Brooks Trance 11 First Impression:

When I first opened the Brooks box, I noticed the striking design. I tested the yellow and grey color way. The color combination was eye catching, and the overlay mesh had an interesting decorative pattern. I liked the branding design, which has the shoe name located along the lacing system and the Brooks name down its heel.

Brooks Trance 11 Upper:

Brooks Tongue Tied lacing system reduces the sliding of the Trance’s tongue. The upper materials are extremely comfortable. Its open mesh overlay provides breathability and maximum moisture management. The microfiber construction offers durability and comfort in a light fabric. The toe box is wide and gives a generous fit. Its Blown Rubber Forefoot is soft and durable for all weather climates. The environmentally friendly BioMogo sock liner offers additional comfort.

Brooks Trance 11 Sole Unit:

Overpronation occurs when a runner’s stride hits the ground on the lateral side of the heel. The foot strike does not absorb shock efficiently, which results in uneven distribution of weight. This causes the individual’s arches to collapse, or a weakening of the ankles.

The Trance 11 is a luxurious ride and offers top of the line technology to correct overpronation.

Brooks’ patented Caterpillar Crash Pad is one of the featured technologies. The perimeter of the sole is lined with the Crash Pad to provide a smooth ride and maximum flexibility. This allows an efficient stride, and a smooth heel lay down. In other words, it shifts energy from heel to toe and guides the foot towards a more normal and fluid stride.

Brooks patented DNA Technology is full length to offer a more customized ride. Its gel cushioning is made up of non-Newtonian liquid, and responds to the amount of force placed on the foot by providing custom support. Brooks’ DNA also offers twice the normal energy return. The faster you run, the harder the liquid becomes. The tuned density midsole technology adapts to the runner’s weight; providing additional custom cushioning. Additionally, the midsoles are engineered to allow pronation control and stability through its Progressive Diagonal Rollbar.

Brooks Trance 11 Opinion:

Two of Brooks’ bestselling stability shoes are the Adrenaline GTS 12 and the Trance 11. While both are great stability options, what are the main differences between the two?

The materials in the upper of the Trance offer maximum cushion and are softer, which adds to the higher cost. The Adrenaline GTS 12 provided a snugger, more conforming fit. The Trances were plusher and offered maximum comfort. Unlike the Adrenaline GTS 12 model which offers DNA filled pods, the Trance 11 model offers full length DNA cushioning.

The Adrenaline GTS 12 offers adjustable elastic lacing that provides a secure and its signature “midfoot wrap” fit while the Trance 11 Toe Box is wider and offers a roomier fit. In addition, the arch support in the Trance 11 model is lower. Both offer great support, but I preferred the custom fit of the Adrenalines. Coming from someone with flat fleet, the arch support in the Trance 11 was lower than my personal preference .

New Balance 1260 Running Shoes Review

New Balance has turned some heads this last year with the release of its popular Minimus line, widely successful trail line, and the 890 (neutral), 1190 (stability) and 1400 (racing flat) featuring New Balance’s Revlite cushioning which could be the most responsive cushioning on the market. These aforementioned models feature great cushioning, low to moderate stability, and all weigh in under 10 oz.

It was a difficulty transition for me to adjust to the NB 1260, their high dollar motion control shoe with all of the bells and whistles thrown in. Given their recent advances in great cushioning technology and lightweight shoes I would expect New Balance to combine these aspects into a lightweight and more flexible stability shoe with more cushioning than the 1190.

New Balance 1260 First Impressions

What I first noticed when putting on the 1260s was the odd New Balance fit that I haven’t encountered in any of their recent models. I refer to it as the wide heel, narrow toe fit which tends to cause my heel to pop in and out of the shoe. In past models, especially the 763 and 910 trail shoe, I hoped that it would go away as I the shoe broke in a bit. Unfortunately this heel slipping is only exacerbated by how stiff the 1260 is due to overbearing motion control features throughout the midsole of the shoe.

New Balance 1260 Upper

The 1260s upper features a breathable mesh and very durable construction expected from New Balance. The lacing system is straightforward with standard oval laces and the tongue is well cushioning. The interior of the 1260 is plush, especially the heel collar, and the fit is snug throughout the mid-foot. Overlays are rampant throughout the shoe and some feel extraneous and simply for looks. The heel cup of the 1260 features molded plastic which further increases the overall rigidity of the shoe.

New Balance 1260 Midsole

During my first few runs in the 1260 my feet felt encumbered by the rigid Stabilicore post, “A stiff thermoplastic unit running from the mid-foot to the heel of the shoe to provide a smooth transition”. As a slight overpronator I didn’t feel corrected so much as I felt controlled. Added to this motion control feature is plastic stability web located in the mid-foot of the shoe which adds an even more rigid feel. My feet seemed to slap the ground at times due to the lack of flexibility in this shoe and the transition never felt smooth.

The heel drop of the 1260 is a standard 12mm and the myriad of cushioning features in the midsole, including gel in the heel and various kinds EVA foam throughout the length of the shoe, were overshadowed by the motion control overkill.

New Balance 1260 Outsole

A fairly standard blown rubber runs the length of the outsole with a cutout in the heel to save weight. However, at 12.6 ounces, this is by no means a light shoe.

New Balance 1260 Performance and Overall Impressions

I always try to make a concerted effort to find the positive aspects of running shoes and write to the crowd of runner for which the shoe was intended. But, with so many more appealing stability/ motion control shoes on the market I would not recommend the 1260 due to high weight, fit issues, and clunky features.

I managed just over 20 miles over the course of three runs in the 1260 before I felt my feet cramping up due to lack of flexibility in the mid foot and forefoot. I will also point out that I am in no way a minimalist runner and I run in a wide array of shoes on a weekly basis from stability trainers to neutral trainers to racing flats.

I would encourage any runner to try many of the new models in the New Balance line but this shoe missed the mark for me.

Asics Gel Evolution 6 General Info:

The Asics Evolution 6 is a Motion Control Shoe especially designed to support the collapsing arch of a severe over-pronator. The Maximum Support Space Trusstic helps to stabilise the heel on impact. The Guidance Line, a groove built into the outsole also encourages a more efficient running gait. This running shoe’s cushioning is different for each sex, to benefit them both.

Asics Gel Evolution 6 Sole Unit:

The sole unit utilizes all of the latest Asics technological research, but now they are fine-tuned to meet the needs of an over pronator. This model uses revolutionary technology to make the cushioning specific to each gender, with the female model offering a dual density cradle on top of the regular 2 density midsole, ensuring a stable base from which to run for both men and women. The Asics High Abrasion Rubber heel makes the shoe extremely durable.
The rear-foot cushioning system uses silicone gel to minimize the shock of impact and the forefoot cushioning system performs the same kind of protection when toeing off. The durable Solyte mid-sole provides the Asics Evolution 6 with premium lightweight cushioning. The support extends from the heel right to the medial midfoot with a dual density mid-sole especially designed to reduce over-pronation. The Asics Evolution 6 also uses the space trusstic system for maximum support of the arches. This is a plastic shank which effectively wraps around the foot and prevents misalignment.
An especially important feature of the Asics Evolution 6 is the guidance line, a vertical groove which improves gait efficiency. Another special feature of this running shoe is a gender-specific mid-sole unit made of thermal plastic. It stabilizes the mid-foot of the shoe and allows the foot to move naturally, without deformation in the mid-sole caused by over-pronation. The forefront DuraSponge gives good cushioning with flexibility. The women’s model a pillow soft mid-sole layer.

Asics Gel Evolution 6 Upper:

The stretch material of the forefoot creates a comfortable fit and reduces chafing. The open mesh throughout most of the upper allows the foot to breathe and stay cool. The dual layer foam cushioning in the heel collar allows for a snug fit. Additional cushioning comes from the anti-bacterial ComforDry Sockliner which also helps keep the feet dry and healthy.

Asics Gel Evolution 6 Opinion:

The support that the Asics Evolution 6 gives good support to severe over-pronators, allowing one to maintain a natural, efficient running gait, even over long distances. The Maximum Support Space Trusstic extends right into the heel for greater stability with a lightweight and well-cushioned run. All this support comes at a price: the weigth. The Asics Evolution 6 is definitely on the heavier side of the spectrum.

Brooks Beast 10 General Info:

When it comes to low arches, flat feet, motion control, the name everybody drops is Brooks Beast. Larger runners (above 200 lbs) with flat feet seem to be the people who get the better benefits from this shoes, and that replace them regularly every year with the new model. But what is it that makes the Beast the long-selling franchise it is? Let’s see how the shoe is built.

Brooks Beast 10 Sole Unit:

Let’s start with the midsole and its composition. The material Brooks has recently been using for their midsoles is called MoGo, it is a foam compound that replaces their previous Substance 257. According to independent third-party laboratories, MoGo provides a 40% improvement in cushioning and a 22% improvement in returned energy. What’s the difference between cushioning and energy return? Cushioning is the ability of the midsole to absorb the shock of your landing. Landing on a grass field as opposed to landing on concrete, the grass will have more cushioning than the concrete. Energy return instead refers to the capacity of the material you land on to compress (to absorb the shock) and to expand back in a short amount of time. If the foam material compresses and doesn’t go back in shape soon enough, it will not only absorb the shock, but also waste the energy you are putting in each step.
This said, not many independent studies are available to compare the properties of the different foam compounds used by different companies, but these number are a good indicator if you are a previous user of the Beast: this new one will absorb more shock and waste less of your energy while doing so.

The rest of the cushioning is taken care of by Hydroflow, inserts of viscous fluids in the heel and forefoot in order to further absorb the shock of the landing in the areas of max impact. They are comparable the Asics Gels and Nike Airs.

Let’s now have a look at what the Brooks Beast is famous for: its stability elements. Brooks goes the way of a dual density midsole post, in the name of PDRB (Progressive Dynamic Roll-Bar), biomechanically engineered to allow for progressive pronation
control. What it actually is, is an injection of a dual density foam (one medium and one hard density one) in the medial (internal) area of the foot, from the heel to the arch. Having a harder compound right where your foot naturally tends to collapse, helps you prevent overpronation.

Also in the arch area there is Brooks DRB Accel, a plastick shank that wraps the midsole beneath the arch and extends into the midsole towards the heel. The purpose of this is to prevent an innatural side-to-side torsion of the foot during the heel-to-toe transition, keeping your gait in the line it is supposed to be and helping avoiding sprang ankles. You can see a detail of both in the following picture.

For the rest, the sole unit of the Brooks Beast is wide and flat, with not many flex grooves or deep patterns in the outsole. Some runners say that this causes to shoe not to have the best grip on wet or uneven surfaces.

Brooks Beast 10 Upper:

The upper of the Beast encompasses all the technologies we would expect in a top of the range (130$ RRP) running shoe. Element microfiber mesh ensures breathability to the upper of the shoe while protecting from cold and water. The overlays are strategically placed to keep the foot snug in its position. The shoe has an internal “saddle” to further prevent the foot from moving around in the shoe. Lining has been improved, where some runners complained it used to wear out too soon on previous versions. Talking about the fit, general suggestion about the Beast is to order in a half size bigger than the usual since the toebox is on the small side.

Brooks Beast 10 Opinion:

The reputation of the Brooks Beast speaks for itself: thousands of runners around the world with heavy overpronation, flat feet and heavy body weight swear by it and reccomend it to other runners.

The shoe is on the heavy side and even the looks are quite bulky, but if you haven’t found any other shoe that helps your overpronating issues, you should give the Beast a try.

On a lighter note, I once heard a quite funny quote in a forum, when a runner asked a comparison between the Asics Evolution and the Brooks Beast, another runner replied: “If the Evolution is the Diet Coke of Motion Control shoes, the Beast is the Rhum and Cola”.

Saucony Progrid Stabil CS General Info:

The Stabil is Saucony’s take on the Motion Control shoes, footwear for severe over pronators. The previous Stabil had a considerable number of fans among runners and this version packs a few updates. Even though some runners dislike the changes added (all in the name of better flexibility), Runner’s World awarded this shoe with their Best Update badge. Let’s see the details of this shoe.

Saucony Progrid Stabil CS Sole Unit:

One of the most important features in a Motion Control shoe is the dual density post in the midsole. The post is an injection of a harder foam material in the areas of the midsole where your foot need more support than cushioning. Every brand puts their post in the areas their developers believe the foot needs more support. Usually this means the medial side of the shoe, from right below the arch going backwards towards the heel. The Stabil CS is one of the few brands who offer a Motion Control shoe where the post runs along all the foot (only on the external side) all the way to the forefoot. This allows the shoe to offer an incredible support during all the duration of your foot’s impact on the ground and during the whole heel-to-toe transition. While this might mean a rigid and stiff shoe, Saucony counterbalances this with great cushioning in the rest of the shoe – both through a great foam compound and through the Heel Progrid cushioning system and the result is a stable, supportive Motion Control shoe which feels at the same time incredibly flexible.
Flex grooves carved in the forefoot contribute to this feeling.
Last, a good asymmetrical plastic shank under the arch makes sure the foot stays in the right position during the heel-to-toe transition.

Many runners underestimate the importance of the upper in a motion control shoe and focus their attention only to the sole unit.
The upper overlays are key to add the necessary support and keep your foot in place (and comfortable!) during the run.
Saucony Progrid Stabil CS features Arch Lock on the medial side, a plastic “cage” that wraps around your arch and connects the midsole to the lacing system.
Compared to the past, the Stabil has been widened so to accommodate wider feet and/or orthotics, which are very important for severe overpronators.

Saucony Progrid Stabil CS Opinion:

Saucony put all their efforts in delivering a shoe that is very supportive but at the same time feels comfortable and flexible – and they delivered.
We recommend this shoe to heavy over pronators, runners with low arches and flat feet, who will find one of the best supports in the market together with a roomy upper that can accommodate orthotics and/or a wide foot, which is tipically the case for people with flat feet.
At 115$ price point, this shoe doesn’t have all the frills that you might find in other shoes – but it does its job very good and it is one of our best choices.

Nike Zoom Nucleus + MC General Info:

The Nucleus is the only shoe that Nike presents for their Motion Control line. Everything on this shoe screams “support”, let’s have a look and see if it’s true.

Nike Zoom Nucleus + MC Sole Unit:

At a first look you can notice that the Nucleus MC+ is based on a very solid sole unit. First of all, the midsole is fairly high from a side view and if you turn the shoe upside down and look at the outsole you’ll notice that it is not deeply carved – the opposite – and it is very robust.
There is a very large piece of dual density foam injection (the darker grey material) that goes from deep in the heel till right under the arch, providing all the possible support during the heel strike and on the transition from there to the midfoot, preventing the arch to collapse excessively. Further, the dual injection post is aided in its duty by TPU (plastic) inserts.
A firm plastic shank wraps the foot in the mid area from the external to the internal side of the arch, keeping heel and toe aligned during the transition and it is probably the best shank in Nike’s stable.

The heel is decoupled (split in two sections), one of which lands on the harder density foam in order to provide guidance to the foot during the heel-to-toe transition.

Support is achieved in the toe area too, by providing flex grooves (the carved lines that allow the front of your foot to flex and lift your toes off the ground at the end of the gait) which are not deeply carved.

Nike Zoom Air and the Nike+ enabled pocket complete the technology dotation of this shoe.

Nike Zoom Nucleus + MC Upper:

Upper design is spartan and slightly old-fashioned, but we have to admit Nike did a very good job on this upper. There is not a over-abundance of synthetic leather overlays, but the ones present all hold the shoe together in a very effective and efficient way.
On both sides of the shoe you can find one overlay that connects the toe with the last eyering and then again to the midsole, and two strong overlays that connect other two eyerings with the medial and the external heel side of the midsole. The womens shoe here differs in the way that there is an extra, wide overlay that wraps your arch.

The rest of the upper is made of a very breathable mesh and the strategic positioning of the overlays makes it so that the mesh part are very open.

Nike Zoom Nucleus + MC Opinion:

When looking for a Motion Control shoe, runners often look only at the quality of the solutions implemented in the sole unit. The upper structure is very important as well because keeps your foot in the right place.
The Nike Zoom Nucleus+ MC achieves good levels of control and support, and at the same time the intelligent design of the upper overlays makes it possible for this shoe to be lightweight and breathable – which is often not the case for motion control shoes.
We recommend this shoe to heavy over pronators and runners with severe flat feet who want the protection and support their foot demands but at the same time want a comfortable and lightweight shoe.

Asics Evolution 4 General Info:

The Asics Evolution 4 is a Motion Control Shoe which means it is built to support the over-collapsing arch of a severe over pronator. Extra elements of stability are added on the midsole in order to provide the foot with the adequate cushioning in certain areas and instead supporting some other.

Asics Evolution 4 Sole Unit:

The sole unit includes all of the latest Asics’ technologies, but they are fine-tuned to fit the needs of an over pronator.

First and most important, the DuoMax injection of a firmer foam in the medial side of the midsole (you can recognize it as the darker, grey part). This insertion is preventing your arch from collapsing too much, while the rest of the foot, such as the heel and the toe, can receive the necessary cushioning.

Another essential part is the plastic shank (Asics’ Space Trusstics System) that wraps the midsole and, for this shoe, actually goes all the way back, inside the DuoMax foam towards the heel. The shank is a key component of a shoe’s stability, as it prevents the disalignment of the foot axe of the heel and the one in the toe. And we expect the shank to be more accentuated in a Motion Control shoe. The one present in the Asics Evolution 4 is one of the best on the market.

Of course Gel technology is in charge of the cushioning of high impact areas as the heel and the forefoot, while Asics’ Solyte – a material which is lighter and softer than normal foam (EVA) – helps absorbing the impact on the ground (because over pronators and heavier runners need stability and control, but a good amount of cushioning as well).

Asics Evolution 4 Upper:

The upper of the Evolution 4 is wrapped around a pretty wide last, making this shoe comfortable for people with a large foot which is often, in the case of flat feet and over pronators.

Extra comfort is added by a wide design of the toe area with plenty of mesh. The use of overlays of an elastic material (BioMorphic Fit) helps adjust the upper to the natural expansion of the foot that happens during the footstrike.

Other touches are the Ortholite sockliner that improves the comfort sensibly and the use of memory foam in the lining over the heel, to adjust its shape to yours.

Asics Evolution 4 Opinion:

Many Motion Control shoes often feel a bit stiff and inflexible to runners. Asics Evolution 4 does a very fine job in providing an effective control and support while still offering a soft and lightweight ride.

Definitely recommended for over pronators, runners with flat feet (low arches) and heavier runners, this shoe will prevent many ankle/shin injuries.

The pricepoint is very reasonable for all the specs of the shoe.
