The Saucony Hurricane 22 hits the sweet spot where soft cushion meets moderate stability, providing a smooth and supported yet slightly heavy and warm ride. The plush stability plus durable sole unit make this shoe worth the higher price tag.

WHO IS IT FOR
Wear this shoe for recovery and long runs. Runners who do well in a med-heavy shoe will enjoy Hurricane's smooth ride for faster-paced efforts as well.

Saucony Hurricane 22 Intro

The Saucony Hurricane is a long-running shoe for the brand and their premium stability option in a line which includes the Liberty, Guide, and Omni. Hurricane is the brand’s neutral trainer Triumph, with added stability features.

Like the Triumph, Hurricane spent the last five models in an ISOFIT upper. Help me understand the math for this long-time favorite from Saucony.

From everything I can see, there were 17 versions of the Hurricane and then 5 with the brand’s ISOFIT upper system; now we’re on Hurricane 22 and not 23. (Oops!)

I expected Hurricane 22 to be similar to Brooks Adrenaline since the upper first is similar—with half size bigger shoe in the Brooks.

Running with 1 shoe on each foot, I find it’s much more comparable with Brooks’ more plush stability offering, Transcend.

Here’s the breakdown: Hurricane is an 8 mm. offset compared with Transcend’s 10 mm. (up from 8 in past models, in the Transcend 6 & 7). The cushion in both is amazing, but Hurricane offers a touch more under the arch.

My foot feels more supported all around in Hurricane, but Transcend offers a lighter-feeling ride though is .2 ounces heavier.

(Note: My Transcend has hundreds more miles on them [more compressed, but I’m trying to consider the life of the shoe] and is also half size bigger to get a comparable fit.)

Hurricane also sits in the top tier of cushioned stability shoes—and high price point at $150—with ASICS Gel-Kayano.

Drop height is a significant factor separating these shoes. Compare Hurricane’s 8 mm. with Kayano’s 11.4 mm. (men’s) and 14.1 mm. (women’s). Hurricane offers longer-lasting cushion for long runs.

New Balance Fresh Foam Vongo offers a similar plush feeling underfoot with a 4 mm. drop and a more stretchy, fitted upper.

Likewise, HOKA ONE ONE offers their 4 mm. offset stability shoe Arahi, as an ultra-lightweight, highly cushioned shoe.

I enjoyed some tempo runs in Hurricane but definitely noticed the drop in weight when choosing Nike Odyssey React for my last fast-paced stint.

The trade-off is higher support in Hurricane’s upper and a more durable outsole, for lighter weight in the Odyssey; both bless my feet with supportive cushion.

“Ahhhhhh…These have the abundant cushion I remember from the Hurricane ISO 4, and I love the plush feel!” I thought, as I quickly put them on for the first time after opening the new shoe box like it was Christmas morning.

In my first run I could feel that this update offers more stability in the midsole than its ISOFIT predecessors. New foam and a medial guidance frame receive two thumbs up from me.

Looking at and feeling the new PWRRUN+ midsole through the cloth membrane below the sockliner (and extra padding), along the side, and especially where it peeks through the outsole rubber, the look of individual pellets mashed into a single piece reminds me distinctly of adidas boost™.

It functions much the same with energy return and durability.

PWRRUN+ is 28% lighter than its predecessor EVERUN, boasts the brand https://www.saucony.com/en/blog?url=%2F/saucony_us/pwrrun/.

I cannot find the name of the material Saucony used, only that the brand has been formulating this midsole for the last five years.

A rocker-like heel and springy toe create a smooth ride. Unlike EVA which gets sloppy when hot and ultra firm in the cold, this midsole material maintains its structure and cushion no matter the temp.

I can attest to it faithfully bouncing back at -20° F.

A hard TPU guidance frame on the medial (big toe) side of the shoe replaces the dual density foam in previous versions and supports the sole from the ball of the foot to early heel.

(The TPU in this post is a hard formulation whereas the TPU in adidas boost™ is resilient cushion.)

Strategically placed carbon rubber patches under the big-toe and lateral (outside) heel greatly increase the outsole durability for heel strikes and toe-offs, while segmented crystalized rubber provides excellent grip in the rest of the outside.

Though undergoing a significant design change Hurricane’s upper is still soft, snug, and supportive.

The latest upper is now called FORMFIT, a change from the ISOFIT design in the last five Hurricanes; the biggest difference is the lacing system.

Rather than running through four segments of upper that reach over a wide tongue sleeve that wraps the foot, the new upper has traditional looking lace holes with two small mostly cosmetic notches on each side that reminisce to the past design.

Overall the new upper maintains the structured comfort, plush heel collar, and meshed tongue that is connected to a sleeve.

This inner layer reaches down below the sockliner and is stitched to the base of the upper and cloth membrane covering the midsole.

Speaking of the sockliner, Hurricane 22 has an extra 3 mm. piece of padding between the sockliner and midsole. I’ve only seen this before in the Hurricane ISOFIT series. No wonder it feels so nice underfoot for long runs!

The posterior maintains a solid heel counter with plush padding inside… and out. Soft design segments create an appealing 3D look to the back half of the shoe but also trap heat.

This is one feature Saucony could cut to drop weight and aid breathability.

Support strips running vertically after the second lace holes (from the front) work together with medial midsole posting to resist twisting throughout footstrike.

One thick layer of mesh with multiple slits cut for breathability, extends from the strips to complete the forefoot; an inch-high bumper around the tip of the shoe creates a little space for toes.

Arch height is medium. The fit is medium from heel into midfoot and medium to narrow in the forefoot; fit is true to size.

Saucony Hurricane 22 Conclusion

Saucony Hurricane 22 - Sole

Saucony Hurricane 22 – Sole

I enjoy running in the Hurricane 22. The ample cushion, plush feel, and stable ride make it a top pick for my easy-paced long runs, but I’ll go with ASICS GT-2000, adidas Adizero Tempo 9, Brooks Transcend, or Nike Odyssey React next time race-paced miles are part of the long run.

Choose Hurricane for a comfortable, smooth, supported trek through your next big race or weekly recovery runs. Given the high cost, I find it best for committed runners.
