Weight

We usually consider 10 ounces a "medium" weight for a running shoe: less than 10 and we are entering the lightweight category and above 10 the shoes start to be heavy.

Heel-to-toe drop

Heel drop is the measurement in mm of the difference between the height of the heel and the toe of the sole.

A lower drop (0mm - 5mm) promotes running on mid-foot and fore-foot, while higher drops (8mm - 12mm) are more traditional and meant to support a heel-striking gait.

Our verdict

The Saucony Excursion TR13 felt good as an everyday shoe to walk around in or stand in. On the trails these shoes did not provide the performance that I like in a trail shoe.

Introduction Saucony Excursion TR13

The Saucony Excursion TR13 is a mid-priced trail running shoe. This is a neutral running shoe with a 8mm offset at a weight of 9.7oz. It consists of versafoam that provides cushioning from heel to toe.

I like the color scheme of the shoe and how lightweight it felt. I laced up and right away I knew that the shoes were a little too small.

The toe box was also tight and the lack of arch support could be felt with each step.

I took them out on the trail and was able to get in 4 miles before I felt my feet tiring. The trail was soft and hard packed dirt with rocks and roots. It is a pretty flat trail with a couple of small hills.

These shoes are pretty light weight so I could run a strong pace. They felt a little unstable as I would go over the rocks or uneven terrain, so I found myself guarding.

I took the shoes out a few more times and tried to get in higher mileage each time, unfortunately I could only get up to 8 miles before it was too painful to run any longer.

The outsoles of the shoes have triangular-lugged grips that are suppose to help with footing. I didn’t find the lugs comfortable as I could feel them with each and every step.

The shoes are lightweight so you could maintain a descent speed on the trail. My feet would just tire out due to the lack of support for my feet.

The versafoam cushioning is nice at first but it seemed to break down after the 5th run in the shoes. They were a very snug fit so I had to wear my lightweight socks which was uncomfortable in itself.

Overall, if you plan not to run long distance I feel that you can enjoy these shoes. They may be better just for an afternoon hike or walk.
