Adidas Supernova Glide 5 General Information
The Adidas Supernova Glide 5 is the latest update of the tried and true Supernova running line.
Adidas Supernova Glide 5 Impression
The model I received was avivid teal and blue which are a couple of my favorite colors, and perfect for the Spring without being outrageously bright. Whether walking or running on soft or harder surfaces, this shoes offers maximum comfort and cushion. The upper fit comfortably snug on my rather narrow foot, but I did experience some heel-slippage while running because the shoe seems to run about a half-size big. This was easily remedied by changing the lacing near my ankle.
My first few runs in the Adidas Supernova Glide 5 reminded me most closely of an even more cushioned Saucony Mirage with the soft but responsive ride on both road and trail. I have completed comfortable easy runs in these shoes and also attempted some faster progressions. These shoes feel best when running easy or at a slower pace. Adidas recommends this shoe for paces between 7:00 and 12:00 per mile. I would narrow that range to 8:00 to 12:00 per mile as the weight of the shoe becomes apparent the faster you go. With an 11mm heel-to-toe drop, I found that this shoe does encourage heel-striking to a greater degree than usual. If you do not heel-strike heavily, you may find this shoe to be a bit restrictive at faster paces, but relaxing on easy or slower runs.
Adidas Supernova Glide 5 Sole Unit
This shoe employs a Continental rubber outsole which provides improved traction over any terrain and even in wet conditions. As I have said many times in this review, the shoe is soft yet responsive which can be attributed to the stiffness of the outsole. The midsole of the shoe uses the Adidas TORSION System for mid-foot support. I found this plastic piece to be more motion-restricting than supporting. If you are into more minimal shoes, you may prefer a much lower ride than this shoe will offer. However, if you are used to traditional trainers, this shoe would be a great addition to your collection because this shoe is incredibly cushioned, but not overdone with technology. This is an extremely reliable shoe in that you could grab for nearly any run in any condition on any surface.
While working on the review for this shoe I have been battling knee pain and I found that the Supernova Glide 5 provided a relaxed ride for both my feet and knees. However, in healthy training I would use this shoe on recovery days or for warm-up/cool-down before and after workouts. On runs when you just want to feel good and take it easy, like the day after a hard session, these shoes provide a cloud-like sensation underfoot. For most of my running, I prefer shoes lower to the ground, but I enjoy a soft-ride and appreciate this quality of the Supernova Glide 5.
Adidas Supernova Glide 5 Upper
The upper uses active FOR MOTION technology to provide stretch as your foot moves through the gait-cycle. There are no aggravating seams or liners to harm your foot, and the supple material used in the upper is wonderfully form-fitting.A GEOFIT collar around the ankle provides security, but is not restrictive.
Adidas Supernova Glide 5 Opinion
To summarize, the Adidas Supernova Glide 5 is a good option for those seeking a dependable, cushioned shoe that come in exciting season-appropriate color ways. While not a prime choice for mid to forefoot strikers, it does offer something for virtually everyone in terms of durability, comfort, and support on the road and trail.
We thank the nice people at Adidas for sending us a pair of Supernova Glide 5 to test. This did not influence the outcome of the review, written after running more than 50 miles in them.
