Adidas to launch SOLARBOOST, an aerospace engineering-inspired running shoe driven by performance.

Adidas has announced the launch of SOLARBOOST, the brand’s new lightweight and functional performance running shoe. Inspired by NASA aerospace engineering and a runner’s own self-confidence, the shoe features the brand’s signature BOOST technology in addition to new Tailored Fiber Placement technology.

The shoe will launch in select United States stores and online on May 17th, and will be released in all stores around the world on June 1st. It will be priced at $160 USD.

“We knew it was time to challenge the status quo of a performance running shoe,”

Senior Product Manager of Adidas Running Chris Ekman said.

“To create a lightweight, supportive and comfortable silhouette for every runner, we took inspiration from the automotive and aerospace industries and discovered Tailored Fiber Placement, a precision manufacturing technology that allowed us to stich materials together more precisely than ever before.”

Along with the brand’s own BOOST technology, SOLARBOOST contains new Tailored Fiber Placement technology. It utilizes Aramis data to construct fibers in the mid-foot that feature Parley material content, according to Adidas. The technology allows the lightweight shoe to give a runner support and drive, along with comfort, with one’s performance in mind.

“We combined [Tailored Fiber Placement] with an updated energy rail and optimized BOOST for more efficient take-off,”

Ekman said.

“In pioneering the use of Tailored Fiber Placement within the running footwear industry, we were able to engineer the most technical running silhouette ever created by Adidas Running.”

With its release, Adidas and the SOLARBOOST model are taking Nike’s recently launched Epic React Flyknit shoe head on. The Epic React Flyknit features Nike’s springy React midsole. But, according to Adidas, the SOLARBOOST produced a higher energy return throughout one’s entire run when compared to the Epic React Flyknit. This conclusion was made through internal research, which was then verified by an independent external partner, the company stated.

According to Adidas, SOLARBOOST’s running silhouette is 15 grams lighter than the brand’s previous version, and its lightweight midsole is made up of 85 percent BOOST technology to offer cushioning yet still provide energy return. The running shoe’s outsole contains an optimized stretchweb that is engineered to mold to a runner’s foot while maintaining grip for flexibility throughout his or her stride.

The shoe also features an updated energy rail that works with the BOOST technology to maximize stability, in addition to heel design that is supportive and lightweight to allow one’s Achilles tendon freedom of movement and an enlarged fit.
