soles for gripping terrain of any type. With a no-sew construction and slight heel-to-toe differentials, the Minimus series provides a strong yet familiar entry into minimalist running for the company.

Nike

Nike Zoom Streak 3

Nike Lunaracer

Nike Free v7

As one of the first conventional shoe manufacturers to market minimalist shoe designs to the mainstream running community, Nike offers a wide range of models catering to minimalist runners. The Zoom Streak 3 and Lunaracer+ 2 feature lightweight designs that still place a strong emphasis on support. The Lunaracer+ 2 provides support for overpronators in its medial arch support, one of the few minimalist models to do so.

The popular Free series includes updates to the available models as well. The Free 7.0 and Free Run+ provide some of the most flexible soles in the market, featuring deep grooves which allows the shoe to conform to uneven terrain and foot movements. The Free 7.0 features a more cushioned heel than the Free Run+, a helpful feature for heel strikers. Both models feature a mesh upper and offset lacing design for a glove-like fit.

Pearl Izumi

Pearl Izumi Streak

The Pearl Izumi Streak is the first and only foray the brand has made into minimalist shoe design, outside of conventional racing flats. The Peregrine received the highest marks from the Runner’s World Shoe Lab, the 200 wear-testers and the editors. The Peregrine is a minimally constructed, low profile trail running shoe that allows the foot to run uninhibited over the most technical terrain.

“The entire Saucony team is honored to be recognized by Runner’s World,” said
Patrick O’Malley, senior vice president of global product for Saucony. “We knew we
had something special early on when we first tested these shoes and this significant acknowledgement from the running community proves that our instincts were right. We approached this project with a different point of view, and by doing so, created a new standard in the trail running category. This award inspires all of us in our commitment to meaningful product innovation and performance for runners everywhere.”

The Peregrine is the second Saucony shoe in the past 12 months to win one of Runner’s World magazine’s prestigious awards. In the publication’s 2010 Summer Shoe Buyer’s Guide, the Saucony ProGrid™ Kinvara, a minimally constructed, lightweight performance training shoe for neutral runners, was awarded “Best Debut.”

“The new Peregrine is fast and lightweight, with enough traction to climb up steep, loose trails,” said the Runner’s World review of the Peregrine. “The shoe is also built low to the ground … Our testers loved the resulting low ride and the heel fit of the Peregrine, which many referenced as ‘no slip.’ The shoe’s snug heel lock prevents foot irritation on uneven rock-strewn trails,” added the reviewers.
Runner’s World wear-testers lauded that the Peregrine is “just what a trail shoe should be: low profile, stable and light, with good foot protection.”

The ProGrid Peregrine allows runners to not only run the trail, but connect with it, thanks to its ultra-flexible, low-rider profile. The shoe’s sticky and dynamic outsole is engineered with a dual compound making it supple enough to grip on slick rock, yet firm enough to bite into dirt, snow and mud.

Louvered perimeter lugs made of a high traction rubber compound deliver both grip and response for off-camber surfaces. Multidirectional lugs engineered with XT-900™ carbon rubber in the forefoot and heel feature alternated orientation for uphill thrust and downhill braking while providing confidence-inducing traction.

The Peregrine is designed with a midsole height differential (difference between heel and forefoot heights) of just four millimeters, allowing the foot to move naturally and uninhibited while increasing the runner’s proprioception and balance over tricky trails. Saucony’s lightest cushioning technology, Heel ProGrid™ LITE, and the midsole’s super-light SSL EVA both maximize rebound while minimizing weight. An External Bedrock Outsole (EBO) protects the foot from rocks, roots and other underfoot hazards.

The Peregrine’s foot-hugging upper offers a lightweight, quick-drying mesh with no-sew minimal overlays for a secure fit. A soft, pliable, microfiber material along the medial arch helps lockdown the foot over uneven ground, and a minimal tongue with soft EVA pads protects the foot from lace bite.

The Peregrine’s higher density collar foam and a removable EVA sockliner add to the shoe’s lightweight comfort. A gusseted tongue helps keep trail debris out while a D-ring makes the shoe compatible with gaiters for snowshoeing or extreme adventure runs.

The ProGrid Peregrine, now available at select specialty run retailers, comes in men’s sizes 7-13, and 14, and women’s sizes 5-12. The suggested retail price of the ProGrid Peregrine is $90.00. Despite having more choices in shoe styles, people tend to have a love hate relationship with their shoes. Wouldn’t it be great if you could create a shoe that has everything you want? Now you can. It’s called Somnio. This is the only customized running shoe on the market today.

Somnio’s exclusive system lets you create nearly any shoe with almost endless possibilities. This is accomplished with the use of three interchangeable components that use a runner’s particular running style and unique biomechanics to custom fit the ideal shoe for that individual by focusing on factors such as correct arch support, running surface and the weight of the runner. The ultimate goal is achieve a proper alignment among the ankle, foot and lower leg.

The idea behind Somnio shoes is simple. Running shoes should fit the runner, not the other way around. Somnio shoes use the company’s exclusive Functionally Engineered Adaptable Tricomponent System (F.E.A.T.). featuring customizable components able to be adjusted to achieve the ideal gait-efficient fit for the runner. Runners have a selection of six base models (Stability, Motion Control, Trail, Neutral, Lightweight Neutral, Cushioned Motion Control) and 12 adjustable inserts with 11,664 possible configurations per shoe size to create the ideal running shoe for men and women.

The customizable parts of Somnio shoes include:

• Interchangeable foot-beds designed to fit a runner’s arch height
• Interchangeable IndX cushion inserts to provide customized cushioning based on a runner’s weight and usage
• Tunable Varus angulation to fit a runner’s biomechanical needs

Somnio shoes help runners get the most out of an active and busy lifestyle while getting the most out of the experience. Those who run on a regular basis enjoy a number of additional health benefits. Unfortunately, running with a shoe not properly designed for your feet can cause a whole new set of health issues, especially for your feet and lower legs. Somnio solves that problem and allows you to enjoy the full benefits of running and a healthy, active life.

Somnio’s customized running shoes help relieve many foot problems common among runners. Common foot ailments from running shoes not properly fitted or adjusted include blisters, subungual hematoma or black toenails (commonly associated with long distance running), bunions (may result in joint swelling), corns, numbness or a tingling sensation (usually caused by wearing running shoes that are too tight or that do not fit the foot correctly) and Plantar Fasciitis (an inflammation of tissue at the bottom of the foot).

Somnio shoes have been tested on real runners to refine the specific designs and identify common problem areas runners experience. Somnio’s unique customized running shoe has been named the Must Have Gear for 2010 by National Geographic Adventure and Best Custom Fit by Women’s Running. Somnio running shoes are designed to target the basic parts of a running shoe in relation to the wearer’s feet to allow the shoe to fit the runner.

Somnio (“dream” in Latin) was founded in 2009 by Sean Sullivan following chronic pain he experienced while running. Sullivan went to Boulder Center for Sports Medicine and discovered the problem was with his shoes. Sullivan created Somnio with the concept that running shoes should be designed to adapt to the runner by preventing better biomechanics and a personalized fit to provide a better running experience.

Merrell Launches the Barefoot Running Education Site

General Info

News

Press Release

Previews

2011

barefoot

lightweight

merrell

minimal

running

Merrell will introduce the Merrell Bareform Training Technique that incorporates proper running form, body strengthening and a flexibility regime for top condition training.

Merrell Barefoot Running Screenshot

ROCKFORD, Mich. (February 1, 2011) – In tandem with its first barefoot collection of shoes hitting market, Merrell launches a new microsite, merrell.com/barefoot, the “go-to” resource on how to begin and train for barefoot running and adventure. As part of the launch, Merrell will introduce the Merrell Bareform Training Technique that incorporates proper running form, body strengthening and a flexibility regime for top condition training. Partnering with key barefoot and running ambassadors, such as Walt Reynolds, a top trainer, coach and owner of NovaSport Athlete Development, and Jason Robillard, barefoot ultra marathoner and founder of the Barefoot Running University, the site will introduce barefoot adventure to fans through videos, tips and news articles related to the growing barefoot movement.

“As we looked at the fast-paced barefoot movement and listened to key influencers in barefoot running and lifestyle, we realized there was no place consumers could go to learn about the necessary training and education needed for barefoot adventure,” said Craig Throne, vice president of global marketing manager at Merrell. “As we introduce an entire collection of barefoot shoes with the goal of getting more people outside having fun, we want to make sure there is a resource so that runners and outdoor enthusiasts don’t just jump into a pair of barefoot or minimalist shoes without the proper background.”
“My primary decision to work with Merrell was based on their dedication to education around barefoot,” said Jason Robillard, barefoot ultra marathoner and founder of the Barefoot Running University. “To date, every other manufacturer of minimalist shoes has done a poor job of educating people about proper running gait when transitioning from traditional running shoes to minimalist shoes or barefoot. Merrell is the first to fill this education void, and I am more than happy to help them do so. My ultimate goal in the promotion of barefoot running has always been education. We can help fuel their enthusiasm about barefoot running while providing solid information to prevent them from injury.”

“I am a firm believer that everyone can ‘move better’ and barefoot is the best way to do so,” said Walt Reynolds, long-time trainer, coach and owner of NovaSport Athlete Development. “I am thrilled to help Merrell develop an educational program that supports their new barefoot line of shoes. The Merrell Bareform Training program combines the benefits of proper running form with total body conditioning, strength & mobility exercises that apply to hikers and climbers as well. This is a whole-body program that will benefit every active person, no matter what outdoor adventure they choose.”

This March Merrell is planning to introduce a barefoot training iPhone application designed to introduce runners and outdoor enthusiasts to the barefoot movement and provide the education needed to begin to run and move. There will be a mix of four training intervals to instruct on the natural way to run, with a midfoot to forefoot landing, and aids in developing ankle, knee and hip stability to promote good movement. The application will also host a Merrell Barefoot iTunes mix that is based on the 180 beat-per-minute cadence of a natural running stride.

Merrell Barefoot will be available at retail stores and on merrell.com in February. Merrell Barefoot blends minimalist design for added foot freedom with specific traction zones to meet the needs of any terrain – from street to trail. The designs help engage the feet for a more natural stride by moving the wearer off the heel and encouraging forward momentum to a mid-foot landing with lower impact and a more aligned and efficient gait. This technique helps stimulate and strength muscles strength in the legs and feet.

Merrell® is a brand within the Outdoor Group, a division of Wolverine World Wide, Inc. that also includes Chaco and Patagonia Footwear. He developed the NADA training DVD to help lead runners through strengthening exercises and form drills in order to help make a safe and pain-free transition into minimalist running.

“We see so many people jumping right into minimalist running without proper conditioning, often resulting in injury,” said Phil Wharton. “With the DVD, we’re providing Nada customers with an owner’s guide to minimalist running and empowering runners to stay in the game and stay healthy.”

“With Nada, we’re not just providing an amazing shoe, but also providing the information to help people get the right start,” said Sean Sullivan, president and founder of Somnio. “Whether they are adding minimalist running to their current exercise program or are just looking to make a change, our minimalist running starter pack provides all of the tools they need.”

The Nada shoe retails for $80 and is ideal for runners, yoga practitioners, walkers and anyone wanting a shoe that feels like they are wearing “nothing”. Nada shoes feature an ultra-thin six millimeter midsole to protect the foot, breathable stretch mesh to move with the foot and to accommodate a wide variety of foot shapes, zero heel to midsole drop for a natural foot position.

In addition to the Nada shoe, Somnio launched a customizable Spring 2011 line with updated design and styling of Somnio favorites. The promise is to deliver the lightest neutral trainer in the market (giving one ounce to their own NB 759 and to the Nike Lunar Glide). Weighing in at a mere 9.7 ounces (men’s 9.5), the New Balance 890 is the lightest shoe of its kind in the neutral cushioning category, the fastest growing segment in the running shoe industry. To achieve this lightness, the shoe doesn’t sacrifice cushioning, stability or durability, nor does it reduce underfoot cushioning or greatly minimize the construction, the stack heights, or change the heel to forefoot drop. Instead, through use of the REVlite midsole foam neutral runners have a surprisingly light running experience, but feel safe, secure, and comfortable treating this shoe as their high mileage trainer.

The overall fit of the 890 is soft and supple with a dialed in midfoot wrap, an open and rounded vamp, and comfortable, irritation-free flex points. The 890 features a delicate package but still with all the protection and durability required to endure lots of miles.

Here below you’ll find a gallery of all the colors (both mens and womens). So you went online or you visited your local running store and found out there’s more than one Lunar Nike shoe out there.

In 2010 Nike released four different lunar running shoes into the wild: the LunarGlide+, the LunarElite+, the LunarRacer+ and the LunarSwift+. What are the differences between these four and which one should you chose? To help you chose which Lunar shoes you want to run in, we compare them in the table below, ordered by the amount of support offered (highest to lowest).

LunarGlide+
It is the most supportive of the Lunar family. First shoe to introduce the Dynamic Support which consists of a softer foam contained into a harder shell. In addition, there is a TPU (plastic) reinforcement on the medial side of the midsole, to give even extra support. The use of FlyWire on the upper ensures a tight wrap of the foot.

Best for:
Neutral to mild over-pronating runners in search of a very lightweight run. At 10.7 oz, the Lunarglide is lighter than most light support shoes.

Nike LunarGlide+ 3 Review

LunarElite+
The LunarElite replaces the Air Zoom Elite. Thought as a lightweight racer/tempo trainer, it offers less support than the LunarGlide: the Elite still uses the Dynamic Support system but eliminates the TPU insert. Its midsole is also lower than the Glide. FlyWire on the upper and seamless construction complete the features of this very light shoe, sitting at only 9.7 oz.

Best for:
Runners in search of a lightweight shoe with a very comfortable upper, a springy heel cushioning and some mild support for over-pronation.

Compare prices on the Nike LunarElite+

LunarSwift+
The LunarSwift is a takedown of the LunarElite. This means that it has the same design/engineering DNA but at a more affordable pricepoint. There is no FlyWire and the shoe weights slightly more at 10.2 oz.

Best for:
Runners looking for a moderate supportive lightweight tempo/racer shoe at an affordable price point.

Compare prices on the Nike LunarSwift+

Lunar Racer+ 2
At only 6.7 oz. the Lunar Racer 2 is the evolution of the Lunarlite Racer, the best selling marathon racing shoe for 2009. In the last months an increasing number of articles has appeared on newspapers, blogs, forums with a common central theme: traditional running shoes promote a non-ideal running form and running barefoot is what we were created for. At the same time we are seeing more and more Brands launching and promoting shoes that promise to improve your running style, either by creating a barefoot feeling or by promoting midfoot and forefoot strike.

The logic behind it

We know how shock absorption during the walking and running gait works: you land on your heel and roll your foot on the ground up to the forefoot, where your foot lifts off. During this motion your arch collapses (pronates), absorbing the shock caused by your bodyweight.
The objection that has been raised is that since men run on Earth in prehistory, they have been doing so barefoot – with a body engineered just to do that. Barefoot running supporters claim that modern running shoes – being overly cushioned – promote an excessive heel strike, leading to poor running form and even more injuries in the long run (no pun intended).
Even accepting the premise, unfortunately our running landscape has dramatically changed since prehistory – and we run on concrete and gravel much more than we do on grass or ground. Therefore we still need shoes to run safe and comfortable. A few sports company are coming up with shoes that promise to improve our running form and free us from the heel strike slavery.
We have a look today at three: the Newton Running, the Nike Free and the New Balance 800.

Newton Running Shoes

Newton is a relatively new running shoe company founded by a team of runners in Boulder, Colorado. The name comes from the english father of motion laws. The principle they based their shoes upon is simple: for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, and it applies to the principle of running – by applying a force to the ground, the ground applies an equal and opposite force on your foot, propelling you up and forward. (You can read more about it in our article Run Fast: How to Increase Your Running Efficiency).
Newton Running developed a whole range of shoes that encourages running on your midfoot/forefoot, a technique and position that helps keep you running more efficiently, injury-free and faster. They refer to this style of running as a Land Lever Lift scenario.

Actuator Lugs

What this translates into the engineering of the shoe is a unconventional design of the midsole and outsole. As opposed to cushioning the heel (and thus favouring heel landing – or heel-strike), Newton Running places actuator lugs (see picture) directly under the forefoot. On the contact with the ground these lugs are driven into their chambers (action) and, when you apply force on the ground, they are released (reaction), providing extra propulsion.
You can read more about Newton Running Shoes on their website. Go to Newton Running Shoes.

Nike Free

Nike started talking about the advantages of Barefoot Running back in 2005, when they first released the Nike Free running shoe. According to Nike, cushioning and support are needed in order to avoid injuries but, at the same time, all the cushioning and support that modern running shoes provide are making our foot’s muscles lazy. Therefore the Free is created as a training shoe, with which to run a limited number of miles amid your normal running schedule in order to specially train the muscles that are not activated while running with normal running shoes.

Nike Free

The way Nike Free works is by delivering a completely deconstructed sole unit, made of a lightweight foam material which is deeply carved both horizontally and vertically in order to allow the plant of the foot a higher degree of freedom of motion.

We discussed and reviewed the Nike Free 5.0 previously, please read the Nike Free Review where you will also find a video explaining how the shoe was thought and engineered.

New Balance 800

New Balance developed its 800 model with the principles of ChiRunning in mind. ChiRunning is a method of running instruction developed by Danny Dreyer, an American Ultramarathon runner and Tai Chi practitioner. Its primary focus is to teach runners to move in a more efficient, natural way (sounds familiar?).

Without entering too much into detail, one of the principles of ChiRunning is midfoot strike as opposed to heel strike. The NB MR800 was designed in order to provide the maximum benefit for runners who strike with their midfoot.

What you can notice by looking at its sole unit, is the podular construction. The shoe provides the usual cushioning through foam. Since midfoot strikers apply most of their force on the lateral (external) side, there is where NB concentrated their cushioning efforts. Further, the height of the heel is lower than traditional running shoes in order to make it easier for a runner to land on the midfoot.

Do they work?

Both these shoes divide runners into two groups: the ones who use them and swear by the improvements they achieved, and the skeptical ones. We tend to agree that running is not only about pounding mile after mile week after week (even though this is the essence of running training). Running form is extremely important both in preventing injuries and help us run longer, or faster.
While Nike pushes the Free as a training shoe, and New Balance partnered with the ChiRunning organization, who believes that running performance comes after running enjoyability, Newton Running is seriously pushing its shoes as a mean to achieve greater results and it is actively sponsoring athletes who compete in marathons, triathlons…
So far it is too early to say if the barefoot running movement will prevail over the current “heel cushioned” market. We believe time, and miles, will tell.

Brooks Sports Debuts Green Silence Performance Running Shoe

News

Previews

Brooks

running shoes

sustainability

Brooks announced the upcoming launch of the Green Silence racing flat shoe, constructed with less than half (48 percent) as many parts as comparable shoes. (www.brooksrunning.com) recently announced the upcoming launch of the Green Silence, a groundbreaking competition racing flat that boasts a sustainable element in each part of the shoe. Using soy-based inks, water-based adhesives, and recycled materials, Green Silence incorporates sustainability—without sacrificing performance—into every stitch of the shoe, which hits retail February 1, 2010.

In recent years, Brooks has declared its dedication to introducing more eco-friendly design and manufacturing practices as well as more sustainable materials. In 2008, Brooks launched its proprietary BioMoGo midsole, the world’s first biodegradable running shoe midsole that breaks down 50 times faster than traditional midsoles in an enclosed, active landfill. That same year, the company debuted a new shoe box, made of fully biodegradable, 100-percent recycled paperboard. The Green Silence, which will retail for $100, represents another chapter in Brooks’ commitment to environmental responsibility.

“Brooks believes it can continue to lead the running industry when it comes to sustainability,” said Jim Weber, president and CEO of Brooks. “Our latest attempt was to create the most sustainable competition racing flat as technologically possible, without compromising the performance, durability, or aesthetic appeal of the shoe. The result is the Green Silence, which lights the path to bringing more eco-friendlier elements into our future core performance training shoes.”

With direction from Future Concepts Manager Derek Campbell, Brooks spent three years researching sustainable materials and practices to build a shoe that would not only make an eco-statement, but would also successfully deliver the premium performance and durability expected from Brooks.

Green Silence was constructed with less than half (48 percent) as many parts as comparable shoes. Only 26 parts comprise each Green Silence shoe compared to approximately 54 parts in similar styles. And, more than 75 percent of the 26 components have been recycled by consumers. For example, heel counters are made of recycled compact discs; shoe laces, meshes, linings, gillies, and tongue webbings are made from recycled water bottles; and outsoles are made of recycled rubber. These substitutions reduce the energy (41 percent less) and oil (.5 liter less) needed to manufacture each pair of Green Silence shoes.

The dyes, colorants, and adhesives used in production are non-toxic and not harmful to those working in the factory. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were lowered by 65 percent. The midsoles, collar foams, and sock liners are completely biodegradable, which reduces waste when the shoes are eventually retired to an active, enclosed landfill.

What’s in a name? Brooks’ Injo Gunasekara, senior industrial designer of footwear and the creative mind behind the Green Silence design, selected the shoe’s name as a nod to its eco-friendlier character (Green) and the belief that sustainability will soon become a consumer expectation rather than a marketable product differentiator (Silence).

“We were told Brooks couldn’t build running shoes that feel great, perform great, look great, and support a healthier environment for years ahead,” said Campbell. “With Green Silence, we shattered that belief. We hope this shoe will serve as an inspiration to others in our industry and beyond.”

By employing its Design for Environment (DfE) approach to the development of Green Silence, Brooks learned key sustainable practices that will flow into the design and production of future footwear offerings.

The running and broader footwear industries recently honored Brooks with public high-fives for the brand‘s sustainability focus. In 2008, Brooks was awarded the 2008 International Green Award from Runner’s World, the 2008 Green Award from Footwear News, and the 2008 Sprout Award from Trail Runner.

For more information about Brooks’ Green Silence and other sustainability initiatives, please visit the company’s Green Room at www.brooksrunning.com/Green+Room/.

About Brooks
Brooks Sports, Inc. is a leading running company that designs and markets a line of performance footwear, apparel, and accessories in more than 40 countries worldwide. (April 19, 2009) – Nike today introduced the Nike LunarGlide+, a new lightweight running shoe with an innovative mid-sole design architecture called Dynamic Support, a patent-pending system which adapts to a runner’s gait with each step, providing superior cushioning and as-needed stability.

“Runners traditionally had to choose between stability or cushioning shoes based on their running style,” said Leslie Lane, Global Vice President and General Manager for Nike Running. “For the first time a running shoe will respond to the runner’s gait throughout a run as it varies between neutral and over-pronation.”

Dynamic Support
The Dynamic Support system breaks the myth that runners must compromise their needs by selecting between two industry-standard categories of Stability or Cushioning. In fact, most runners’ foot strikes will vary between neutral and over-pronation throughout the course of a run, impacted by fatigue and the running surface.

The Nike LunarGlide+ is the first shoe to deliver lightweight, custom performance with both top-tier cushioning and stability.

The Dynamic Support system in the Nike LunarGlide+ mid-sole is comprised of a lightweight LunarLite foam core that sits within a firmer foam carriage. The LunarLite foam core is cut to fit into the carriage at an angle creating a deeper cushioned lateral side. The medial side of the Nike LunarGlide+ mid-sole features a rear-foot wedge that has been contoured into the firmer foam carriage which provides stability on an as-needed basis.

A neutral runner will not engage the wedge upon foot strike, but a runner who pronates, no matter to what degree, will engage the rear-foot wedge, receiving the stable platform they need upon foot strike. All runners will feel the deep, responsive cushioning of the LunarLite foam core.

“All runners are different and therefore need specific solutions,” said Phil McCartney, Global Footwear Category Director. ”The new Nike LunarGlide+ featuring the Dynamic Support system responds with cushioning and stability so runners will no longer have to compromise. Runners will experience a ride which is specific to them and how they run, even as their gait changes throughout a run.”

LunarLite Foam
Nike first introduced LunarLite foam in the summer of 2008 in Beijing as the mid-sole cushioning system of the Nike LunaRacer and Nike Lunar Trainer running shoes and in the Nike Hyperdunk basketball shoe. Traditional cushioning systems only absorb energy upon impact while LunarLite foam has proven to provide superior cushioning and significant energy return.

Flywire Technology
The Nike LunarGlide+ incorporates another Beijing innovation – Flywire technology. The integration of Flywire threads into the upper design of shoes from a variety of sports including running, basketball and tennis, has allowed designers to shed unprecedented amounts of weight without losing the necessary support and stability.

The use of LunarLite foam in the mid-sole and Flywire threads in the upper allowed designers to create the men’s Nike LunarGlide+ at a mere 10.6 oz., while the women’s weighs just 8.6 oz.

Women’s Specific Design
All runners are not created equal, particularly when looking at the differences between men and women. In addition to being built on a women’s last, the women’s Nike LunarGlide+ addresses the key physical differences, creating a truly women’s specific design.

•Women, on average, weigh 10 to 15 percent less than men, and therefore will have less mass compressing a shoe’s midsole. To account for this, the women’s Nike LunarGlide+ includes more soft foam under the heel than the men’s model, providing the softer cushioning women need.

•Women on average pronate more than men but the intuitive response of the Nike LunarGlide+ addresses varying stability needs for both genders.

•Women’s heels tend to vary in width more than men’s. The women’s Nike LunarGlide+ has a two-part, gender-specific external heel counter engineered to accommodate the higher variability in heel volume. By framing the heel instead of fully encompassing it, this unique heel counter balances a woman’s distinct needs for comfort, fit and support.

•Women tend to prefer a more supportive fit than men. The women’s Nike LunarGlide+ upper incorporates a medial-side Arch Strap teamed with Flywire technology to provide better lock-down in the mid-sole.

•Women tend to have broader forefeet which can lead to fit issues, abrasions to the skin, even bunions. Nike has applied its Dynamic Fit Technology, a stretchy material on the medial side of the women’s Nike LunarGlide+ adjacent to the big toe, which expands and telescopes out to accommodate the varying width of the female forefoot.

Natural Motion Engineering
The entire outsole features next generation Nike Natural Motion engineering– informed by the Nike Free line of shoes – to encourage a smooth, efficient stride.

Long Distance Comfort
Soft yet strong microfiber synthetic overlays are ultrasonically welded in place for targeted support with seam-free comfort. A high-resilience foam sockliner with men’s and women’s-specific geometry creates a foot-bed with exceptional step-in feel and added support.

The Nike LunarGlide+ will be available globally beginning July 1, 2009.

About Nike
NIKE, Inc. based near Beaverton, Oregon, is the world’s leading designer, marketer and distributor of authentic athletic footwear, apparel, equipment and accessories for a wide variety of sports and fitness activities.
