Asics GT-2000 2 General Information:

The Asics GT-2000 2 is the second iteration of the model, which was based largely off the GT 2170 of years past. This version offered subtle revisions from last year’s model, providing a solid, dependable run in a good, multi-purpose running shoe.

Asics GT-2000 2 Impression:

The first impression you will get from this shoe is how comfortable it is. While running, it is both supportive while having the feel of a neutral trainer. It lacks the slightly clunky and heavy feeling that many other shoes in its class has. While Asics has them weighing in at 11oz, my pair of shoes came in as 10.7 oz. It is a great shoe for both running and specific training purposes, with great results for long runs, maintenance runs, and some threshold workouts.

Asics GT-2000 2 Sole Unit:

The Sole Unit of the Asics GT-2000 2 has three distinct parts. Working down, there is a layer of rubber cushioning. Between the mid sole and the back of the heel is Asics’s signature Gel technology with a gel pad that supports the heel and ankle. The midsole and the underside of the shoe is supported by the FluidRide system.

The structure system of the shoe is completed with a plastic trussed and Asics’s Dynamic DuoMax heel pad on the interior side of the heel. The underside of the FluidRide system is marked with a guidance line, designed to move the energy of a heel strike into the forefoot for additional power.

Asics GT-2000 2 The Upper:

The comfortable Upper of the GT-2000 2 is layered and composed of two materials; an inner cloth material that is found in most running shoes and a thin cloth webbing on the outside.

Asics GT-2000 2 Opinion:

The Asics GT 2000-2 is another reliable stalwart model that ought to be a consideration when selecting your next shoe. It is a big improvement on the prior GT-2000 model, being lighter and less clunky than its predecessor. The FluidRide system provides both comfort and support without being too hampering, thus making the shoe feel more neutral than supportive.

My only negative opinion about this shoe is its durability which is reflected in my rating above. The FluidRide system, while comfortable and supportive, has also degenerated very quickly. Enough so that a little after 300 miles, I was feeling the ground underneath me.

While not necessarily horrible enough to not want to purchase this shoe in the future, I certainly expect a longer lifespan out of a shoe for runners with a mild pronation and I have had several Asics shoes that did not expire until 600-700 miles.

Despite my durability concerns, the GT-2000 2 has earned a spot in my shoe rotation as it fills a niche between being a neutral shoe and a support shoe. It can handle just about any type of run (save speed work) and performed exceptionally well on both long and maintenance runs.

We thank the nice people at Asics for sending us a pair of GT-2000 2 to test. This did not influence the outcome of the review, written after running more than 50 miles in them.
