Verdict
The ASICS Gel Nimbus 28 is a comfortable, firmer-than-average, max-cushioned trainer. Version 28 is significantly lighter than version 27 however, it has the same FF Blast+ midsole that lacks energy return considering its high price. This is the best Nimbus version to date but I crave more excitement and more liveliness whenever I run in it.
The Nike Pegasus 41 is a comfortable fitting, bland daily trainer best suited to relaxed runs which are short or middle-distance. It has a firmer ride than most daily trainers due to its airbag setup and while it has a new ReactX midsole, it doesn’t feel significantly different to prior versions. It also doesn’t feel more energetic than its predecessors. Version 41 has an increase in stack height which makes it one of the heaviest versions in recent years.

Sole unit: Gel Nimbus 28 vs Pegasus 41

The Nimbus has a midsole made of soft FF Blast+. It delivers a plush underfoot feel. The Nimbus has one GEL unit, in the heel. The GEL unit absorbs vibration during foot strikes.

The Pegasus has a medium-firm ride with forefoot and heel Zoom Air units and a ReactX midsole. The Nimbus has a cushioning system which gives you the responsiveness and bounce of modern TPU-foam midsoles while the Pegasus has an old school ride.

The Nimbus has a compression moulded insole and foam lasting which produces a plush step-in experience unlike that of the Pegasus.

The Pegasus is firmer than the Nimbus which makes it better suited to short, tempo runs unlike the Nimbus which shines on slow long-distance runs or daily training runs.

Both the Nimbus and Pegasus provide stable rides. The Nimbus has a midsole that flares out and provides a large, stable base. The Pegasus has a firm, midsole with no lean bias. The high stack height and high amount of cushioning means that the Nimbus doesn’t have the ground feel that the Pegasus has with its firm, thinner midsole.

The outsoles of both the Pegasus and the Nimbus have generous amounts of rubber which should last at least 800km. Traction is great on both shoes. The EVA foam midsole of the Nimbus will most likely lose cushioning over the life of the shoe whereas the Pegasus’s React foam has proven to not lose much cushioning over time.

Upper unit: Gel Nimbus 28 vs Pegasus 41

The Nimbus upper oozes luxury. It has a plush and secure heel dip with a smooth and soft interior which is sleeved. It’s made from breathable knit and has a narrow fitting upper but it’s available in a wide and extra wide version.

The upper of the Pegasus is made from an engineered sandwich mesh. It has a long, padded tongue. The heel counter of the Pegasus flares away from the Achilles to not irritate and foot lockdown is good. The forefoot of the Pegasus is accommodating but the shoe is available in additional narrow, regular, wide and extra wide versions if you need them.

Which one to buy: Gel Nimbus 28 vs Pegasus 41

With the Nimbus, you get a super soft ride. It has a plush, luxurious padded upper. If you want a high-mileage shoe for long, slow runs and you don’t mind paying the premium, the Nimbus is the shoe for you.

If you want a solid, durable running shoe which is capable of all types of runs, the Pegasus is for you. It’s faster and costs much less. The Pegasus is not as plush or comfortable as the Nimbus but it makes up for it in versatility and better ground feel.
