It’s a small thing to complain about, I know. Mizuno may be a bit conservative when it comes to the standard colors for the Inspire and Nirvana series but they unleashed the designers for the Wave Elixir 7. What they came up with, visually speaking, is as striking a shoe as I’ve ever seen. Road hazard orange, lime green, silver and black all topped off with a tiger striped mesh! My first real test of the Wave Elixir 7 was at a local 15K. I knew that this test was gonna hurt. The good kind of hurt.

Mizuno Wave Elixir 7 Upper:

Mizuno redesigned the entire blueprint of the Wave Elixir 7. Everything here is a fresh take and the upper aesthetic is absolutely insane. Mizuno still uses a lightweight, highly breathable mesh but this time it is sublimated with an animal style print straight out of 1987. The overlays are now made from a lighter, more flexible material and are strategically placed to better form the shoe around the arch and heel while leaving the toe box a bit freer.

The Dynamotion lateral lace tab is removed and the heel collar has been lowered. The Wave Elixir 7 gets some updated shoestrings as well. The new laces are rendered in lime green and black and sport a lighter but stiffer feel from the laces in the Wave Elixir 6. Also, for the first time, the Wave Elixir 7 gets a cushy Ortholite sock liner which replaces the older style AP foam sock liner.

Mizuno Wave Elixir 7 Midsole:

Not to be outdone by the upper, the Wave Elixir 7 midsole has been refined to deliver the performance to match the attitude of the upper. All Mizuno running shoes are designed around the Mizuno Wave Plate. This unique construction situates a plastic plate in the midsole of the shoe and can be tuned to match different runners needs.

The Wave Elixir 7 plate moves the arch a bit farther back towards the heel than in previous editions and this results in a slight increase in stability while still allowing enough inward roll to provide a quick transition from strike to toe off. For the first time, Mizuno has introduced their Flex Controller technology to the Elixir series.

Flex Controllers are placed at the forefoot flex point and, according to Mizuno, provide for the optimal degree of forefoot flexion. Mizuno’s G3 wet traction outsole is still in place in the medial forefoot area of the Wave Elixir 7. X10 carbon rubber still ensures durability in the heel and Mizuno’s AP+ midsole formulation provides the bounce.

Mizuno Wave Elixir 7 opinion:

Years ago I was fitted for a Mizuno Wave Maverick as my first true running shoe. The Maverick has since morphed into the Elixir series and I always have at least one pair on hand. As my mileage increased I eventually moved on up to the Nirvana series but I have always had a soft spot for the Elixir. It doesn’t hurt that the Elixir is always ready to run fast either.

The Wave Elixir 7 is certainly no disappointment in either the looks or performance category. I ran the Elixir once on a treadmill and then took it to a 15K. I ran a new personal best that day and finished pretty well against some of the strongest runners in my town. The shoe never gave me any problems at that race or in any subsequent runs.

The arch is solid and the transition is classic Mizuno; fast and with no loss of power through foot strike. It’s an ideal shoe for those of us who need support but also desire a lighter, faster shoe we can take to a race. I even know a neutral footed runner who uses it as her daily trainer.

However, I have noticed that the Wave Elixir 7 fit is slightly narrower than before and the toe box is not quite as wide. I had no issues with this but do be aware if you have a higher volume foot.

Mizuno has brought the heat with this shoe, literally. The Wave Elixir 7 stands ready to eat asphalt and will relentlessly beg you to up the pace. Pain, sweet pain.

We thank the nice people at Mizuno for sending us a pair of Elixir 7 to test. This did not influence our review of the shoe, written after logging a very decent amount of miles in them!

Mizuno Wave Creation 13 Running Shoes Review

Cushioning Running Shoes Reviews

Mizuno Running Shoes Reviews

Reviews

The Wave Creation, Mizuno's high end tribute to premium cushioning and a plush ride has metamorphosed throughout the years but has always stayed true to its roots. The removal of several overlays is immediately noticeable but the midsole, despite being color matched to the overlays, is identical to that of the Wave Nirvana 7. As expected, the Wave Nirvana 8 feels very protective when on the foot.

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 8 Upper:

The sole focal point of the Wave Nirvana 8 is on its upper. Mizuno seems to have looked in the back catalogue when designing the upper for the Wave Nirvana 8. The new upper is reminiscent of that found in the original Wave Nirvana. Mizuno lowered the heel collar and removed the Dynamotion Fit lateral lacing tab found on the Wave Nirvana 7. The flex eyelets from the previous edition are removed in favor of a more traditional looking eyelet row. The Wave Nirvana 8 also employs a less complex series of overlays designed to reduce weight and improve fit.

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 8 Sole Unit:

As stated earlier, the midsole on the Wave Nirvana 8 is carried over from the Wave Nirvana 7. As such, it is still built around Mizuno’s full length stability wave plate. Mizuno utilizes these plastic wave plates as a literal ‘suspension system’ to provide shock attenuation and stability to their shoes. The Wave Nirvana 8 wave plate is tuned to deliver premium stability for an over pronating runner. Over pronation occurs when a runner’s foot lands and rolls too far to the inside, placing extreme stress on the arch and inner shin musculature. In the Wave Nirvana 8 the wave plate travels nearly the full length of the shoe in order to provide stability from contact through toe off.

Still present in the Wave Nirvana 8 sole are Mizuno flex controllers. According to Mizuno testing, flex controllers help provide the ideal amount of forefoot flexibility to aid in improving transition to toe off while allowing for less midsole foam at the forefoot flex point. This design feature aims to accomplish weight reduction while maintaining a flexible, yet stable ride. Other carryover features include Mizuno’s classic VS-1 heel cushioning wedge , premium AP+ midsole foam and an Ortholite sock liner.

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 8 Opinion:

I have relied on the Nirvana series to be my workhorse for 8 years now. No other shoe has consistently delivered the stability of the Nirvana. Although I only weigh 160 pounds at six feet tall, I have very flexible arches which demand additional help from my shoes. And I don’t like adding orthotics to my shoes. I believe that a $100-$150 shoe should be enough. Mizuno delivers by placing the arch support near the heel in their shoes and this is, for me, the ideal way to engineer a shoe.

In regards to the new upper, I have mixed emotions. I’m not a fan of the color combination on this Nirvana. It’s just too…blue. However, it definitely provides a better fit than the previous model and is responsible for the slight weight reduction from the Wave Nirvana 7. The new upper sits much lower on the foot and I had to be careful not to over tighten the laces. Although the previous Dynamotion Fit lacing tab bothered some, it never gave me any problems. I can say that the lateral aspect of the collar is definitely lower than before. Either way, the shoe fits better than before and sports the same stable ride as the Wave Nirvana 7. In fact, I have not tested a shoe that combines this amount of stability with flexibility and cushioning.

Only recently has another shoe threatened to take away the number one spot that the Nirvana has maintained in my shoe rotation. Unsurprisingly, the challenger was the Mizuno Wave Inspire 8 which I reviewed earlier. After many runs in both shoes I must say that as good of a shoe as the new Wave Inspire 8 is, it just cannot deliver the long haul stability of the Wave Nirvana 8. Such is the strength of the Nirvana series, dear readers!

We thank the nice people at Mizuno for sending us a pair of Nirvana 8 to test. This did not influence the review, written after logging more than 50 miles in the shoes!

Mizuno Wave Rider 15 Running Shoes Review

Cushioning Running Shoes Reviews

Mizuno Running Shoes Reviews

Reviews

2011

2012

cushioning

Mizuno

Review

running form

running shoes

running shoes review

training

High mileage runners and weekend warriors alike have gravitated towards the Mizuno Wave Rider as a lightweight but durable shoe with a smooth ride.

High mileage runners and weekend warriors alike have gravitated towards the Mizuno Wave Rider as a lightweight but durable shoe with a smooth ride. The Wave Rider 13 was widely considered the benchmark of perfection in the Mizuno neutral cushioning line and many runners have high expectations for the Wave Rider 15. The Wave Rider 14 left many runners disappointed due to poor flexibility and a slightly different fit, and many were hoping for return to the feel of the Wave Rider 13. Weighing in at 11.1 oz (men’s size 9) and with a heel drop of 12 mm Mizuno seems to be sticking with what has worked in the past.

For those runners unfamiliar with Mizuno’s running shoes it can be quite easy to become a convert. Mizuno lovers speak of great fitting shoes with a smooth natural feeling transition through the gait cycle.

Mizuno Wave Rider 15 First Impressions

The 15th edition of the popular Wave Rider features an improved fit with a lower heel collar after many runners complained of abrasions on the too high heel collar of the last edition. The first thing I noticed about the fit of the Wave Rider 15 is that it runs true to size and the fit feels excellent. An ample toe box is supported by a snug fit throughout the mid foot and heel, and the overlays throughout the upper of the shoe give a nice locked down feel. The cushioning feels firm, consistent with Mizuno’s wave technology, and initially the Wave Rider 15 felt a bit stiff and inflexible. I needed to put the shoe through the paces to truly assess performance.

Mizuno Wave Rider 15 Upper

The Wave Rider 15 upper features a breathable mesh and lightweight construction. The lacing system is straightforward with standard oval laces and the tongue is adequately cushioned. What I liked most about the interior of the shoe was the fairly thin and minimalist feeling and open mesh. The upper is pliable and there aren’t any overlays which feel extraneous. Mizuno uses a durable micro-mesh to reinforce areas on the lateral side of the upper where runners often wear holes, like the pinky toe area.

The fit is pure Mizuno with a snug heel and forefoot giving way to a roomier toe box. The length is true to size and I was impressed with how locked down my foot feels on down-hills and even trails in the Wave Rider 15. This is a shoe which most runners will be able to wear right out of the box without having to spend an annoying break-in period. Overall, the Wave Rider 15 has a durable but lightweight upper with a fantastic fit.

Mizuno Wave Rider 15 Midsole

The Wave Rider 15 features Wave Technology which provides a very smooth transition from heel to toe. The Wave Rider 15 also features an extended wave plate through the mid foot and almost up to the metatarsals of the foot. While this improves the ride of the shoe it does add some rigidity in the mid foot. The toe box of the shoe past where the wave plate ends is flexible which gives a nice toe-off for mid foot and forefoot strikers.

The Wave Rider 15′s cushioning feels soft on top with the firmer wave plates on the bottom creating a pleasantly firm yet responsive cushioning. Mizuno uses its AP+ EVA foam on top of the wave plates and the AP+ feels has maintained its feel and seems to perform well in temperature variations from 20 F to 75 F. The wave plate in the heel is reinforced with more cushioning courtesy of Mizuno’s VS-1 material.

Mizuno also uses Smooth Ride technology which is a gender specific series of grooves that minimize acceleration and deceleration of the foot to even out the ride. Honestly, I didn’t notice this feature in any way but as stated earlier the Wave Rider 15 is a smooth ride.

Mizuno Wave Rider 15 Outsole

The Wave Rider outsole features a large cutout in the heel of the shoe, presumably to save weight, and durably carbon rubber lines the entire outsole of the shoe. The wave plate is exposed in the mid foot area of the shoe which did get fairly beat up after 20-30 miles of dirt/gravel running. Nothing too avant garde in the lug pattern of the Wave Rider 15 and I’m happy to report that the sole does not pick up rocks while running.

Mizuno Wave Rider 15 Performance and Overall Impressions

Mizuno advertises the new Wave Rider as an amalgam of all of the positive aspects of past Wave Riders molded into one shoe. While they manage to hit the mark in fit, cushioning, and support they missed in the flexibility department for me. Lovers of the Wave Rider 13 will be disappointed with this shoe. Instead of feeling like a built up responsive racing flat (like the 13) the Wave Rider 15 feels and functions more like a lightweight stability trainer. This lack of flexibility throughout the heel and forefoot was especially noticed on trails where the shoe had difficulty negotiating cambered surfaces and rocks, and I even rolled my ankle twice. To be fair, this shoe is not a trail shoe but it really did give me an indication of the rigidity of this shoe.

Now, for those who aren’t looking for Mizuno to remake a previous model, the Wave Rider 15 is a fantastic shoe. This is a great all-in-one shoe for those looking to run long, do tempo work, and have a race day shoe in one package. Many runners will like the stiffer mid-foot as it does seem to propel the wearer forward when feet are tired. With a near perfect fit, lightweight and lower profile feel, and great cushioning the Wave Rider 15 is definitely worth a try on!

Please comment with your own suggestions regarding the Mizuno Wave Rider 15. We are always open to differing opinions!

We thank the nice people at Mizuno for sending us this shoe for testing. This did not influence our review of the shoes, written after running 60 miles in it.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 8 Running Shoes Review

Featured

Mizuno Running Shoes Reviews

Reviews

Stability Running Shoes Reviews

2011

2012

Mizuno

over pronator

Review

running shoes

Stability

Support

Mizuno has turned all the dials to 10 on the Wave Inspire 8. Burn!

Mizuno Wave Inspire 8 First Impression:

Great anticipation has been building for the Wave Inspire 8. Many loyal Inspire runners were taken aback by the sweeping changes made to the Inspire 7. Unfold the tissue paper in the box and you’ll see what looks like a Wave Inspire 6 but you’ll find a new but strikingly familiar ride in the Wave Inspire 8.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 8 Upper:

Mizuno turned back the clock when laying out the plans for the upper of the Wave Inspire 8. Gone is the higher cut heel collar and Dynamotion Fit tab of the Wave Inspire 7. Instead we find a much more lower profile upper with similarly cut overlays as found in the Wave Inspire 6.

Mizuno is still using a wide hole mesh for breathability and the overlay material feels identical to that of my old Wave Inspire 6. Also removed are the flex eyelets and the longer tongue of the Wave Inspire 7.

In fact, the only Wave Inspire 7 design carryover I could find was the inner heel lining material, the Ortholite sock liner and some very slightly modified lateral overlays.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 8 Sole Unit

Mizuno reinvented the entire midsole for the Wave Inspire 8. While the VS-1 cushioning wedge is still found in the heel, everything else has changed.

Mizuno reengineered the wave plate in the Wave Inspire 8 to provide a level of stability that I haven’t seen in this series since the Wave Inspire 4. Not only is the wave plate providing more arch support, Mizuno has also slightly flared the medial aspect of the heel to ensure a stable landing and transition through toe off.

In the forefoot Mizuno has carved out a bit more midsole foam at the flex point and added flex controllers which almost act as a secondary wave in the forefoot. Still in place is Mizuno’s AP+ midsole foam which is a more durable and springy formulation of their classic AP foam.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 8 Opinion

I have liked every version of the Wave Inspire series since I ran in the Wave Inspire 2. However, as the series progressed it became less stable and more geared towards light weight and quick transition thus making every Inspire after the 4 not suitable as my workhorse training shoe. When the Inspire 7 came out I broke my half-marathon personal record twice in them! I had relegated the Inspire series to a distance racing shoe for the most part until I ran in the Wave Inspire 8.

Until now, no other shoe has challenged the Mizuno Wave Nirvana as my go to shoe. The Wave Inspire 8 is a real threat to do just that. I simply cannot keep from reaching for these shoes for every run! In fact, I just took them to the New Orleans Jazz half marathon and shattered my previous best by six minutes.

The Wave Inspire 8 is hitting the sweet spot for me – the arch is there, the transition is still quick and the ride is cushioned but never separated from the road. During the race, I never even thought about my Wave Inspire 8’s. And trust me, New Orleans asphalt will exploit any weakness in a running shoe. As Mizuno’s only motion control shoe, the Wave Alchemy 11 is poised to compete with the Brooks Beast and Ariel, the Asics Foundation and Evolution and the New Balance 1123 and 1012.

Mizuno Wave Alchemy 11 Sole Unit:

The nucleus of any Mizuno running shoe is its wave plate. The Mizuno Wave technology utilizes plastic plates that are tuned for different types of feet. The Wave Alchemy 11 employs Mizuno’s most supportive dual fan wave which is engineered to provide targeted support for moderate to severe over pronators. Over pronation occurs when the foot strikes the ground and the arch of the foot collapses too far inward. This excessive motion is great for absorbing the shock of foot strike but also can over stress the plantar fascia and lower leg musculature resulting in injury. The Wave Alchemy 11 plate begins at the heel and travels the entire length of the arch thus controlling over pronation and allowing for a more neutral, centered foot strike.

Alchemy 11 (left) vs 10 (right)

At first glance, the Wave Alchemy 11 midsole seems identical to the Wave Alchemy 10. However, the Wave Alchemy 11 gets a substantial improvement with the addition of AP+ midsole foam. AP+ is Mizuno’s upgraded formulation of their classic AP foam and it boasts improved durability and a bouncier, more lively ride. Mizuno’s VS-1 cushioning compound is still found in the heel and Gender Engineering is also carried over from the Wave Alchemy 10. Gender Engineering is Mizuno’s approach to designing the heel and tread patterns to better suit unique male and female foot strike characteristics.

MizuMizuno Wave Alchemy 11 Upper:

The Wave Alchemy 11 is most strikingly different in its upper design. The Wave Alchemy 11 still retains Mizuno’s Dynamotion Fit collar tab but employs a different mid foot saddle aimed at better locking the foot down and preventing lateral movement inside the shoe. An Ortholite sockliner is still standard equipment. Other changes include a tighter heel fit and softer overlays. Interestingly, the bottom of the Mizuno runbird logo is now placed completely over the lower medial and lateral overlay instead of being sewn under them as in the Wave Alchemy 10. By doing this Mizuno removes one more potential spot of irritation and makes the shoe more streamlined inside. This seemingly small detail shows just how much attention Mizuno puts into the design and update process of their footwear.

Mizuno Wave Alchemy 11 (left) vs 10 (right) upper

Mizuno Wave Alchemy 11 Opinion:

Again, I’m impressed with the latest version of the Wave Alchemy. I ran a trouble free marathon in the Wave Alchemy 10 a week after a hard 15K race. Although I don’t fit the traditional motion control paradigm at 6’ tall and 160 pounds, I have very flexible arches which will give me trouble if I don’t use a supportive shoe. I’m actually at the upper end of what most stability shoes can handle but Mizuno always comes through for me with the Wave Alchemy and Wave Nirvana series.

The Wave Alchemy 11 has a solid ride that transitions well and is durable enough for daily training just like its predecessor. I did notice that the new AP+ foam does indeed feel bouncier and I also appreciated the heel fit of the Wave Alchemy 11 versus the 10. However, it does seem that the upper in the Wave Alchemy 11 has more volume than before. This will probably fit a thicker foot better but I have not had any issues thus far. Having said that, I still prefer the lower profile upper in the Wave Alchemy 10. The Wave Alchemy 11 does outshine the 10 in regards to heel fit as the new design is simply more locked in than before.

The Wave Alchemy 11 continues to provide a lighter, faster feeling option in the motion control category. Rarely does one find a shoe as simultaneously runnable and supportive as the Wave Alchemy 11. It’s a speeding bullet when compared to the motion control competition. It’s not a shoe I would take to a 5K but the Wave Alchemy 11 will handle all the training miles necessary to get you to your personal best on race day.

Review by Theo Clyatt

Let us know what you think of this shoe in the comments!

Mizuno Wave Alchemy 11 Price Comparison:

table.pricebox{width:100%;border-width:1px 0px 1px 0px;border-style:none;border-color:#ccc #fff #ccc #fff;border-collapse:collapse;background-color:#fff;font-size:14px;color:#000}table.pricebox

The Wave Musha draws it’s racing heritage from the Mizuno Wave Revolver.

Mizuno Wave Musha 3 Sole Unit:

The patented Mizuno Wave forms the core of every running shoe that Mizuno makes and the Wave Musha 3 is no exception. The Mizuno Wave is a plastic plate found in the midsole that is engineered to provide long lasting cushioning and support. Although the Wave Musha 3 is a lightweight racing shoe, engineers at Mizuno have crafted the wave plate in the Wave Musha 3 to give over-pronators a touch of support during races or fast training runs. Over-pronation occurs when a runner’s foot rolls too far inward during the gait cycle, often placing extreme stress on the medial structures of the foot and lower leg. In the Wave Musha 3 the medial wave plate extends from the heel all the way to right behind the big toe joint. On the lateral aspect of the shoe the wave stops just past midfoot. This design, along with a slightly wedged heel, allows over-pronators to experience a minimal racing shoe while still having some protection from excessive foot motion. Mizuno’s traditional AP foam is used for the midsole material. The last is also classic Mizuno; fitted in the heel and midfoot with more room in the toebox. The outsole of the Wave Musha 3 features Mizuno’s durable X10 compound in the heel and blown rubber in the forefoot.

Mizuno Wave Musha 3 Lateral

Mizuno Wave Musha 3 Upper:

The Wave Musha 3 keeps it’s midsole heritage but does receive an all new upper. Mizuno removed some of the overlays found in the Wave Musha 2 and replaced them with thinner, yet still supportive, materials. The two forefoot overlays in the Wave Musha 2 have been deleted in favor of four smaller pieces designed to avoid bunching and chafing at the forefoot flex point. The heel overlay still circles the entire shoe to ensure that the foot stays locked into the heel counter during maximum effort running. An additional heel wrap intersects at the eyelet row to keep the foot secured onto the midsole. Mizuno also included a lightweight Runbird logo on the medial side of the shoe while a flashier, more robust Runbird adorns the lateral side. Completing the package are lightweight laces and an AP foam sockliner.

Mizuno Wave Musha 3 Medial

Mizuno Wave Musha 3 Opinion:

I write this review with a smile on my face. As of yesterday I won my first 5k, set a new personal best 5k time and I did it all in the Wave Musha 3. The Wave Musha 3 is everything I could want in a 5k shoe. The fit is slim in the heel and midfoot and opens up just a bit in the toebox. No sloppiness anywhere in the shoe. There is a touch of support right under the heel and arch. The transition is fast and firm; you know exactly where you are on the road. In my experience, soft shoes soak up power and end up making me work harder. The Wave Musha let me put every bit of effort I had right into the asphalt. Cosmetically, the uppers’ Chinese red, lime green and glossy black look ultra aggressive and primed for speed. This shoe is everything and nothing all at once. It disappears while the foot is in motion so you can better concentrate on how much your legs and lungs are burning.

Mizuno has done a fantastic job in bringing to market a racing shoe for those of us with flexible arches. Personally, I would not feel comfortable pushing this shoe past a 10k. That’s not a slight against the shoe, it’s just that I’d be better off with a shoe like the Mizuno Elixir 6 for longer race distances. More neutral runners could easily take this shoe to marathon distance and beyond.

In case you were curious, “musha” is Japanese for warrior. Also updated is Mizuno’s Dynamotion Fit. The shoe still sits in Mizuno’s performance support niche.

Mizuno Wave Elixir 6 Sole Unit:

The Wave Elixir 6 midsole is carried over from the Wave Elixir 5 and retains all of the properties which made the Elixir 5 such a popular shoe. The Mizuno wave still forms the essence of the Wave Elixir 6. Mizuno inserts a plastic plate into the midsole of their running shoes and tunes the plate for specific foot strike tendencies. The Wave Elixir 6 plate is designed with the overpronating runner in mind. Overpronation is defined as an excessive inward roll of the foot during the gait cycle. As a result, overpronating runners often complain of pain and fatigue in the arch or on the inside of the lower leg. Mizuno addresses this concern by providing more structure on the medial, or inner, portion of the wave plate while allowing for more motion on the lateral side. The end result is a more neutral, centered foot strike which disperses impact forces more evenly and allows for better transfer of power.

Mizuno Elixir Midsole

Mizuno has actually segmented the wave plate in the lateral heel of the Wave Elixir 5 and 6. This further enhances medial stability and allows for a smoother transition from heel to toe. Mizuno’s premium AP+ midsole foam provides rebound and long term durability. X10 carbon rubber is found in the heel and the forefoot features Mizuno’s G3 compound which improves wet weather traction. Mizuno’s Gender Engineering includes specific heel radiuses to address differing foot strike patterns between the sexes.

Mizuno Wave Elixir 6 Upper:

The upper is definitely the focal point of this update. Mizuno has re-engineered their Dynamotion Fit to include flex eyelets and a semi floating collar tab, all of which add up to a better, more natural feeling fit. The medial overlays have been beefed up to help hold the rearfoot in place. A necessary step seeing that the heel overlay is not as substantial as the one found in the Wave Elixir 5. However, the overall fit is improved. A new, more open mesh is also utilized and ensures that the foot will stay as cool as possible. A lightweight AP foam sockliner is also featured.

Wave Elixir Lateral

The most striking feature of the Wave Elixir 6 is it’s color scheme. Mizuno went wild with lime greens and electric blues in the men’s version while the women’s version gets an aqua blue and bright yellow treatment. This is definitely a spring/summer shoe.

Mizuno Wave Elixir 6 Opinion:

I have more history in the Elixir series than any other Mizuno shoe. Years ago this shoe was called the Wave Maverick and was my first true running shoe. Since then, the Elixir series has been with me for more races than any other shoe. The Wave Elixir 6 still provides exceptional arch support, resilient cushioning and the classic Mizuno ride. Firm, supportive and powerful. True to form, the Wave Elixir 6 still fits snug in the heel and arch with just a little roominess in the toebox. Just the right amount for me to spread my toes without any sloppiness. The upper is also decidedly low in volume and enhances the shoe’s performance appeal. The fit is improved over the Wave Elixir 5 although I must say I’m more a fan of the Wave Elixir 5’s overall darker, more brooding color scheme.

I primarily use this shoe for 5K to half marathon distances although it can certainly handle more. Like other Mizuno shoes the Wave Elixir 6 rides so well that it feels like it’s not there. So, even though it is not super lightweight on the scale the ride is so expertly engineered that you won’t even care what it weighs.

If you like a little support combined with lightweight performance and eye-catching design you don’t want to miss the Wave Elixir 6. It’s hot!

Review by Theo Clyatt

Let us know what you think of this shoe in the comments!

Mizuno Wave Elixir 6 Price Comparison:

table.pricebox{width:100%;border-width:1px 0px 1px 0px;border-style:none;border-color:#ccc #fff #ccc #fff;border-collapse:collapse;background-color:#fff;font-size:14px;color:#000}table.pricebox

The Prophecy includes every available technology, and luxury, that Mizuno has to offer. As such, it is primed to compete with shoes like the Saucony Paramount and Asics Kinsei.

Mizuno Wave Prophecy Sole Unit:

The most immediately noticeable feature of the Wave Prophecy is it’s lack of midsole foam. In traditional shoes, the midsole foam is usually the first part of the shoe that wears out. Mizuno has now constructed a shoe that uses less foam than any other shoe on the market. In place of the foam is Mizuno’s new Infinity Wave plate. Mizuno engineers it’s wave plates to disperse shock and provide stability during the gait cycle. The Wave Prophecy’s Infinity plate is comprised of two separate plastic plates that are joined at 10 locations by plastic struts from heel to toe. The heel portion of the Wave Prophecy uses the same wave design as the Mizuno Wave Creation 12 but the midfoot and forefoot employ a completely new wave plate design. The top wave in the Wave Prophecy includes Mizuno’s InterCool ventilation system which evacuates hot air from inside the shoe via a series of ports engineered into the plate design. Mizuno’s AP+ midsole foam is in place at the toe of the shoe. Also included is Mizuno’s Gender Engineering which creates male and female specific heel geometries to accommodate differing foot strikes.

Mizuno Wave Prophecy Medial View

Mizuno Wave Prophecy Upper:

The Wave Prophecy upper is built using Mizuno’s Dynamotion Fit design principles that integrate movement of the upper with the natural motion of the human foot. This is accomplished by using materials that move equally well in all directions. Flex eyelets allow the laces to simultaneously keep the shoe locked in and allow the eyelet row to move with the foot. The laces used in the Wave Prophecy are also an all new design. They feature a ribbed texture that aims to reduce the chances of the laces coming untied during a run. The overlays in the shoe are well placed and utilized only where necessary to keep the foot locked into the heel counter and centered over the wave plate. Mizuno also used the attached tongue found in the Wave Creation and Wave Nirvana. Rounding out the upper is an Ortholite memory foam sockliner.

Mizuno Wave Prophecy Opinion:

Let me say this first; I don’t run in neutral shoes. Ever. My feet won’t allow it without a plantar fasciitis flare-up or some other undesirable consequence. So it was with some trepidation that I laced up my test pair of Wave Prophecy’s. I immediately noticed how stable this was for a neutral shoe. The heel and arch fit nicely with my foot profile and the upper was like a second skin. However, I did feel as though the shoe stood taller off the ground than I am used to. As I ran I was amazed by how quickly this shoe got me through each step despite it’s 14 ounce weight. In fact, the shoe never once felt heavy through the seven miles that I ran in it.

The Wave Prophecy is also a head turner due to it’s over-the-top styling cues. Flaming reds, shimmery silvers and high-tech gunmetal grays make up the color palette in the men’s version. A shoe that retails at $200 had better make a visual mark! I‘m definitely all for Mizuno becoming more aggressive with their aesthetics. Nice job there, guys. In fact, I got several compliments and questions about the shoes after my test run. This shoe certainly has an expensive look and feel throughout.

The Wave Prophecy is truly a revolutionary shoe for Mizuno and is an excellent shoe for a certain runner, in my opinion. In all likelihood, high-mileage neutral runners will feel most at home in the Wave Prophecy and I would definitely use it as my go to shoe if my footstrike was more towards the neutral category. However, It’s not a shoe that will cross a lot of boundaries outside of neutral to mild overpronators. I fall into the moderate overpronator category and my main training shoe is the Mizuno Wave Nirvana. If Mizuno ever comes out with an “ultra Nirvana” I’ll be the first in line but for now, I’m sticking with what works for me.

Perhaps most exciting to me is the hope that the innovations present in the Wave Prophecy will trickle down to the rest of Mizuno’s line up. The shoe has a luxurious fit and feel, the ride is deceptively quick and surprisingly stable but, again, is probably best suited for runners who like the Wave Creation and want to experience the pinnacle of Mizuno technology.

Review by Theo Clyatt

Let us know what you think of this shoe in the comments!

Mizuno Wave Prophecy Price Comparison:

table.pricebox{width:100%;border-width:1px 0px 1px 0px;border-style:none;border-color:#ccc #fff #ccc #fff;border-collapse:collapse;background-color:#fff;font-size:14px;color:#000}table.pricebox

Mizuno updates their shoes on a two year cycle. That is, shoes get new uppers every year and a total update every two years. The 2011 Nirvana brings a totally new shoe to the premium stability market.

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 Sole Unit:

All Mizuno running shoes are constructed around the Mizuno Wave. The Mizuno Wave is a plastic plate sandwiched into the midsole of the shoe and tuned with specific foot mechanics in mind. In the case of the Wave Nirvana 7, the wave is structured to limit overpronation. Overpronation occurs when a runners foot rolls too far to the inside, resulting in excessive rotational forces on the foot. The Nirvana series employs a full length wave plate that begins at the heel and extends the length of the shoe. This technology offers better foot control during the entire gait cycle. The Wave Nirvana 7 plate has been updated for a smoother transition while retaining all the support characteristics Nirvana runners expect. Mizuno has also deleted the sensor points on the bottom of the shoe to aid in cushioning and improved transition. A completely new Mizuno technology is employed in the Wave Nirvana 7. Mizuno has introduced flex controllers on the sole to provide optimum flexibility in the forefoot. The flex controllers work like a secondary wave and allow for less midsole foam at flex points thus reducing weight in the shoe. The AP+ midsole formulation is carried over from the Wave Nirvana 6 as is male and female specific Gender Engineering. Also present is Mizuno’s VS-1 compound. VS-1 is found in the heel and forefoot and is utilized to aid in shock absorption.

Wave Nirvana 7

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 Upper:

A completely revised upper is included in the Wave Nirvana 7 update. Mizuno continues to expand their Dynamotion Fit principles that seek to match movement of the upper materials with the motion of the foot. Mizuno achieves this by using stretch mesh in the forefoot and flex eyelets to lock the foot into the midsole while minimizing irritation and undue pressure across the top of the foot. Another unique feature is the attached tongue found in the Wave Nirvana 7. Mizuno anchors the tongue to the midsole with two flexible strips of fabric to ensure that the tongue stays put once the shoe is laced.

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 Opinion:

Since it’s inception the Nirvana series has been my go to shoe for long distance running. Although I am a not a heavy runner my arches are extremely flexible and I must have a shoe that counteracts some of that flexibility. No other shoe has ever offered the exceptional arch support of the Nirvana series. The Nirvana 5 and 6 used a very stiff wave plate which was excellent for pronation control and a snappier transition but did leave me longing for the softer ride of the Nirvana 4. I am very pleased to say that Mizuno has blended the best properties of the Nirvana 4, 5 and 6 into the Wave Nirvana 7. The shoe runs noticeably softer but still provides top shelf arch support thanks to Mizuno’s more streamlined wave plate design. The deletion of the sensor points really opens this shoe up and reduces the harshness found in earlier versions.

In the past Mizuno midsoles seemed to wrinkle sooner than other manufacturers. This problem has been relieved by the introduction of AP+, Mizuno’s new formulation for midsole foam. AP+ also feels bouncier while still retaining the hallmark Mizuno road feel. AP+ actually debuted on the Wave Nirvana 6 but it seems even more durable and fun to run on in the Wave Nirvana 7.

The Wave Nirvana 7 combines flexibility, cushioning and stability like no other shoe before. The fit is seamless and the ride is lively yet protected. Mizuno made sweeping changes to this shoe and that is always a gamble. However, Mizuno has listened to their customers and again proves that each evolution of their wave technology sets them further apart from the pack.

Let us know what you think of this shoe in the comments!

Review by Theo Clyatt

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7 Price Comparison:

table.pricebox{width:100%;border-width:1px 0px 1px 0px;border-style:none;border-color:#ccc #fff #ccc #fff;border-collapse:collapse;background-color:#fff;font-size:14px;color:#000}table.pricebox

As Mizuno’s best selling stability shoe, the Wave Inspire 7 has an impressive legacy to live up to. The upper and midsole are completely revised as is the Dynamotion Fit. Mizuno continues to provide male and female specific models using their Gender Engineering design principles.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 7 Sole Unit:

The heart of any Mizuno running shoe is the patented Mizuno Wave. The Mizuno Wave is a plastic device sandwiched into the midsole of the shoe that provides stability and shock dispersion. In the case of the Wave Inspire 7 the wave plate is designed to curb overpronation. Overpronation occurs when a runner’s foot rolls too far to the inside and places excessive force on the inner foot and arch.

The wave plate in the Wave Inspire 7 is carried over from the Wave Inspire 6. The most noticeable change in the sole unit is the new last that Mizuno designed for the Wave Inspire 7. The last is the fundamental shape of the shoe and is a primary factor in how it conforms to the foot. In recent Inspire models, Mizuno opted to use a roomier last which resulted in a looser fit for those accustomed to the earliest versions of the shoe. However, the last in the Wave Inspire 7 has been tightened up to provide the most secure heel and arch feel that the shoe has ever offered.

Mizuno also introduced their new midsole compound, called AP+, that provides better cushioning and resiliency against compression. Mizuno’s VS-1 cushioning foam is still featured in the heel. In the women’s version, Mizuno altered the heel angle to further help control overpronation and improve transition.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 7 Upper:

Two new features are immediately noticeable in the Wave Inspire 7 upper.

First, Mizuno is using a very open and breathable mesh guaranteed to help keep feet cool in nearly all conditions.

Second, the overlays are now concentrated more towards the heel of the shoe, no doubt part of Mizuno’s plan to give this edition the best heel fit possible.

Also present is Mizuno’s updated Dynamotion Fit collar tab that helps the shoe collar maintain contact with the foot at strike-where the upper is under the most stress. Flex eyelets are present and help the shoe to move with the foot as it travels through toe-off. A cushy Ortholite sockliner is still standard equipment as in the Wave Inspire 6.

Wave Inspire 7 Medial

Mizuno Wave Inspire 7 Opinion:

I have run in the Wave Inspire 2, 4, 5 and 6. I can say this without any reservation; this shoe has never been better. As a runner with flexible arches I demand a shoe that features solid arch support. As such, I was a fan of Mizuno’s narrower last in the early Inspire because it felt made for my foot. While I really liked subsequent versions of the shoe, I could never use them as my main long distance shoes because of the wider last and lower arch they employed.

Mizuno has a hit on their hands for 2011. There are many fans of the older Mizuno fit who will welcome this new Inspire. Everything is there: great fit, arch support, light weight and superb transition. Mizuno knows that a mistake on the Wave Inspire design would be disastrous and it’s quite obvious that great detail and careful attention to customers needs went into the design of this shoe.

In fact, I took my pair out of the box and took over a minute off of my personal best half-marathon time. If you need a stability shoe, do not miss this one.

Let us know what you think of this shoe in the comments!

Review by Theo Clyatt

Mizuno Wave Inspire 7 Price Comparison:

table.pricebox{width:100%;border-width:1px 0px 1px 0px;border-style:none;border-color:#ccc #fff #ccc #fff;border-collapse:collapse;background-color:#fff;font-size:14px;color:#000}table.pricebox

With the demise of the Wave Renegade the Wave Alchemy 10 now serves a s Mizuno’s lone entry in the motion control category. Updates include a plusher midsole and a new upper. Mizuno’s male and female specific Gender Engineering is carried over from the Wave Alchemy 9.

Mizuno Wave Alchemy 10 Sole Unit:

As with all Mizuno running shoes, the Wave Alchemy 10 includes Mizuno’s exclusive wave technology. The Mizuno wave is a dual density plastic plate designed to accommodate different foot strike types. In this particular model the wave plate is designed to limit over pronation which is the excessive inward rolling motion of the foot as it contacts the ground. On the medial (internal) side of the shoe the Wave Alchemy 10 employs a robustly designed dual fan shaped wave that starts at the heel and extends through the arch of the shoe. The lateral aspect of the wave plate features an open shaped design to allow the foot more freedom to move laterally. Also present in the heel area is Mizuno’s VS-1 shock absorbing compound. The most dramatic underfoot difference in the new Wave Alchemy 10 is it’s increased forefoot cushioning.

Mizuno Alchemy 10

Mizuno Wave Alchemy 10 Upper:

The Wave Alchemy 10 upper gets a total redesign including Mizuno’s updated Dynamotion fit. Previous editions of the Alchemy utilized a flexible strip of material located in the lateral upper aimed at reducing gapping of the upper at foot strike. For the Wave Alchemy 10 Mizuno introduced a semi-separate collar tab to perform the same function while allowing for an improved fit. Also present are new flex eyelets to better conform to the shape of the foot while in motion. Mizuno also includes an Ortholite sock liner for extra cushion.

Mizuno Wave Alchemy 10 Opinion:

Alchemy is the perfect name for this shoe as it has the ability to convert my problematic foot strike into road running gold. The Wave Alchemy 10 does a fine job dispelling the notion that “control” shoes are only for heavier or slower runners. I’m a relatively light amateur runner at 6’ tall and 170 pounds but I have always required a solid feeling training shoe under my arches. The Wave Alchemy 10 provides a good combination of arch support and transition. In other words, this is a shoe that doesn’t feel slow or particularly heavy while doing a fine job of supporting my flexible arches.

I ran in the Wave Alchemy 9 for a short period and I can say that, for me, the Wave Alchemy 10 is improved in at least one aspect. The prior Dynamotion fit design in the Alchemy 9 caused some rubbing on the lateral aspect of my ankle and this has, thankfully, been addressed in the Wave Alchemy 10. The new Dynamotion fit collar tab did not cause any irritation to my ankle. The Wave Alchemy 10 upper is light, breathable and, like other Mizuno shoes, after a few runs it really conforms to the foot.

As stated before, Mizuno boosted the forefoot cushioning for the Wave Alchemy 10 and here’s where I’m probably different from everyone else. I actually prefer the thinner and more flexible forefoot of the Wave Alchemy 9. With the Wave Renegade being phased out I do understand why Mizuno decided to make this shoe more plush feeling in the forefoot but I honestly prefer a little more firmness on the front end of my shoes. The Wave Alchemy 10 ride is somewhere between the Wave Inspire and the Wave Nirvana. I actually find the Wave Alchemy to be less controlling than the Wave Nirvana.

The Mizuno Wave Alchemy 10 defies convention and blurs the lines between stability and control footwear. If you like the Mizuno Wave Inspire but feel like it’s not quite enough shoe for your long runs, be advised and take the Wave Alchemy 10 for a ride.

Review by Theo Clyatt

Mizuno Wave Alchemy 10 Price Comparison:

Let us know what you think of this shoe in the comments!
table.pricebox{width:100%;border-width:1px 0px 1px 0px;border-style:none;border-color:#ccc #fff #ccc #fff;border-collapse:collapse;background-color:#fff;font-size:14px;color:#000}table.pricebox

This years model offers several key updates to the midsole and the upper. Mizuno’s Gender Engineering, which provides men’s and women’s specific details, is retained from the Wave Nirvana 5.

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6 Sole Unit:

The wave plate is the core of Mizuno’s running shoes and is a design feature dramatically different from any other shoe company. Mizuno engineers these plastic plates according to the level of support required by different feet. In the stability models, the wave is designed to minimize pronation on the medial side of the shoe while providing less control on the lateral side. In the case of the Nirvana 6, the wave plate extends nearly for the entire length of the shoe in order to provide stabilization at the heel and at toe off. In addition, Mizuno incorporates an additional shock absorbing material, called VS-1, in both the heel and forefoot.

The wave plate is a carry-over from the Nirvana 5 but the midsole material is all-new. Mizuno introduced their new AP+ foam to the Nirvana 6 this year with the added benefits of increased midsole longevity and cushioning properties. The women’s version still includes a specific heel and forefoot for extra protection from excessive foot motion.

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6 Medial Side

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6 Upper:

There are two big changes in the Nirvana 6 upper. Gone is the overlapping heel and mid foot Dynamotion upper found in the Nirvana 4 and 5 and in it’s place is a series of flex eyelets and a semi-separate collar tab. These additions seek to minimize the shoe collar from gapping open at foot strike.
Mizuno also deleted the toebox overlays and added a new two-way stretch mesh aimed at decreasing irritation around the toes. A beefed up Ortholite sock liner is included to provide better cushioning over the Nirvana 5 sock liner.

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6 Opinion:

All the “upgrades” in the world don’t mean much if the shoe isn’t really improved. So how does the Nirvana 6 stack up? I have run in every version of this shoe with the exception of the Nirvana 2 so I feel like I know what works in this shoe and what doesn’t. For me the most important, and consistent, feature of the Nirvana series has been its excellent arch support. I’m not a heavy guy at 6’, 170 pounds but I have quite flexible arches. In other words, I don’t have flat feet but when my foot hits the ground my arch collapses excessively. If I’m wearing a shoe that is too flat inside I will have foot and lower leg issues. In the Nirvana I can literally forget about my feet and just run. This has been true for me in every iteration of the shoe. However, the Nirvana is heavy. Always has been. All that protection comes at a price in weight I suppose. The Nirvana 6 is now slightly lighter than the 5 which is probably due to the reformulation of the AP+ foam.

The Nirvana 6 does indeed feel slightly bouncier than the 5 with the addition of the AP+ midsole and the upgraded sockliner. The new Dynamotion collar tab did take a few runs to get used to as it hit my outer foot differently than the previous versions. Not a big deal though. Overall the shoe has an excellent close fit in the heel and midfoot and it has a rather spacious toebox. The new flex mesh in the forefoot feels nice but made no difference to me versus the Nirvana 5 toebox. The Nirvana 5 and 6 also feel noticeably lower to the ground than any previous version. On the road the Nirvana 6 feels very protective but it is not a fast feeling shoe like the Inspire or Elixir. The Nirvana series has always leaned towards a firmer ride but the 5 and 6 are especially rigid. This is great for road feel and stability but there have been some runs where I missed the extra cushion that was present in the Nirvana 4.

Mizuno understands the needs of the flexible foot and addresses this better than anyone else. Simply put, no other shoe company offers the solid arch support and reliable stability of the Nirvana series. However, some runners may not like the firmer feel that is characteristic of Mizuno running shoes. For runners who prefer a responsive feeling shoe and require maximum arch control, the Wave Nirvana 6 is worth a ride.

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6 Review by Theo Clyatt

Let us know what you think of this shoe in the comments!

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 6 Price Comparison:

table.pricebox{width:100%;border-width:1px 0px 1px 0px;border-style:none;border-color:#ccc #fff #ccc #fff;border-collapse:collapse;background-color:#fff;font-size:14px;color:#000}table.pricebox

This is the promise of the Mizuno Wave Rider 13.

Mizuno Wave Rider 13 Sole Unit:

The sole unit of the Mizuno Wave Rider 13 is the same of previous year model, the Rider 12. As in the 12, the sole unit has been engineered gender specific (read here why women running shoes are different). The women version of the Wave Rider 13 is softer and more flexible in the forefoot.

The cushioning in the neutral trainer is achieved through the combination of three different elements: the most interesting of which being the WAVE component. The Wave is an ondulated bar of plastic material that runs across the midsole. The ondulated (wave) shape provides the bounce and shock absorption, but at the same time gives structure and a minimum of stability to the shoe. We have praised this technology before in other Mizuno shoes, as it is a very clever and lightweight way of giving a great cushioning. The other cushioning factors are the AP midsole and the VS-1 special compound, here insterted in the heel and in the forefoot (softer in the heel and slightly harder in the forefoot). One of VS-1 special characteristics is the ability to return to its original shape, after the compression due to the shock, very fast. The Rider 13 feels very bouncy and responsive – and pleasantly lightweight.

The outsole thread is quite marked and ideal for traction on wet surfaces. Some runners complain the carves are so deep that small rocks get stuck in them.

Mizuno Wave Rider 13 Upper:

The upper of the Wave Rider 13 is very open. Large-threaded mesh is the main material, with plastic overlays added for stability but really not many. A heel counter wraps the heel and attaches to the midsole to keep the heel in position. The result is sock-like feeling. The heel padding is soft but minimal and so is the tongue.
Ortholite removable sockliner provides an additional layer of cushioning and anti-microbial features (to reduce bad odours).

The fit is quite narrow, with a shape that feels comfortable for runners with high arches but might be less than ideal for less high-arched feet.

Mizuno Wave Rider 13 Opinion:

The Wave Rider 13 is a shoe that competes directly with the Asics Gel Cumulus and the Nike Pegasus. Ideal for runnners with high arches and narrow feet, it’s a lightweight trainer that has a quite unique feeling to its ride due to the Wave plate. Runners reccommend to wear 1/2 size higher than the usual as it fits quite snug.

Let us know what you think of this shoe in the comments!

Mizuno Wave Rider 13 Price Comparison:

table.pricebox{width:100%;border-width:1px 0px 1px 0px;border-style:none;border-color:#ccc #fff #ccc #fff;border-collapse:collapse;background-color:#fff;font-size:14px;color:#000}table.pricebox

Slightly lighter than its predecessor, it is one of the reference shoes in its category.

UPDATE 14 dec 2010:we have reviewed the Mizuno Wave Inspire 7

Mizuno Wave Inspire 6 Sole Unit:

If you found yourself comfortable with the Mizuno Wave Inspire 5 then we have good news for you: the sole unit of the Inspire 6 is the same as last year’s.
The key element of this sole unit is the Wave unit, Mizuno’s trademark technology that delivers both cushioning and stability. A traditional running shoe has a midsole which is composed by foam materials; cushioning is obtained by adding a softer material usually below the heel and/or the forefoot (be it Gel bags, Air capsules etc) – stability is obtained by adding an insert of harder foam under the arch of the foot. The Mizuno Wave is an ondulated plate of plastic material that is inserted in the midsole. The plate disperses the forces of the impact throughout the whole lenght of the midsole providing cushioning. The wave form itself acts as a skeleton inside the midsole foam, providing the stability element. On top of that, the use of plastic allows Mizuno to carve out entire areas of the midsole, considerably reducing weight.

This said, the Wave Inspire 6 also incorporates some more traditional cushioning technologies such as the insert of the VS-1 material under the heel and the use of AP midsole (Mizuno’s mix of foam).

Gender engineering is achieved by a different design of the outsole “pods” and flex grooves (the horizontal carves that help flex the forefoot during the toe-off) between the mens and the womens version.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 6 Upper:

The upper also contributes to the flexible, lightweight feeling of the Wave Inspire 6. Only a few essential overlays – slightly more than the ones on the Inspire 5, particularly on the medial (internal) side of the heel and the Mizuno logo lock the foot into position. The mesh used for the upper is very open and breathable.
On the inside we can find the Ortholite sockliner, anatomically shaped, treated with anti-microbial materials to prevent bad odours and removable in case you need to fit custom insoles.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 6 Opinion:

We praised the qualities of the Wave Inspire last year, and we can only confirm our opinion. This is not a stability shoe for the heavy over-pronator. It is lightweight, deconstructed and flexible. But still it offers a very reasonable support for the mild over-pronator or for the runner who tends to pronate more when the mileage increases. At 100$ it is a dangerous competitor for the Asics GT 2150 and the Nike Zoom Structure Triax+ 13.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 6 Price Comparison:

table.pricebox{width:100%;border-width:1px 0px 1px 0px;border-style:none;border-color:#ccc #fff #ccc #fff;border-collapse:collapse;background-color:#fff;font-size:14px;color:#000}table.pricebox

Stiffer than the Wave Inspire 5, Mizuno put special attention into gender differentiation, developing a different midsole for the mens and the womens version.

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5 Sole Unit:

The Nirvana 5 is a very supportive stability shoe. The stability is achieved through the use of Mizuno’s trademark Wave technology, where a plastic wave is inserted in the midsole, acting at the same time as a cushioning and a support device. By inserting this plate (which is lately constructed in vegetable oil for sustainability) in the midsole, the springy nature of the plastic material and the wave shape makes it possible for the shoe to absorb the shock, return energy to the foot and provide support where needed.

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5 Medial View Detail

The plate in the Nirvana 5 runs across almost the whole lenght of the shoe, in order to cushion and guide the stride in all the phases from heel down to toe-off.
Mizuno found a new way to engineer their Wave plates, being now able to produce one single piece in varying densities. Specifically, in the Nirvana 5, the lateral (external) side of the wave plate is softer than the medial (internal) side – so to provide extra support for pronators.
Another strong element of this design is the gender engineering: the mens and womens version have two different sole units, where the women shoe has improved pronation control (as women tend to pronate more, please refer to our article how to choose the best womens running shoes), wider flex grooves in the forefoot and a different heel geometry. The mens shoe presents more cushioning in the forefoot.

A great advantage of the Wave plate is the possibility to achieve weight savings and to open the midsole to provide a much better breathability.

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5 Upper:

Mizuno has recently adopted new lasts, the shape around which the shoe is built and that determines its fit. The new last has a slightly wider toe-box, which will make runners with a wider foot happy, but might not be liked by previous Mizuno customers who got used to the snug fit. An Ortholite sockliner (high quality) is in the shoe for added comfort and the possibility of inserting orthotics.
The upper presents a very open mesh, with quite large synthetic overlays to wrap the foot and keep it in position. The overlays have a special configuration around the ankle so that when you flex your foot during the stride the shoe does not deform too much.

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5 Opinion:

The Nirvana 5 is a competitor of the Asics Gel Kayano 15 - Asics admiral stability shoe. It is a good shoe, one of the most stable. Runners who severely overpronate and runners should give the Nirvana 5 a try, especially if you like the feeling of the Mizuno Wave Inspire but need more support.

Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5 Price Comparison:

Sorry - no matching products found.

Let us know what you think of this shoe in the comments!

Mizuno Wave Inspire 5 Running Shoes Review

Mizuno Running Shoes Reviews

Reviews

Stability Running Shoes Reviews

Mizuno

Review

Stability

Mizuno Wave Inspire 5 Mens and Womens Running Shoes Review. The wave form absorbs the shock and progressively distributes it across the midsole; at the same time the wave returns a spring back that helps the heel-to-toe transition. As opposed to using shock absorbing materials such as air or gel, which are instable, the use of a plastic plate provides the shoe with exceptional stability.
Mizuno uses their VS-1 foam compound, which has added anti-compression proprieties and an adjustable hardness – harder in the heel and softer in the toe area, providing a flexible sole that doesn’t deform quickly.
Last word on the sole construction is the gender-specific engineering, in elements like the heel shape and the toe flex grooves.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 5 Upper:

The upper of the Wave Inspire 5 has a supportive pattern of overlays especially in the heel and medial side and a very open mesh, especially in the toe box.
The fit is snug in the heel and roomy in the forefoot, it accommodates orthotics well.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 5 Opinion:

We are great fans of this shoe. Everything about it is just right: immediately after putting it on you can feel its lightness and breathability. The Wave system successfully replaces the foam achieving a dramatic weight cut and adding underfoot breathability – which you don’t find often in stability or motion control shoes.
The ride is flexible and at the same time well supported – so supported that we definitely recommend it to runners with low arches or flat feet.
Last, at 100$, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 5 is great value for money.

UPDATE 2010: Read our Mizuno Wave Inspire 6 Review

Mizuno Wave Inspire 5 Price Comparison:

Sorry - no matching products found.

Let us know what you think of this shoe in the comments!
