The Metaspeed Edge is a very popular super racer that gets updated annually. It's most suited to runners who are heel strikers and who have a high cadence. The Edge is a lightweight racer with a more stable ride than most carbon racers.
This year's Edge has received some very big updates that improve its ride. This comparison will tell you which version is better for you: this year's Tokyo or last year's Paris version.
The Edge Tokyo has a dual-density midsole with new FF Leap on the top and FF Turbo+ on the bottom. FF Leap is an A-TPU foam that’s light and soft. The FF Turbo+ on the bottom is firmer and heavier. FF Leap returns a higher level of energy but FF Turbo+ is more stable and provides more support.
The Edge Paris has a single-density midsole made of only FF Turbo+. This means that it has a more consistent, smoother ride than the Tokyo. The Paris is also much firmer than the Tokyo. The Tokyo has a more forgiving ride which is more energetic.
The Tokyo has a more modern ride than the Paris thanks to the layer of new FF Leap in its midsole. It feels more dynamic and it feels bouncier than the Paris. The Paris feels more like an old school racing flat without much bounce.
If you need more support, the Paris is firmer and more stable. There’s less lean bias and foot strikes feel more planted in the Paris.
Both versions have S-shaped carbon plates but the Tokyo is more flexible than the Paris. It feels better when you’re going slowly because it has a less rigid sole. The Paris has a more prominent rocker than the Tokyo because of its stiffer midsole.
The Tokyo and Paris have the same outsole design. Durable rubber covers the high wear areas so it has a relatively durable outsole compared to other super shoes. The exposed FF Turbo+ midsole foam is also decently durable.
The Tokyo’s upper feels more refined than the Paris‘. It fits better and it’s more comfortable. The main difference is that the Tokyo is true to size whereas the Paris fits a half size small. The Tokyo has a wider toe-box so it feels more comfortable than the very narrow toe box of the Paris.
The Tokyo’s material is also thinner and more breathable so it’s better for racing in warm temperatures as it allows more air to penetrate the upper and cool your feet down. Foot lockdown is good in both versions.
They have uppers which are more suited to narrow feet than wide feet so if you have really wide feet, they won’t be comfortable.
Buy the Edge Tokyo if you prefer a softer ride with more bounce. It has a plusher ride than the Edge Paris and it has more long-distance comfort. It has a more flexible midsole which isn’t as jarring as the Paris. It also has the superior upper that fits better and is more breathable.
Buy the Edge Paris if you like a firmer ride which is more stable. It’s better for heavy runners because it provides more stability and more support. The Edge Paris has a stiffer midsole which results in a more prominent forefoot rocker. The Edge Paris is $20 cheaper than the Edge Tokyo but it’s a little bit heavier.
