Who should buy the Asics Gel Kayano 31 ?

This is ideal for a runner who is looking for a premium stability trainer that is tried and true, while built for miles

Who should not buy the Asics Gel Kayano 31 ?

The Kayano would not be for someone who is looking for a lighter weight stability trainer

Asics Gel Kayano 31 Introduction

Picture of ASICS Gel Kayano 31

Few trainers have been around as long as the ASICS Kayano. This year brings the 31st edition of ASICS flagship stability trainer. Last year saw a complete overhaul of the midsole unit. For this edition they have made small changes to the overhaul from last year.

The ASICS stability lineup consists of 3 offerings. The GT-1000, GT-2000, and the Kayano. These correspond to the amount of cushioning, with mid, moderate and max.

The Kayano competes with the Brooks Glycerin GTS, Hoka Gaviota, and Saucony Tempus. They retail for $165.

Asics Gel Kayano 31 First Impressions

Upon opening them my eyes widened instantly, they popped with color along with a sleek design similar to those of last year.

The midsole which transitions from white to orange to red was one of my favorite aspects of the colorway. The blue upper has a sheen to it. The accents of peach, orange and red throughout the upper were a nice touch. The shape was very similar to the 30th.

Picture of ASICS Gel Kayano 31

The initial reaction slipping them on for the first time was the plushness I felt with a layer of responsiveness underneath. It was similar to the 30th edition with slightly more responsiveness. The base is noticeably wider as well. This continued the trend of having the Kayano being a bigger trainer.

The maiden voyage of the Kayano 30 was a 5k. The overall comfort continues with this edition. The Kayano is a big shoe and it took some distance getting adjusted to them. The two things that stood out to me on my first run were the wide base of the Kayano and the fit of the new upper. Overall, it was a comfortable first run.

Asics Gel Kayano 31 Upper

Picture of ASICS Gel Kayano 31

The upper has undergone an update in terms of the mesh used. It is a newly engineered mesh, designed to be more breathable and adaptable. It feels similar to last year with one difference, it has a bit more stretch to it. It seems to be made with a small amount of neoprene. The material has a sheen to it causing it to shimmer out in the sun.

The material provides a medium amount of structure along with a greater amount of adaptability. It molds to your feet over time. The structure from the mesh creates a secure fit. This is important because a secure fit aids in the overall stability of the trainer. This continues the comfort felt throughout the shoe. There were no points of irritation throughout the upper.

Picture of ASICS Gel Kayano 31

One improvement of the new mesh is breathability. It is a noticeable improvement in that department compared to the last edition. This was important with the trainer being worn and reviewed in the summer.

The heel portion of the Kayano 31 improved my view of an already ideal design. It starts with an internal heel counter securing you in place. The heel collar has a layer of neoprene around it, along with a knit heel tab which stretches as you put the Kayano on. Added to the heel counter was a medium amount of cushioning which added comfort.

Both the tongue’s length and cushioning added to this. The tongue is also gusseted, preventing it from sliding around.

Asics Gel Kayano 31 Sole Unit

Picture of ASICS Gel Kayano 31

Let’s start from the ground up. Hybrid ASICSGRIP makes its first appearance on the outsole of the Kayano 31. This material increased the durability along with the traction. Some areas have a thinner layer of this while others have a thicker layer of it. It is thinner than the AHAR used in the past but doesn’t sacrifice performance.

At the heart of the Gel-Kayano 31 is its Flytefoam Blast + and the Ecofoam midsole, which combine cushioning and responsiveness. They have used the same 3D construction and the same materials causing the ride to feel similar to the ride of the 30th edition. This use of materials, along with how it is built makes it more eco friendly.
Additionally, rearfoot GEL cushioning absorbs shock during impact and toe-off phases, enhancing comfort over varying distances. The stack is tall, 40 mm, with a 10 mm drop.

The 4D Guidance System makes its second appearance in the Kayano. It is made up of 4 components. Wider basenets are found on the bottom of the shoe. This gives the Kayano a wide platform, which is inherently more stable. In the arch area you will find a new medial post which is softer than previous medial posts. It engages when you need it to.

Picture of ASICS Gel Kayano 31

The midsole is sculpted, to provide ample shock absorption and energy return. The last piece is an increased heel bevel, aiding in controlling the impact.

Last year I said “These 4 aspects of the guidance system create a symphony while you run in the Kayanos providing comfort with every stride and stability when you need it.” about the 30th edition and the same would apply for the 31st edition. The 4D Guidance System is the strength of the midsole.

Asics Gel Kayano 31 Conclusions

Picture of ASICS Gel Kayano 31

ASICS Kayano is continuing their third decade in a big way, noticeable improvements to the complete overhaul from last year. There weren’t many changes, but the ones made improved an already fantastic trainer.

The midsole of the Gel-Kayano 31 is where this shoe truly shines. Featuring ASICS’ signature FlyteFoam Blast + and Ecofoam technology, it offers exceptional cushioning without compromising on responsiveness. The FlyteFoam material strikes a perfect balance between softness and durability, providing a plush feel that absorbs impact effectively mile after mile.

The 4D Guidance System continues to be a strength of the Kayano. It creates a symphony while you run in the Kayanos providing comfort with every stride and stability when you need it. My only drawback is the size of the shoe. It is big and feels big at times. This shoe would be ideal for long distance training.

Picture of ASICS Gel Kayano 31

The new engineered mesh improves the upper of the Kayano. It excels at both breathability and adaptability. The neoprene like feel and added layer to the heel collar and heel tab are small but noticeable improvements. It is a comfortable upper which complements the midsole.

Last year I wrote the evolution of the Kayano was complete but I spoke too soon because the 31st edition furthers the evolution.

They completely rebuilt the Kayano last year while making small but important changes to it this year. It can feel big at times, but also be one of the most stable and comfortable stability trainers out there.

Overall, the ASICS Gel-Kayano 31 is a solid choice for runners seeking stability and comfort without sacrificing performance. Its supportive midsole, adaptive upper, and durable outsole combine to offer a reliable platform for long-distance training.

Its versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of runners looking to prioritize comfort and stability in their trainer.

Whether you’re training for a marathon or enjoying your daily run, the Gel-Kayano 31 proves to be a leader in the stability field.

Just tried these on at Fleet Feet yesterday and have mixed feelings. Love how premium the new mesh feels, but man, my feet were cooking after just walking around the store. Think they went overboard with the stability features – my slight overpronation doesn’t need all that correction. My GT-2000s are simpler but get the job done just fine.

Just tried these on at Fleet Feet – gotta say the upper feels way better than my old 30s. But man, $170? That’s a big ask when my Saucony Guides do the job for less. Might hang tight for the seasonal sales. Anyone else feeling the price pinch on these?

I’ve been running in the Kayano series for over 5 years, and the 31 is a solid evolution. Put about 200 miles on these so far, primarily for my long runs (12-15 miles) and recovery days. The 4D Guidance System really shines on those latter miles when form starts to break down. Compared to the 30, the upper feels more premium and breathable. The stability features work well for my slight overpronation – much better than the Brooks Adrenaline GTS I tried. While they do feel a bit bulky during speedwork, that’s not really their intended purpose. Used these for a recent half marathon and had zero issues. The cushioning sweet spot between responsiveness and plushness is perfect for long distances.

About to pull the trigger on these for my overpronation issues. Currently in Adrenaline GTS size 10.5 but heard ASICS fits weird. Anyone made the switch? Really need something solid for my upcoming half marathon training – the Structure 25s I tried weren’t cutting it for longer runs.

Popped into my local running store yesterday to check out the new Kayanos – been running in these since version 25! The upper definitely feels more premium than my 30s, but they’re still pretty chunky compared to newer stability shoes like the GTS. Think I’ll keep logging miles in my 30s until these hit the sale rack. Still love that classic Kayano feel though!

Just checked these out at Fleet Feet yesterday – gotta say, that new mesh feels way nicer than the 30s. But man, $170 is steep when the Saucony Guide does pretty much the same job. Think I’ll hang tight for a sale before pulling the trigger.

My trusty Adrenalines are about done and thinking about trying these Kayanos. Any other overpronators made the switch? Need something solid for those weekend long runs. Also, do they fit similar to Brooks? Don’t have an ASICS store nearby to try them on.

As someone who’s run in every Kayano since the 26, I can say the 31 is the best version yet. The 4D Guidance System provides excellent stability without feeling intrusive. I’ve completed two 20-mile training runs and numerous daily runs, and the cushioning remains consistent. The new engineered mesh is more breathable than previous versions while maintaining support. Compared to the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 23, these offer better energy return. They do feel slightly bulky during faster sessions, but that’s expected for a stability shoe. For easy and long runs, they’re perfect. 9/10 for stability and comfort.

After putting 200+ miles on the Kayano 31, I can confidently say it’s a worthy upgrade from the 30. The new 4D Guidance System provides exceptional stability – I noticed this especially during my recent marathon training. The engineered mesh upper feels more premium and breathable compared to previous versions. While it does feel bulkier than the Saucony Guide 16 I was using before, the plush cushioning makes up for it on long runs. I’ve used these for everything from easy 5-milers to a recent 20-mile training run. The durability has been impressive so far with minimal wear. For stability runners looking for a workhorse trainer, this is a solid choice.

Hey runners! Training for my first marathon and eyeing the new Kayano 31. Anyone know if they run true to size? I’m in the Kayano 29 now but heard the fit’s different. Got pretty high arches and my current pair isn’t cutting it for these long training runs. Would love some real-world feedback before dropping the cash!

Still running in my Kayano 29s and they’re getting up there in miles. Anyone made the jump from 29 to 31? Really curious if they changed the stability features – my ankles need that support. Also wondering if they finally managed to trim some weight?

After putting 200+ miles on the Gel Kayano 31, I can confidently say this is one of ASICS’ best stability shoes yet. The 4D Guidance System provides exceptional support during my long runs, especially noticeable during the latter miles of my recent marathon training. The engineered mesh upper is a significant improvement over the 30, offering better breathability while maintaining that locked-down feel. Compared to the Brooks Adrenaline GTS, the Kayano 31 feels more premium and responsive. My only minor gripe is the bulkiness – they feel a bit heavy during speedwork. But for long runs and recovery days, these are my go-to shoes. I’ve found them particularly effective on 15+ mile runs where stability becomes crucial.

After putting 300 miles on my Kayano 31s, I can confidently say these are the best iteration yet. The 4D Guidance System provides noticeable stability without feeling intrusive – perfect for my mild overpronation during marathon training. I’ve used these for everything from recovery runs to 20-milers, and the cushioning holds up remarkably well. The new engineered mesh is a major improvement over the 30, offering better breathability while maintaining support. Compared to my previous Brooks Adrenaline GTS 22, these feel more premium and protective during long runs. The only downside is the weight – you definitely notice it during faster segments. But for stability and comfort over long distances, these are outstanding. Recently completed the Chicago Marathon in them with zero issues.

Coming from the Kayano 30, I’ve logged 200+ miles in the 31 and the improvements are notable. The 4D Guidance System provides exceptional stability – I felt completely supported during my recent marathon training block. The new engineered mesh breathes better than the previous version while maintaining that signature Kayano comfort. Though they feel bulky on faster days, they excel at easy and long runs. I recently completed a 3:45 marathon in these with zero stability issues. The cushioning still feels fresh after high mileage. While pricey, they’re worth it for runners needing premium stability.

My old stability shoes are toast and I’m debating getting the Kayano 31. Any other overpronators tried both these and the Structure 25 or Guide 16? I hit about 50 miles a week so really need something that’ll last.

Hey runners! My trusty Adrenalines are about done and I’m eyeing the new Kayanos. Always heard they’re a bit clunky though – anyone switched from Adrenaline to these? My local store doesn’t have them in stock yet. Really need something that’ll hold up for Chicago Marathon training this summer, but worried about the toe box since I’ve got wider feet. Anyone else using these for serious marathon training?

Been a Kayano fan since the 29s and finally checked these out today. Love how they tweaked the support – way less clunky but still keeps my pronation in check. New upper feels super breezy too. Only thing holding me back is that price tag… might wait for a sale since my 29s still have some life in them.

Anyone using these for mixed terrain? My usual route has about 2 miles of packed trails between road sections, and I’m tired of switching shoes. Also dealing with some puddles on rainy days – do they handle wet conditions okay?

As someone who has run in every Kayano since the 26, the 31 is a significant improvement. The 4D Guidance System provides noticeably better stability during my longer runs, especially when fatigue sets in. I’ve put about 300 miles on these through a mix of easy runs and marathon training. The new engineered mesh is much more breathable than previous versions while maintaining the classic Kayano support. Used these for a recent marathon and had none of the usual stability issues in the later miles. While they are on the heavier side, the comfort and support make up for it. A solid evolution of the stability trainer category.

The Kayano 31 continues ASICS’ tradition of reliable stability shoes with some welcome updates. I’ve logged 175 miles in these over the past 2 months, using them primarily for easy and long runs. The 4D Guidance System provides noticeable support without feeling intrusive – much more natural than the Kayano 30. The new engineered mesh breathes better while maintaining structure. Recently completed an 18-mile training run and the cushioning felt consistent throughout. They’re not light at 11.2 oz for my size 10, but that’s expected for a premium stability shoe. Compared to the Brooks Glycerin GTS, these feel more supportive but slightly less plush. The durability has been excellent – minimal outsole wear so far. While they feel a bit bulky for faster days, they excel as a dedicated easy/long run shoe.

Really loving the updates to the Kayano 31 after about 150 miles in them. The stability feels way better than the 30s, especially on those long Sunday slogs. The mesh is pretty sweet – my feet stayed comfy even during an 18-miler last weekend when they usually get pretty swollen. Yeah, they’re a bit chunky compared to my Rides, but that cushioning is heaven on tired legs. Been using these for my easy runs and long runs, cruising at 8:30-9:00 pace. Holding up like a champ too – barely any wear on the bottom. Only real drawbacks are the weight and that hefty price tag.

I’ve been running in Kayanos for the past decade and this is possibly the best version yet. Put 300+ miles on these including two 20-mile training runs for my upcoming marathon. The 4D Guidance System provides excellent stability without feeling intrusive. The new engineered mesh is a huge improvement over the 30 – much more breathable on humid days. Compared to the Brooks Glycerin GTS, the Kayano 31 feels more premium and stable. The FortyFive midsole foam hits a sweet spot between cushioning and responsiveness. While it’s not the lightest stability shoe, the smooth ride makes up for it. Perfect for long training runs and recovery days.

I was excited to try the Kayano 31, but honestly, I found the tongue uncomfortable during interval runs. The overall stability is great, but the breaking-in period was longer than I expected.

I have to say, I’m impressed with the improvements Asics made in the Kayano 31. The overall cushion is just the right balance—not too soft, but still very supportive. It definitely feels lighter than the 28. My only gripe is with the fit around the toe box, which feels a bit snug for me even after breaking them in.
