Summary
This is just an overview, not a review. We did not test the Gel Excite 6 yet.Asics has a few models in their entry-price point range. The most popular is definitely the Gel Contend series, but at times we feel it to be too basic. Enter the Gel Excite 6: for just a little more than the Contend it introduces a slew of extra technology that - while not making this shoe premium just yet - help it stand out from the crowd.
Speaking about the sole, the Excite is made of AMPLIFOAM, a foam compound by Asics that is meant to deliver a soft/plush cushioning, flexibility and comfort while keeping the weight low and the durability high. A welcome addition is the Gel cushioning unit in the heel, to help dampen the impact when landing.
The upper of the shoe is made of a Jacquard mesh fabric that is flexible and breathable - ideal to maintain the foot fresh and dry when working up a sweat. There is an Ortholite sock-liner to provide extra comfort and microbial control.
In summary, the Asics Gel Excite 6 is a very tempting offering from the Japanese brand: it manages to deliver a shoe that is lighter (just) than 10 ounces, with soft and durable foam with the addition of a rear foot Gel unit and a very well designed, if traditional upper. The 8mm drop is also a welcome variation from the 10-12mm that you usually find in entry level running shoes.
