When I first opened the Brooks box, I noticed the striking design. I tested the yellow and grey color way. The color combination was eye catching, and the overlay mesh had an interesting decorative pattern. I liked the branding design, which has the shoe name located along the lacing system and the Brooks name down its heel.

Brooks Trance 11 Upper:

Brooks Tongue Tied lacing system reduces the sliding of the Trance’s tongue. The upper materials are extremely comfortable. Its open mesh overlay provides breathability and maximum moisture management. The microfiber construction offers durability and comfort in a light fabric. The toe box is wide and gives a generous fit. Its Blown Rubber Forefoot is soft and durable for all weather climates. The environmentally friendly BioMogo sock liner offers additional comfort.

Brooks Trance 11 Sole Unit:

Overpronation occurs when a runner’s stride hits the ground on the lateral side of the heel. The foot strike does not absorb shock efficiently, which results in uneven distribution of weight. This causes the individual’s arches to collapse, or a weakening of the ankles.

The Trance 11 is a luxurious ride and offers top of the line technology to correct overpronation.

Brooks’ patented Caterpillar Crash Pad is one of the featured technologies. The perimeter of the sole is lined with the Crash Pad to provide a smooth ride and maximum flexibility. This allows an efficient stride, and a smooth heel lay down. In other words, it shifts energy from heel to toe and guides the foot towards a more normal and fluid stride.

Brooks patented DNA Technology is full length to offer a more customized ride. Its gel cushioning is made up of non-Newtonian liquid, and responds to the amount of force placed on the foot by providing custom support. Brooks’ DNA also offers twice the normal energy return. The faster you run, the harder the liquid becomes. The tuned density midsole technology adapts to the runner’s weight; providing additional custom cushioning. Additionally, the midsoles are engineered to allow pronation control and stability through its Progressive Diagonal Rollbar.

Brooks Trance 11 Opinion:

Two of Brooks’ bestselling stability shoes are the Adrenaline GTS 12 and the Trance 11. While both are great stability options, what are the main differences between the two?

The materials in the upper of the Trance offer maximum cushion and are softer, which adds to the higher cost. The Adrenaline GTS 12 provided a snugger, more conforming fit. The Trances were plusher and offered maximum comfort. Unlike the Adrenaline GTS 12 model which offers DNA filled pods, the Trance 11 model offers full length DNA cushioning.

The Adrenaline GTS 12 offers adjustable elastic lacing that provides a secure and its signature “midfoot wrap” fit while the Trance 11 Toe Box is wider and offers a roomier fit. In addition, the arch support in the Trance 11 model is lower. Both offer great support, but I preferred the custom fit of the Adrenalines. Coming from someone with flat fleet, the arch support in the Trance 11 was lower than my personal preference .

The Brooks Pure Project line, which hit stores this fall, was Brooks’ response to runners’ requests for more minimal shoes. The Pure Project line consists of four minimal shoes—the Pure Cadence, the Pure Connect, Pure Flow, and Pure Grit—each aimed at a different type of runner. The Pure Cadence is the stability shoe of the group, designed to allow overpronators to experience a minimal shoe. Key features include a supportive upper, a thick pod on the outer edge of the sole unit, as well as internal support in the sole unit to add additional stability.

Brooks Pure Cadence Impressions

Having heard quite a bit about the Pure Project line in the weeks leading up to their release, I was excited to try the Pure Cadence. From the first run, a short three-mile tempo through my neighborhood, I loved their snug fit and the smooth ride. Between the flexible sole and the lighter weight, they made for a great option for speed or track days, though I wouldn’t recommend them for trails. Having tried other minimal shoes, I was expecting a bit of soreness in my legs the next day, but didn’t have any issues the next day. Despite a lack of soreness, I would recommend easing into these shoes, as the overall experience is different from most other running shoes.

One of the advantages of minimal shoes that many runners focus on is the encouragement of a midfoot strike. As an injury-prone runner, I’ve been working toward improving my gait and footstrike, and I did feel a difference when running in the Pure Cadence. Post-marathon, I had noticed that my gait had slipped a bit, and I was going back to my old heel-striking ways. With regular runs in the Pure Cadence, I have found that even in my everyday trainers, my gait has improved considerably. Overall, I’ve enjoyed running in the Pure Cadence, and they’ll stay in my rotation for speed work and the occasional race.

Brooks Pure Cadence Sole Unit

The sole unit features two special elements to provide adequate stability for overpronators. The first and most immediately noticeable element is a small pod, located on the outside of the middle part of the sole, and is meant to prevent the foot from rolling inward and stressing the ankle. While I was concerned that it would feel awkward when I first looked at the shoes, I didn’t feel it on the run. The other main support feature in the sole unit is an internal bar running through the shoe diagonally. Like the pod, I didn’t find this element to be obtrusive while running.

All Pure Project shoes have two other distinctive features: a split in the toe box, called the Toe Flex, and a smooth inverted heel, which Brooks has named the Ideal Heel. The Toe Flex, located near the big toe, is meant to allow the big toe to work independently to encourage runners to use their own balance, rather than letting the shoe do the work for them. The second feature, which is one of my favorite parts about the Pure Cadence, is the Ideal Heel. The Ideal Heel is a smooth inverted heel, which is meant to encourage a midfoot strike.

Brooks Pure Cadence Upper Unit

The main feature of the upper unit on the Pure Cadence is the NavBand, a thick elastic band running across the midfoot. Meant to secure the foot in place and help the shoe conform to the runner’s foot, the NavBand is a nice addition, and adds to the overall snug and secure fit of the shoe. Overall, the upper’s construction is relatively simple and smooth, constructed mostly of lightweight mesh and nylon. One final touch to the shoe was the bubbled laces, which helps keep laces tied. While the upper doesn’t hold up well in rainy conditions—my feet were wet pretty quickly—it would be great for running in the heat. Another advantage to the upper is the smooth interior, great for blister-prone runners.

Brooks Pure Cadence Opinion

The Pure Cadence would be a great option for light overpronating runners looking to try more minimal shoes, though they probably wouldn’t be a great for serious overpronators that normally require heavy support. The with a light, fast, and smooth feel, the Pure Cadence makes for a great experience, and would be a great option for speed work or race day.

When I first took the Adrenalines out of the box, I immediately noticed the upper design of the new model. The silver mesh overlay with white and colored details were classic to the model, but freshly updated. The synthetic leather overlays are designed with reflective accents that run from the heel to the toe. Brooks’ DNA formula provides adaptive cushioning giving a smooth and even run. Immediately after putting on the shoe I noticed the “wrap around” cushioning. The medial post, colored in grey along the arch area allows maximum stability and gait balance.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 12 Sole Unit

The sole unit of the GTS 12 is very similar to the one in the GTS 11. The stability and cushioning elements remained the same, with the biggest change to be found in the heel pad.

For the stability elements, the sole unit of the GTS 12 relies on two main components. The big, grey coloured insert of a harder foam compound on the medial (internal) side of the shoe is called Progressive Diagonal Roll Bar (PDRB) and it’s a traditional medial post, but with varying in hardness from soft to hard going from the heel towards the arch. The result? Different stability for different runners. Brooks calls this “pivot posting”.

Second element of stability is the plastic shank right below the arch (DRB Accel in Brooks’ terms).

Cushioning is provided by two units (one in the heel and one in the forefoot) of DNA. DNA is high-viscosity, non-newtonian fluid that is soft when the speed is low, but gets firmer when the pace gets faster. When you go slow you are longer in contact with the ground and want/need a softer landing, but when you go fast you want the sole to be harder in order to propel you forward. When walking or running at a slow speed, I noticed the DNA pods conform to the ground and remain soft. As my pace quickened, the DNA became firm, as intended, to guarantee faster energy return and providing a smooth run.

The main change versus the previous model is a better “landing crash pad”: the heel area is split in many different pods that compress differently according to the runner’s individual gait.

Although the sole unit is cushioned, it is very supportive. After running a few miles to break in the shoe, I was surprised to feel that lack of needing to “break in” the shoe.

The additional heel cushioning added maximum comfort and a firm back. It’s easily detectable as it matches the Brooks side logo on each shoe.

Its stacked foam Bio MoGo provides additional stability and reduces foot fatigue; perfect for low to mid arch runners and added custom fit. Additionally, Brooks boasts the foam core is biodegradable; an additional bonus to help Mother Nature.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 12 Upper

The upper unit is very flexible and breathable due to the top mesh overlay. The mesh and interior polyester and nylon lining provide strong moisture management. With four newly added adjustable straps, the elasticity ensures a snug and secure fit.

The synthetic leather overlay adds additional structure along the top and sides of the shoe. Additionally, Brooks has designed a new lace tab, Tongue Tied, which keeps the tongue up while running. Although initially weary of the new Tongue Tied technology, I was surprised that the tongue not only stayed up during my run, but provided a more snug fit.

Overall the upper keeps the traditional look and feel of the Adrenaline, but improves in the sense that is lighter and more comfortable: the lacing system is more adaptive of the shape of the foot and locks the foot closer to the midsole, adding stability. The shoe fit is very similar to the Adrenaline 10 and 11.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 12 Opinion

I have been running in the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 10 model for the past year. I expected the shoe to be comfortable and durable, but to feel very similar to the GTS 10. It was surprising to immediately feel the differences between the two models. Not being the lightest of the shoes, the weight reduction comes as a very welcome news.

The added heel cradle gives extra cushion in the back, which keeps the shoe firm but at maximum comfort. There is a reason I am loyal to this model, and Brooks keeps showing me why through its continued ensured quality.

After running a half marathon in the shoes, as well as having logged over 60 miles in training, my feet still had breathability and were comfortable.

We thank the nice people at Brooks for sending us a pair of Adrenaline GTS 12 to test. This did not influence our review of the shoes, written after running more than 60 miles (and a half marathon) in them.

New from Brooks is the PureProject collection, and Brooks’ advertising campaign for the Pure Connect describe the experience of running in the Pure Connect as “Pure Joy”.  

After logging some training miles (100 miles for Jim, 48 miles of Tom) in the Pure Connect we have to say that this statement isn’t far off.  Brooks completely broke the mold of what was considered a successful running shoe in their line to make the Pure series, the closest relative of which is the Brooks Green Silence.  

This Radically new and impressive line of minimalist shoes has began to create a lot of buzz within the running community.  With its anatomical fit and use of lightweight flexible materials the collection has definitely impressed us along with many other runners, and raised the bar for what a minimalist shoe should be. The PureConnect is the lightest and most flexible shoe in the line, and at its core is designed to put as little as possible between you and the surface you’re running on.

Brooks Pure Connect First Impressions

Tom:  When I first took the Pure Connect out of the box it reminded me of old Nike Waffle racers or even a cross country racing flat. There isn’t a sharp edge on the sole;  all rounded corners that you would typically see on a cross country or trail shoe than one engineered for the road.  The shoe is featherweight at 7.2 ounces and when I slipped them on I noticed several things.  First, the Pure Connect is fairly narrow, especially in the mid foot, which may make it a problem for runners with wide feet.  Second, there is a noticeable arch cushioning feature which really hugs the arch.  This may upset some pure minimalist runners who prefer absolutely flat shoes.  Third, the Pure Connect runs 1/2 size small and I was lucky enough to have both my usual size 9.5 US and access to a size 10.  The 9.5 gave me blisters on both heels and felt constricting.  After sizing up to the 10 my feet felt like they had ample room and any friction issues disappeared.

Jim:The PureConnect uses very minimal Overlays, and is primarily composed of open mesh.  It was refreshing to see that the use of plastic on the upper was almost non-existent.  Slipping on the shoe for the first time was amazingly different than anything that I have worn up to this point.  The Shoe was glove like and hugged every contour of my foot almost as if it had been tailored just for me.  The sole was also much of the same lying firmly against my foot and traveling its contours nicely.  By this point I am guessing that many of you can tell that the shoe locks your foot down well, and for myself ran true to size.  However, many runners have complained that the shoe has run too small and did have to order a ½ size up.  Right away I could notice the midfoot support that was created by a large support pod placed midfoot on the sole.  The toe box was snug but very flexible giving it a roomy feel.

Brooks PureConnect Upper

The upper of the Pure Connect is very simple, breathable, and functional.  It is comprised of an open sandwich mesh on the inside, and then covered by a thin tight mono-mesh.  At first glance the shoe appears thin and weak, but surprisingly it has been able to take some abuse.  A micro suede underlay sandwiched between the two layers reinforces most of the open mesh.  This undlayment rays or fingers out from the laces and splays out into the midsole.  

Simple overlays with reflective accents band the heel and toe with the Brooks logo incorporating itself into the lacing system all providing additional strength and support.   Running bilaterally up the sides of the shoe and across the top of the tongue, and unique to the PureProject line, is the Nav Band.  This elastic band that wraps the instep is intended to provide a more glove like fit.  Runners complained of this feature being useless on the Brooks Pure Grit, the Pure Connect’s trail cousin, but the Nav band on the Pure Connect is taut and does hug the mid foot a bit better. After wearing the shoe on a couple of runs I really didn’t seem to notice that band made that much of a difference.  Don’t get me wrong there was definitely not a lack of support or a sloppy feeling.  I was just expecting to feel something a little more additional above what the rest of the shoe already provided.

The heel collar is comprised of a thin well-placed layer of foam that provided the right amount of protection and support without being overly bulky.  The actual heel of the shoe is also a new design unique to the PureProject collection that they have deemed the Ideal Heel.  The idea of the this new design is to shift contact points forward aligning your center of gravity, and encouraging a more natural midfoot to forefoot foot strike. The heel was very form fitting and did align my foot perfectly causing no discomfort or slip.

The toebox of the shoe fits well and as we mentioned earlier is snug.  However, with the uniqueness of its materials and flexibility the toebox is nice and airy and allows for ample movement.  A thin microsuede tongue fit and protected my foot without rolling off center and bunching up which I appreciated.  Tubular oval laces with a beaded pattern starting at the aglet, helping avoid lace slippage, secured the shoe and remained tied causing us no discomfort.

Brooks PureConnect Midsole

The first thing we noticed about the full length Bio MoGo midsole is that there isn’t a hard edge or corner on the shoe.  Every aspect of the midsole is rounded which seems to promote a more natural footfall and transition through the gait cycle.  The Bio MoGo midsole also contains Brooks DNA gel like cushioning material  and it is a soft, responsive cushioning which seems very resilient.  Despite continued pounding on the roads and trails the cushioning seems to stay fresh and not compacted.

Being that the Pure Connect is a neutral running shoe with minimalist features there are not any stability features or interruptions to the natural stride.  The 4mm heel to toe drop (the industry standard is 12mm for road shoes) helped keep us running on our mid feet with a high running cadence.  This felt to us like the right amount of cushioning which didn’t leave us feeling beat up after long runs.

As with all of Brooks shoes the PureConnect uses Brooks unique Bio MoGo midsole.  This for those of you new to the technology it encourages anaerobic microbes to eat away at the sole once it hits an active landfill.  This makes it the most biodegradable midsole on the market.  Along with the Bio MoGo midsole Brooks DNA, a non-Newtonian cushioning gel, has been blended in eliminating the use of drop-ins.

Brooks PureConnect Outsole

The Outsole of the Pure Connect is fairly simple.  Brooks placed durable carbon rubbers over the cushioning “pods” in high wear areas of the shoe.  Our favorite feature is the “Ideal Heel” which apply describes how Brooks created a rounded heel to aid in natural foot strike.  Having taken these shoes on trails which are cambered and uneven the PureConnect really adapts due the the rounded nature of the midsole and outsole.

We can tell by looking at the outsole that the (medial) inside of the heel is slightly higher than the outside (lateral).  This is common for many road shoes and it does offer some medial support for slight overpronators.

What we both really enjoyed about this sole what its Anatomical Last construction. The detailed anatomical form really seemed to fit the shape of our feet well, and moved and flexed throughout the run unlike anything we have ever experienced.  Brooks also uses an individualized sole pod design versus a traditional one piece sole.  This sole pod design really helps adjust to your individual impact points and really gives you that barefoot feel.

Toe Flex technology helps to finish off the rest of the sole.  A split placed in the front of the sole lateral of the big toe is designed to encourage your natural balance.  The thought is that by freeing the big toe and allowing it to splay and move independently the foot will allow the foot to move, as it should naturally as if barefoot.  We were initially skeptical during but found that the split allows the big toe to splay during toe-off.  We really noticed this during tempo runs and intervals, as it really seemed to give me a more powerful push-off.

Brooks PureConnect Opinion

Jim:  Brooks have definitely taken the minimalist shoe one step further with the PureConnect.  The simple, flexible, lightweight, and airy design really give this shoe a good balance between barefoot minimalism and the cushioning required for daily training.  I found the shoe to be super responsive and fun to run in.  I have put approximately 100 miles on the shoe over varying terrain and have not have had any durability issues or discomfort whatsoever.  The PureConnet has been a pleasure to wear and run in, and I would encourage those looking for a solid minimalist shoe to look no further that these.

Tom:  The PureConnect fills a gap in the current shoe market between what is truly minimalist and what can be utilized as a performance training shoe.  The PureConnect feels like a racing flat/ cross country flat with better cushioning and durability.  They are simply a joy to run in and I find myself neglecting other shoes for the feeling of freedom inspired by the PureConnect.  Speed work, tempo runs, long runs…whatever.  The PureConnect can do it all.

On a safety note, be careful when transitioning to a shoe with a 4mm drop.  If you have been running in a bulkier, traditional trainer with stability or motion control, this transition should be very gradual.

The Brooks Trance 10 certainly lives up to its name as soon as you open the box! It’s a visually striking shoe with a lot of design elements happening at once. The Trance 10 is criss-crossed with decorative overlays across the entire shoe. My test pair arrived in a vivid orange and aggressive silver and black colorway. Sporting a rather large medial post and a segmented lateral midsole, the Trance 10 also looks like a lot of shoe. Did it succeed in mesmerizing me on the road? Read on and we shall see…

Brooks Trance 10 Upper

The Trance definitely has the busiest upper I’ve ever seen in a shoe. Many of the overlays span the entire length of the shoe in effort to better center the foot over the midsole. The lower toebox overlay even circles the entire shoe where the upper meets the midsole.

As in the Adrenaline 11, Brooks has included three new technologies to improve the fit and function of the Trance 10.

Four flexible lacing tabs are now included along the eyelet row to help provide a more customized fit around the arch. A new external supplement to the heel counter, called a Heel Cradle, is in place on both medial and lateral portions of the heel. Its job is to provide better centering for an improved heel fit and stability. Brooks also employs a lacing anchor called Tongue Tied on the tongue to halt any sliding of the Trance’s tongue. A cushy BioMogo sock liner finishes out the upper.

Brooks Trance 10 Sole Unit

Being a flagship shoe, The Trance 10 gets all the trimmings Brooks has to offer. The midsole of the Trance 10 is still built around the Brooks Progressive Diagonal Rollbar (PDRB) and its accompanying Diagonal Roll Bar Accel (DRB-Accel) shank. These are easily identified by a quick glance at the medial, or inside, portion of the shoe. The PDRB is the large section of gray foam and the DRB-Accel is the clear plastic bridge under the arch. These are placed in the Trance 10 to help correct an over pronating foot strike.

Over pronation is when a runner’s foot rolls too far inside during the gait cycle and often can be seen by watching how much a runner’s arch collapses when he or she is bearing weight on the foot. These two technologies work together with the “caterpillar” lateral midsole to reduce the amount of pronation a runner experiences. This “caterpillar” design forms the entire lateral midsole into smaller sections which lay down one at a time during running resulting in a smooth transition and greater lateral release.

The Trance 10 midsole is rendered in BioMogo which is Brooks’ environmentally friendly premium midsole foam. According to Brooks, BioMogo decomposes 50 times faster than convention shoe foams when it is placed in a landfill environment.

Providing the cush in the Trance 10 is Brooks brand new full length DNA cushioning system. DNA has now replaced Hydroflow and is a variable density material that responds according to the amount of force placed upon it. At slower paces, DNA is soft and becomes firmer as the runner accelerates.

Brooks Trance 10 Opinion

The Trance 10 is in my favorite category: premium stability. I like a shoe that has all the technological bells and whistles with looks to match. Unfortunately, I wasn’t quite charmed by the Trance 10. The upper of the Trance has more room than its sister shoe, the Adrenaline, which is fine with me. I had no heel fit issues in the Trance as I did in the Adrenaline 11.

However, the Trance magic fizzled a bit in my number one category: arch support. As was the case in the Adrenaline 11, Brooks places the arch too low and too far forward in the Trance for my liking. I have very flexible arches and I demand a shoe to have adequate arch support placed close to my heel. The Trance simply isn’t built this way. In fact, my wife was running behind me and noted that my feet rolled inwards more in the Trance 10 than in my other shoes.

Having said that, the Trance 10 goes into cushioning overdrive and the DNA technology delivers the goods as advertised. The transition in the Trance 10 felt slower than other comparable shoes I’ve run in. I’ve never been a big believer that weight is a determining factor in shoe selection but I couldn’t help but get the feeling that the Trance 10 is best suited for someone with a larger frame. Bigger runners who like a low arched shoe could easily fall under the spell of the Brooks Trance 10.

Brooks’ best-selling Adrenaline series enters into its second decade of production with a few upper tweaks and a new cushioning system while still aiming to satisfy the many runners who have come to rely on the aptly named Go To Series (GTS). Brooks builds the shoe specifically for the runner who needs extra stability in their footwear.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 11 Sole Unit

The Adrenaline 11 GTS, like its predecessors, is built around the Brooks Progressive Diagonal Roll Bar (PDRB) medial posting and Diagonal Roll Bar Accel (DRB-Accel) mid foot shank. Medial posting is a section of firm foam found on the medial (arch) aspect of many stability class shoes. This construction technique is used to help control over pronation. Over pronation occurs when a runner’s foot lands and moves too far inward, often a cause of running injuries such as plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis and medial shin splints.

Brooks actually employs three different densities of foam in the Adrenaline GTS 11 to help slow down the inward movement of an over pronator’s foot. The softest foam is found on the outside of the heel and progresses to the firmest foam under the medial aspect of the foot. The DRB-Accel midfoot shank is a plastic reinforcement for the midfoot area of the shoe and helps neutralize the twisting forces that an over pronating runner places on their footwear.

The entire midsole foam is still comprised of Brooks Bio MoGo, a foam formulation that begins to decompose 50 times faster than traditional foams once it hits a landfill environment. However, the biggest news for the Adrenaline GTS 11 is the replacement of Brooks long-standing Hydroflow cushioning system with a new technology that Brooks calls DNA.

DNA cushioning is geared to respond to the amount of force placed upon it and respond accordingly. During slower running DNA remains soft but when the pace quickens, DNA responds with firmer energy return. In the Adrenaline GTS 11, DNA is placed in the heel and forefoot.

To further aid in cushioning and provide smooth transition through foot strike, Brooks has created a lateral caterpillar heel section for the GTS 11. This helps the shoe lay down one small section at a time, much like how its namesake insect moves. This technology is easily identifiable as Brooks color matches it to the logo on the upper.

Adrenaline GTS 11 Upper

The Adrenaline GTS 11 upper now includes three new technologies designed to improve the fit of the shoe. Brooks has installed a lacing tab, named Tongue Tied, that prevents the tongue from sliding during running. The mid foot arch wrap has also been redesigned and now features four separate lacing tabs that attach to the upper via flexible straps, resulting in a more customizable arch fit.

Also included is Brooks new Heel Cradle design which reinforces the heel counter and helps keep the foot centered on the platform. Reflective details are found on both the heel and forefoot to provide extra visibility during low light conditions. Rounding out the upper is a sockliner constructed from Bio MoGo foam.

Adrenaline GTS 11 Opinion

Without a doubt, the Adrenaline series is loved by many runners. I see them on people’s feet every day. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel the love from the Adrenaline GTS 11. On paper, the shoe looks like it would be ideal for me but when the rubber met the road it was a different story altogether.

A stability shoe lives and dies by two things with me: arch placement and heel fit. On my first run in the GTS 11 I knew that the arch was wrong for my feet. If I wear a shoe with too low of an arch, I get fatigue and then pain in my posterior tibial tendon, especially in my left foot. The posterior tibial tendon runs down the inside of the leg and ends under the navicular bone in the foot. Its primary job is to slow down pronation in the arch of the foot. With the Adrenaline, my foot pronated too far inside the shoe before I engaged the PDRB resulting in early lower leg fatigue. The Adrenaline has an arch, but it’s just too low and too far forward in the shoe. If Brooks were to place the arch closer to the heel it would likely sit nicely under my navicular and take some strain off of it.

Secondly, I couldn’t get a good heel fit in the GTS 11. I have a very average regular width foot and I rarely have issues with the fit of a shoe’s upper. It seemed as though the Adrenaline was bullet shaped; wider in the heel and narrower in the toebox. When I tightened the laces to secure the heel it ended up being too tight on the midfoot aspect of the shoe.

However, I did find the Adrenaline GTS 11 to be a very smooth riding and quiet shoe. The DNA cushioning system felt more than adequate and I was impressed with the caterpillar heel section as it made for an easy transition. I also appreciated the shoes low profile feel, despite my issues with the heel fit. I can definitely understand why so many runners love this shoe but it is simply not the fit for me. Best suited for runners with very low arches and flat feet.

Brooks Glycerin 9 First Impressions

Runners who have enjoyed past editions of the Glycerin will appreciate the plush cushioning and will only notice minor changes between the Glycerine 8 and 9. However, the best surprise about the 9 is that Brooks cut a full ounce off the shoe while retaining the same plush cushioning and I can’t figure out how they did this.

The Glycerin 9 runs true to size and features a plush interior, roomy toebox, and a snug but comfortable fit. Brooks kept the barely there arch of the Glycerin 8 and the well padded heel collar and tongue. Simple oval laces stayed tied and did not cause any discomfort on the top of my foot. The mesh pattern and overlays of the 9 is almost identical to the 8 save for the heel cup which features rigid plastic overlays.

Brooks Glycerin 9 Upper

The upper features a breathable “Element mesh” throughout and the mid foot area has an especially breathable rubber mesh designed to help the foot air out. Overlays are pretty basic and provide a great deal of support throughout the upper. Brooks changed very little about the upper from the 8 to the 9. Reflective highlights are a nice added touch for winter running and they are strategically placed on the toe and heel of the shoe.

The heel of the Glycerin 9 is significantly stiffer and more built up than in past incarnations. This is very noticeable at first, but less so once I had a few runs logged in the shoe. Overall, this is the kind of construction and durability that any Brooks wearer has come to expect over the years.

Brooks Glycerin 9 Midsole

Brooks changed things up a bit by offering full length DNA cushioning gel pods throughout the entire shoe rather than just in the heel and forefoot of the 8th edition. The midsole also contains Bio Mogo, Brooks environmentally friendly EVA foam which is both resilient and highly responsive.

The midsole contains very little arch support which may bother some runners needing some additional support. True neutral runners will likely appreciate that the lack of arch in this shoe improves its flexibility a great deal. The softer Bio Mogo is cradled within the firmer DNA layer which creates a nice energy return on foot strike.

I have been impressed with the DNA cushioning in the past and it does live up to its billing as an adaptable cushioning technology. It is designed to firm up for heavier runners and stay malleable for lightweight runners.

The midsole also features a thermoplastic unit right in the mid foot of the shoe which is aimed at decreasing twisting throughout transition from heel to toe. This is a feature used by many shoe companies on their high end models and unfortunately this “DRB Accel” greatly deceases flexibility in the shoe. The positive aspect of this feature is that a minimal pronator could get by with the Glycerin 9 as it offers a touch of support.

Brooks lowered the overall height of the shoe by 2mm but maintains the same heel drop of 12 mm, which the running shoe industry at large is now seeming to question. A heel striker will appreciate this feature but a mid foot or forefoot striker may feel that the bulkiness of the heel gets in the way.

Brooks Glycerin 9 Outsole

The outsole of the Glycerin 9 is almost identical to that of the 8. The outsole is split into compartments to aid in flexibility which is impeded by the rigidity of the plastic midfoot shank. The carbon outsole is very durable and I did not notice any significant wear on the outsole.

Brooks Glycerin 9 Performance and Overall Impressions

The Glycerin 9 is a maximum feature neutrally cushioned shoe designed to provide the runner with a plush ride and some support for high mileage. Brooks states that this newest version adds more cushioning with improved flexibility over the 8th version.

What Brooks did that is very impressive is that they designed a very plush shoe and cut an entire ounce off the last version. The full length DNA in the midsole does seem to add additional firm but responsive cushioning However, the claims at increased flexibility appear to be just a placebo effect in my opinion. The segmented outsole is completely impeded by the torsion bar placed in the middle of the shoe and flexibility test comparisons to other high end neutral trainers put the Brooks Glycerin 9 a bit on the stiff side. Brooks has always made fairly substantial, and might I say stiff trainers (save for their trail shoes and racing flats), but it would seem that in the current climate of running shoe manufacturing towards allowing for more natural foot movement this torsion bar may be overdoing it.

The Brooks Glycerin 9 may offer more support than other top of the line neutral cushioning shoes which may make it an option for runners needing some structural support.

Brooks continues to be the leader in ecologically designed running shoes as they are the only running shoe manufacturer with biodegradable midsoles in their entire line of running shoes. Their BioMoGo material biodegrades 50 times faster than those of other manufacturers and the knowledge that your worn out trainers aren’t existing in a landfill for the next 20,000 years should make you feel good.

After the highly-successful Ghost 3, Brooks went with a more conservative update for the Ghost 4, only improving on the Ghost 3’s advantages. Leaving the overall fit untouched, Brooks rebuilt the sole unit while trying and leaving the feel unchanged. The most noticeable changes from the Ghost 3 are the heel and forefoot cushioning, and the crash pad in the heel, which is more segmented allowing for additional flexibility. Another key change to the Ghost 4 is Brooks’ DNA system -a patented cushioning system that is designed to adapt to a runner’s foot. Overall, Brooks has created a more balanced and lighter trainer, which allows the foot to move naturally without sacrificing support and cushioning.

Brooks Ghost 4 Impressions

I admit that I was really excited to try the Brooks Ghost 4 from the beginning, and I wasn’t disappointed once I began wearing them. From my very first run in them I was hooked, and found myself reaching for them again and again. The Ghost 4 has a nice blend of support and flexibility, which is evident immediately. The soft, flexible sole and lightweight upper make for a smooth heel-to-toe transition, providing plenty of bounce and a great kick throughout the entire run. After running in them for about a week, I decided that they would be the shoes for my next marathon.

The Ghost 4 held up great throughout my 20-mile training runs, and even better during 26.2 miles through the streets of New York City. Never once feeling heavy -even through the long runs -the Ghost 4 was soft enough to protect my legs from the pounding, yet still allowed me to feel the road beneath me. I put them through quite a bit this summer, running through rain and heat, on pavement and trails, and the Ghost 4 never let me down. Brooks has struck a great balance with the Ghost 4, blending support with a lightweight construction. The end result is a trainer that protects runners from the impact of the road without interfering with the wearer’s gait.

Brooks Ghost 4 Sole Unit

The sole unit of the Ghost 4 has been updated for the new version to create a smoother heel-to-toe transition and a smoother ride. The caterpillar crash pad at the heel is more segmented in this version than in the Ghost 4, with wider “Omega Flex Grooves,” adding more flexibility to the heel section. The flex grooves are narrower at the top and are designed to open out with each step, allowing the shoe to flex with the runner’s foot and provide a more natural feel.

Replacing the HydroFlow system (plastic packets of a viscous fluid) as the primary cushioning in the sole, Brooks DNA cushioning is slightly lighter and is much more responsive. Unlike the older HydroFlow system, DNA actually adapts to each runner, reacting to the impact of an individual’s gait. The midsole also features the DNA system as well as a small plastic shank, meant to provide additional support by keeping the foot stable. When taking my first look at the shoes, I admit that I was concerned that they would make for a clunky ride, but Brooks has made the lateral side less stiff than the medial side, allowing for support without interfering with the ride. Ultimately, the sole unit is flexible and cushioned, allowing wearers to move naturally while remaining supportive enough for long runs.

Brooks Ghost 4 Upper Unit

Brooks has kept the upper unit simple on the Ghost 4. The upper consists of a microfiber layer, topped by an additional mesh layer. Overall, the shoe handles moisture well, and performs well under all conditions. Running through humid summer days -and even sudden October snowstorms in New York City -the upper held strong, and kept my feet dry in all but the soggiest of conditions. Even on a hot day, my feet stayed cool and comfortable. In the middle of the long hours put in while marathon training, this comfort makes a world of difference. The Ghost 4 performed well even on long tempo runs through the rain. Even more importantly, the upper dried quickly, and the shoes were ready for another session the very next morning.

Brooks Ghost 4 Opinion

The Ghost 4 would be a great option for a variety of runners—ranging from beginners and veterans alike. While the upper is without many of the bells and whistles so common in running shoes today, the sole unit has clearly been the focus of the design process, and Brooks has found a great balance between support and flexibility. Perhaps best of all, the Ghost 4 is a versatile shoe that performs well in a variety of conditions. I felt just as comfortable in them on the track as I did on my favorite roads or a light trail.

Brooks Defyance 4

• Brooks Defyance 4 General Info:

The Brooks Defyance 4 was designed for neutral runners looking for a bit more support without added bulk. The midsole, which is based on the wildly popular Adrenaline GTS, features an asymmetrical design that hugs the natural outline of the foot and makes for a smooth ride. The Defyance 4 does not have the firm support post found in the midsole of the Adrenaline GTS, keeping it from providing too much support and allowing for added flexibility.

While runners with wider feet or lower arches may have some issues with the fit of the shoe, Brooks’ slightly narrower toe box and excellent arch support makes for a snug, comfortable fit for high-arched runners, wrapping and supporting the foot. The hallmark of the Defyance 4 is balance. Though the Defyance 4 does not get the same level of attention as some of Brooks’ other offerings, it was named a Runner’s World Editor’s Choice in Spring 2011, and can be an excellent choice for an all-around trainer for neutral runners.

Brooks Defyance 4 Sole Unit:

A key feature of the Defyance 4 sole unit is the caterpillar crash pad at the heel, which helps absorb shock on heavy strides. The Defyance 4 also features Brooks’ Hydroflow at the heel and forefoot, enhancing cushioning and shock absorption, as well as the MoGo midsole, designed to lengthen the life of the cushioning. The forefoot also features a blown-rubber construction, which some runners may find too thin. While running on city streets and dirt trails however, the shoe’s treads provide plenty of traction, even in wet and slippery conditions.

Overall, the sole unit provides a smooth ride, striking a balance between softness that allows runners to feel the terrain, and firmness which provides enough support to run long distances comfortably on both roads and dirt trails. Providing support without overcorrecting form, making the Defyance 4 an option for runners who need support, but still want to avoid heavy interference from their shoes.

• Brooks Defyance 4 Upper:

Most notably, the Defyance 4’s upper features a snug fit, hugging the foot nicely and holding firm, but does not prevent natural movement of the foot, creating a balance of support and freedom of movement. The general construction of the upper consists of Brooks’ profile sockliner, layered with both a mesh and lining for moisture management. Brooks was successful in creating a breathable, comfortable upper unit without sacrificing weather protection. The upper unit keeps feet comfortable, even in hot and humid conditions. Where some trainers may not stay dry even in drizzly conditions, the Defyance 4 will keep feet dry in light rain and through puddles, and dry quickly when they do get wet. While some users have reported durability issues with the sole unit, the upper holds up nicely.

• Brooks Defyance 4 Opinion:

The Brooks Defyance 4 is a great high-mileage trainer for neutral runners looking for a little more support without added bulk. The comfortable, versatile design makes it a great option for runners looking for a workhorse shoe, appropriate for recovery runs, long runs, and tempo runs. Performing well on the long runs and the daily beating of marathon training, the Defyance 4 could also be a solid option for those coming off of an injury. The Defyance 4, while providing stability, are light enough as to not add to fatigue at the end of a long run. One caveat may be that the sole wears slightly more quickly than other trainers, showing visible wear and tear rather early into their life, and is definitely something that runners using the Defyance 4 should be aware of.

A snug fit and low slung profile allows the Defyance 4 to support the foot without too much bulk and weight, hugging the foot. In personal experience, the Defyance 4’s biggest advantage is the fit and support that does not interfere with natural gait. After testing various similar models, the Defyance 4 stood out as a shoe that felt natural and supportive, without the sense that my gait was altered by the construction or a feeling of heaviness that can sometimes come with added support. The Defyance 4 has stood up to the daily grind of marathon training both on city streets and dirt trails. Overall, it is a solid choice for neutral runners looking for a little extra support or for those coming off of an injury

• Brooks Glycerin 8 General Info:

I remember perusing a message board thread several months ago where posters were surprised to learn that Haile Gebrsalassie, the marathon world record holder who weighs in at a slight 123 lbs., was training in his sponsor’s most highly cushioned neutral trainer. The emperor’s response to questions regarding his footwear was that he needs the cushioning to protect his legs from the mega-mileage he runs. The Brooks Glycerin 8 fills this design niche in their running line, and I was keen to discover if this maximum cushioned shoe could protect my legs during my winter base phase.

The eighth edition of this popular high end neutral trainer comes with the new Brooks DNA cushioning technology. This cushioning system is designed to automatically adjust to the size and speed of the runner and offer a customized level of cushioning. While some shoe manufacturers have tried doing this utilizing computer chips and various other gadgetry, Brooks DNA is comprised of a “Newtonian Fluid” which works to distribute the ever changing forces of your foot strike during a run to cater to you. The idea is that the shoe firms up when you need it to during faster running, and softens during those easy recovery runs. Ever the skeptic, I am always eager to try out new shoe technologies and judge for myself whether they work by getting on the road and logging some miles. Throughout the testing of this shoe I logged approximately 82 miles on roads, crushed gravel trails, and through snow and on ice. Here are my findings…

• Brooks Glycerin 8 First Impressions:

The Glycerin 8 runs true to size and features a plush interior, roomy toebox, and just the right amount of room throughout the rest of the shoe to accommodate bulkier winter running socks if needed. The arch of the Glycerin 8 is much less noticeable than on past editions of this shoe, and the DNA cushioning felt softer than what I’ve come to expect from Brooks shoes in the past. This new edition of the shoe added nearly an ounce of weight and the Glycerin 8 weighs in at 12.7 ounces.

• Brooks Glycerin 8 Upper:

The upper of the shoe refers to all of the material that is attached to the foot bed, or midsole, and Brooks brought out all of the design bells and whistles. Fancy graphics overlays aside the upper is breathable, but not too open for cold weather, and reinforces the heel and midfoot section of the shoe. Brooks utilized flattened oval laces over a feature free tongue which offers ample padding to the top of the foot. Brooks did not leave anything in the design department with this shoe as it boldly states that it is a top of the price line, uber cushioned trainer.

Glycerin 8 Upper

• Brooks Glycerin 8 Midsole:

Here is where the DNA technology comes into play. Often times highly cushioned neutral trainers feels squishy, unresponsive, and bulky under our feet. I was pleased during my first few runs in the Glycerin that the midsole feels very well cushioned, but also provided some energy return and bounce in my step. As a skeptic I was ready to debunk this new technology and found that these pods of fluid did seem to offer just the right amount of cushioning for what I want in a high mileage neutral trainer. The midsole is also supportive and a softer layer of EVA foam sits within a firmer layer to offer some pronation support. The midsole also features a piece of plastic on the bottom of the middle of the foot which makes it much more rigid and limits twisting that can occur in the gait cycle. Some runners will appreciate this rigidity while others will hope for a more flexible transition from heel to toe.
The heel to toe drop of the Glycerin 8 is 10mm (24 mm to 14mm) which is less of a drop than past models of this shoe.

• Brooks Glycerin 8 Outsole:

Nothing too groundbreaking here, the Glycerin 8 sticks with what has been tried and true for them. The outsole is split into compartments to aid in flexibility which is hardly noticeable due to the rigidity of the plastic midfoot shank. The carbon outsole is durable and the miles I put on the shoe barely put any wear pattern on this outsole. Different reviews of this shoe complained of the outsole falling apart and wearing down faster than expected. I did not notice any of these issues throughout my test period, and although I only put 80 miles on the shoes, I feel they held up very well.

• Brooks Glycerin 8 Opinion:

The Glycerin 8 is a maximum feature neutrally cushioned shoe designed to provide the runner with a plush ride and some support for high mileage. This is not a shoe for minimalists and the $130 MSRP puts it at the same price point and competition as the Asics Gel Nimbus and the Nike Vomero. I expected to not like this shoe to a certain degree because I have always balked at the higher prices of these shoes. However, I found that I really enjoyed using this shoe on easy recovery runs and long runs on the roads to save my legs from getting beat up. The Brooks DNA cushioning offers a fantastic blend of cushioning, and although I will never know whether those molecules were catering to my every footfall, I did feel like the cushioning was plush, well distributed, and that perfect blend of firm and soft that I like. I would state that the cushioning feels firmer than a Nike Vomero, but a bit softer than the Asics Gel Nimbus. The Glycerin 8 also features excellent forefoot cushioning, something I see missing in a lot of these shoes that focus on heel striking.

Glycerin 8 Stride

The real difference I felt with this shoe is that it does offer a tinge more support than the aforementioned shoes which will be appreciated by larger runners or those logging big miles. The Glycerin 8 feels protective and did offer my legs some relief from the pounding from hard workouts in significantly less substantial shoes. The fit will please a variety of runners and the wide forefoot and lower arch support will accommodate a wider variety of runners. The Glycerin 8 will please bigger runners with forceful footstrikes, high mileage runners, and beginner runners hoping to get some relief from initial road pounding. Runners who are looking for a very flexible neutral trainer may find the Glycerin 8 too stiff as the midfoot shank limits flexibility.

Brooks Trance 10

Brooks highlights three main differences between the two shoes:

• FIT: The Adrenaline GTS 11, thanks to her adjustable stretch lacing, provides a snug wrap of the midfoot while the Trance 10 offers a wider toebox and a looser fit.
• DNA: DNA is Brooks latest and most advanced cushioning technology. The Trance features a full lenght DNA unit, while the Adrenaline GTS only has DNA area in heel and toe
• Materials: The Trance features softer and plushier (thus more expensive) upper materials than the adrenaline.

Individual differences aside, the difference is in the ride: a snugger fit and a more responsive feedback with the road for the Adrenaline GTS 11, and a comfortable and softly cushioned ride on the Trance 10.

Brooks Launch

• Brooks Launch General Info:

The Launch is Brooks’ award-winning lightweight neutral trainer. It is the heir of the deceased Brooks Burn and fills the void in the Brooks marketing lineup for a daily fast shoe. The low 9.1 oz weight (in a size 9) of the shoe gives it more pep than a standard Brooks trainer, such as the Brooks Glycerin or Ghost.

• Brooks Launch Sole Unit:

The sole of the Brooks Launch is where the shoe finds its identity. Its BioMoGo midsole (decomposes relatively quickly in a landfill to reduce environmental waste) provides a somewhat softly cushioned platform for the shoe. The midsole does not have any noteworthy roll bars, wedges, posting, bridges, or any other fancy features to tell the foot what to do. The shoe simply dampens impact, connects well with the ground over a flat rubber outsole, and springs off at the toe. The shoe does not attempt to alter the runner’s gait during transition.

The rearfoot includes abrasion-resistant rubber to increase the shoe’s lifetime on paved or rough surfaces. The forefoot sole includes thick rubber to provide miles worth of wear at fast paces. The heel sole rubber is not as thick as the rubber placed in the forefoot, which means heel strikers are likely to wear the shoe out faster than forefoot strikers. Additionally, the soft midsole might compress faster in general for heavy or high-impact runners, which often correlates with heel striking. The abrasion-resistant rubber in the heel is well-placed for neutral heel strikers and will do its job, but it will start to disappear before even 100 miles. Heel strikers primarily running on pavement may find out that the sole wears significantly by 300 miles. Forefoot/midfoot strikers, on the other hand, will find that the forefoot rubber can last until it wears down to the level of the white rubber flex grooves, which is unlikely to happen until over 300 miles.

• Brooks Launch Upper:

The Launch has an open mesh upper to let the foot breathe. It does so through light mesh layers that hold the foot in the shoe. Synthetic overlays cover important spots where the mesh would otherwise be vulnerable, such as the toe area and sides of the foot. The upper retains its form in the lacing area thanks to a firm rimmed lining that keeps the tongue comfortably in place beneath the laces. This allows the shoe to retain its shape on the foot without pressure on the tongue.

Brooks Launch - Front

The shoe last is built on Brooks’ Universal Platform to accommodate most foot types. The Launch fits true to size compared with most brands. The comfortable upper and absence of built-up medial “support” means it can accommodate a variety of arches.

The Launch has always been a highly visible shoe, as it was originally released in bright red and orange. Its newest colorway includes a black mesh with reflective silver overlays and neon lining.

• Brooks Launch Opinion:

The Brooks Launch is a versatile shoe and unique in a few ways. First, its weight puts it between a trainer and a flat. Second, its midsole lets the foot do its thing. Third, the sprung toe forefoot is loaded with rubber cushion and rubber sole to make the shoe comfortable pushing off quickly at the forefoot. These are qualities that put the shoe somewhat in the middle of a spectrum that has minimalism and maximalism at its respective extremes. It is somewhere between an aerodynamic trainer and a cushioned racer.

Almost any neutral runner can stick a pair of these in the closet confident that it is the appropriate shoe for some types of runs. The Launch’s reduced weight enables a faster turnover and comes with a softer ride. Runners moving towards lighter shoes can use it as a daily trainer. Marathoners are likely to find it provides great cushioning without excessive weight or unnecessary features. Runners unaccustomed to flats can even do a 5k in the Launch and yield some benefit. The shoe is clearly capable of doing a lot. A variety of runners can enjoy putting these features to use in a flashy shoe with a modest price tag.

It’s like the Nike LunarFly, but without added medial stability. It’s a similar cost and competitor to the New Balance 759, but provides a softer ride at a lower weight. It serves a purpose similar to the Mizuno Wave Precision, but without the plastic Wave technology that can sometimes be felt in the midsole. (Non-neutral runners looking for similar performance with added stability should try the Brooks Ravenna.)

• Brooks Ghost 3 General Info:

Brooks running is known for their support/motion control trainers. The Brooks Ghost was born as a go-to, no-nonsense 100$ neutral trainer. Lighter than most neutral trainers, yet comes with a slight weight increase from previous year’s model. The Ghost competes against some of the most successful running shoes: the Nike Pegasus and the Asics Cumulus. Will Brooks be able to go in cushioning where it has gone in stability?

The Ghost 3 comes with a completely new sole unit from the previous model. The most noticeable change is the generously decoupled heel, and the overall flex groove configuration.

As you can see from the picture above, The heel of the Ghost 3 has been split into 5 different cuboid “pods” as opposed to simply the two pods in the previous year’s model. The configuration of the forefoot has been changed, creating three very defined areas.

By decoupling the heel, the shoe absorbs the impact in the exact area where the foot strikes the ground, allowing a more progressive cushioning and accommodating in this way different kind of gaits. By enhancing the flex grooves the forefoot of the Ghost is more flexible and the feeling is of more responsiveness.

The sole is composed by a full-length BioMoGo foam, Brooks trade-mark foam material that guarantees the same cushioning and durability of the usual MoGo foam but in a biodegradable, environment friendly new compound.

Cushioning and shock absorption are ensured by Brooks’ HydroFlow HT units (“bubbles” of a special fluid that compresses with the impact and releases quickly energy back in the opposite direction: up), one in the heel and one in the forefoot.

A good detail that we really appreciate in a cushioning shoe is the presence of a plasic shank (DRB Accel) that provides torsional right rigidity to the midfoot enhancing support while allowing the heel and forefoot to act independently. These shanks are common ground in stability and motion control shoes (Brooks’ bread and butter) but that are very valuable for the neutral or under pronator that performs long runs.

• Brooks Ghost 3 Upper:

The upper of the Ghost 3 is aesthetically very pleasing, but leaves many runners perplex. While the first Ghost was a very minimalistic and lightweight shoe, the Ghost 3 looks more built up and bulky. It feels comfortable and somehow light, with high arches and snug heel/arch feet but with a roomy toebox. The 3 comes in 3 different widths.

• Brooks Ghost 3 Opinion:

We think the Brooks Ghost has found in its third incarnation the shoe that it wants to be: a solid and feature-rich 100$ cushioning trainer that can be the go-to everyday trainer for a large number of neutral or underpronator runners.

It clearly competes at this pricepoint and at this proposition with the Asics Cumulus and the Nike Pegasus. The cushioning in the heel is less bouncy than both the Pegasus and the Cumulus and the forefoot is very responsive. Particular consensus about the runners is that the arch is quite high and the fit is snug. The stability elements are more similar to the Asics rather than the Nike and the weight is slightly lower.

In conclusion, we understand fans of the previous Ghost shoes might be disappointed in the Ghost 3, because the shoe has changed much since the first version. At the same time we think this shoe finds a new market and a new reason to live. We suggest it to under pronators and neutral runners, as an everyday trainer and for long runs (ie. a marathon trainer) and in particular to runners with high arches.

• Brooks Beast 10 General Info:

When it comes to low arches, flat feet, motion control, the name everybody drops is Brooks Beast. Larger runners (above 200 lbs) with flat feet seem to be the people who get the better benefits from this shoes, and that replace them regularly every year with the new model. But what is it that makes the Beast the long-selling franchise it is? Let’s see how the shoe is built.

• Brooks Beast 10 Sole Unit:

Let’s start with the midsole and its composition. The material Brooks has recently been using for their midsoles is called MoGo, it is a foam compound that replaces their previous Substance 257. According to independent third-party laboratories, MoGo provides a 40% improvement in cushioning and a 22% improvement in returned energy. What’s the difference between cushioning and energy return? Cushioning is the ability of the midsole to absorb the shock of your landing. Landing on a grass field as opposed to landing on concrete, the grass will have more cushioning than the concrete. Energy return instead refers to the capacity of the material you land on to compress (to absorb the shock) and to expand back in a short amount of time. If the foam material compresses and doesn’t go back in shape soon enough, it will not only absorb the shock, but also waste the energy you are putting in each step.
This said, not many independent studies are available to compare the properties of the different foam compounds used by different companies, but these number are a good indicator if you are a previous user of the Beast: this new one will absorb more shock and waste less of your energy while doing so.

The rest of the cushioning is taken care of by Hydroflow, inserts of viscous fluids in the heel and forefoot in order to further absorb the shock of the landing in the areas of max impact. They are comparable the Asics Gels and Nike Airs.

Let’s now have a look at what the Brooks Beast is famous for: its stability elements. Brooks goes the way of a dual density midsole post, in the name of PDRB (Progressive Dynamic Roll-Bar), biomechanically engineered to allow for progressive pronation
control. What it actually is, is an injection of a dual density foam (one medium and one hard density one) in the medial (internal) area of the foot, from the heel to the arch. Having a harder compound right where your foot naturally tends to collapse, helps you prevent overpronation.

Also in the arch area there is Brooks DRB Accel, a plastick shank that wraps the midsole beneath the arch and extends into the midsole towards the heel. The purpose of this is to prevent an innatural side-to-side torsion of the foot during the heel-to-toe transition, keeping your gait in the line it is supposed to be and helping avoiding sprang ankles. You can see a detail of both in the following picture.

For the rest, the sole unit of the Brooks Beast is wide and flat, with not many flex grooves or deep patterns in the outsole. Some runners say that this causes to shoe not to have the best grip on wet or uneven surfaces.

• Brooks Beast 10 Upper:

The upper of the Beast encompasses all the technologies we would expect in a top of the range (130$ RRP) running shoe. Element microfiber mesh ensures breathability to the upper of the shoe while protecting from cold and water. The overlays are strategically placed to keep the foot snug in its position. The shoe has an internal “saddle” to further prevent the foot from moving around in the shoe. Lining has been improved, where some runners complained it used to wear out too soon on previous versions. Talking about the fit, general suggestion about the Beast is to order in a half size bigger than the usual since the toebox is on the small side.

• Brooks Beast 10 Opinion:

The reputation of the Brooks Beast speaks for itself: thousands of runners around the world with heavy overpronation, flat feet and heavy body weight swear by it and reccomend it to other runners.

The shoe is on the heavy side and even the looks are quite bulky, but if you haven’t found any other shoe that helps your overpronating issues, you should give the Beast a try.

On a lighter note, I once heard a quite funny quote in a forum, when a runner asked a comparison between the Asics Evolution and the Brooks Beast, another runner replied: “If the Evolution is the Diet Coke of Motion Control shoes, the Beast is the Rhum and Cola”.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 9

• Brooks Adrenaline GTS 9 General Info:

The Adrenaline GTS 9 is the latest installment of Brooks best-selling shoe. It is a stability shoe aimed at runners who have low arches and tend to overpronate, while offering a still soft and cushioned ride. Brooks packed their best technology in the shoe, concentrating in the sole unit.

• Brooks Adrenaline GTS 9 Sole Unit:

A quick look to the medial (internal) side of the shoe quickly reveals the main stability support of the Adrenaline – the triple density medial post. The injection of a harder foam compound in the medial/arch side of the midsole is an industry standard solution for stability shoes, as it provide support to your foot just in the area where it is needed the most. Some brands, and Brooks is in there, actually deliver a three-density midsole, with a softer posting in the heel area.
Also visible on the medial side is the plastic shank of the Adrenaline, called DRB-Accel. The asymmetrical shank runs all the way across the medial post in order to offer the pronation support in the area where it’s most needed (see picture below). We particularly like the shank in this shoe.

• Brooks Adrenaline GTS 9 Upper:

The upper of the Adrenaline GTS 9 does not provide all the technologies you find in some other competitors (seamless construction, for example) but its design of synthetic overlays is very supportive and efficient – delivering an extremely lightweight stability shoe.
The upper fit of the Adrenaline splits testers in two: lovers and haters. Many of the latter are runners who run in the GTS 6, 7, or 8 who find this shoe less fitting than before.

• Brooks Adrenaline GTS 9 Opinion:

Brooks delivers a very good stability shoe at 105 $ price point. It is more cushioned than the GTS 8 but still more supportive and stable than its direct competitors (for example the Asics GT 2140 or the Nike Structure Triax +12) in an extremely lightweight package, give the amount of stability that it delivers.
Recommended to low arched and flat feet runners with a tendency to overpronate.
