Asics GEL Kayano 18 First Impressions

If Asics plays it safe with the GT series, then the Kayano series is where they roll the dice. It seems like this shoe gets a major change nearly every year. Off set lacing, giant GEL heel packs, Heel Clutching System, oh my! My test pair arrived in a stunningly sinister silver and black color way. I couldn’t wait to run in them.

Asics GEL Kayano 18 Upper

Theo Comfort was order of the day when Asics built the GEL Kayano 18. All materials found in the GEL Kayano 18 upper are high end. Asics uses very breathable and noticeably soft mesh combined with premium overlay material to provide runners with a truly luxurious upper fit.

The GEL Kayano 18 gets Asics Biomorphic fit materials in the arch and forefoot flex points. This material will not bunch, pinch or grab a runners foot and is only found on Asics top shelf shoes. The lacing pattern is still slightly offset but not to the degree found in earlier versions of the shoe.

Asics has decided to remove the internal heel counter and replace it with an external “exoskeleton” design. As a result, the shoe feels like it has almost no heel counter at all. Inside the heel pocket we find Asics PHF (Personalized Heel Fit) memory foam. Initially, I felt some slippage in the GEL Kayano 18 heel, probably because Asics uses a very slippery heel collar lining that slides when you wear technical socks. At any rate, the slipping feeling didn’t last long.

Ruggero I think “luxury” is a good way to describe the feeling of the Kayano 18 upper. Just picking the shoe up in your hands you can feel the smoothness and softness of the memory foam used in the tongue and the heel collar. The shoe fits great: I didn’t have any problem with the heel slippage and I couldn’t feel any pinch or itch at any point. The upper unit of the Kayano is truly amazing.

I have very flat feet and I felt very comfortable in the Kayano’s upper. I also want to say that my pair came in the white/orange colour in the pictures and I prefer it to the dark colour that Theo run in

Asics GEL Kayano 18 Sole Unit

Theo Asics has implemented a new type of midsole posting called Dynamic Duomax which Asics claims responds better to the needs of the runner. For the first time ever, Duomax Soft Top is in place in both men’s and women’s versions of the shoe. Duomax Soft Top enhances the cushioning properties of the GEL Kayano 18. Asics uses its legendary GEL cushioning system in heel and forefoot areas of the GEL Kayano 18 to provide the plushest running experience ever in the GEL Kayano franchise.

Asics Space Trusstic System shores up the mid foot of the shoe and works to relieve some of the torsional forces that running places on a shoe’s midsole. Lastly, Asics has also included a Guidance Line design which carves a channel on the sole of the shoe to help guide the foot through initial contact to toe off.

Ruggero I was also surprised of the amount of plush cushioning delivered by the Kayano, especially in the forefoot – which is a good thing if like me you tend to land on your midfoot. I was expecting a little more support, though.

Asics GEL Kayano 18 Opinion

Theo The GEL Kayano 18 is certainly a premium shoe but after a couple of runs I knew that it was not for me. Not only that, but I feel that the GEL Kayano 18 is completely miscategorized. To me, the shoe feels a whole lot closer to a neutral shoe than a shoe designed for moderate over pronators. When running in the GEL Kayano 18, my feet literally felt as though they were diving inwards with very little to help slow my pronation. For the record, I’m six feet tall and 160 pounds on a heavy day. The GEL Kayano 18 simply could not keep up with what my feet need from a shoe.

However, The GEL Kayano 18 looks incredible in the silver and black color way I received and it is extremely comfortable and well cushioned. It transitioned reasonably well for a shoe with so much shock absorption.

Kayano series fans will likely be split over the direction the shoe has taken. More neutral runners could very well love it while those of us who need more help from our shoes will be forced to look elsewhere.

In fact, I recently tested the Asics GT 2170 and found it to be much more stable and provide considerably more arch support than found in the GEL Kayano 18. As such, I’m recommending this latest Kayano to neutral to mildly over pronating runners who are looking for a long run shoe with the slightest touch of support.

Ruggero I am a heavier runner than Theo (85kg -> 185 pounds) and while I did feel the support of the Kayano 18, I need to agree that is indeed less than what I was expecting to find. I didn’t find my arches collapsing too much, but what I felt was the super-soft cushioning. After a couple of 7/8km runs and two 12km runs I didn’t feel any ankle pain – which usually means that I overpronated a lot during my run – so there is definitely support, but landing on so much cushion makes the foot a little unstable, or at least it feels like it.

All in all the Kayano is a great shoe and I also would reccomend it to larger runners that are looking for a high-mileage (marathon training) shoe that offers soft soft cushioning and a touch of overpronating control.

What’s old is new again with the Asics GT 2170. Being that the 2170 is a core shoe for Asics, I didn’t expect a drastic overhaul for the 2170 and I was pretty much right. The heel looks a little different on the 2170 and it is truly a pleasant shoe when you first try it on. The 2150 was the last GT series shoe that I ran in and it too was a fine shoe. The 2170 continues to offer high end cushioning and moderate stability combined with a fit and function that thousands of runners call home.

Asics GT 2170 Upper:

Asics continues to play it safe with the 2170 upper. And why not? It’s a well designed unit consisting of very breathable mesh and supportive, yet soft, overlays. I did notice that the eyelet row has been segmented a bit in order to help the upper conform to the foot in motion. Most notable to me is the Asics PHF (Personalized Heel Fit) design which provides a very plush and comfortable heel fit. The heel counter is quite rigid as it should be in a stability shoe. The collar height is very low and provides a good fit. At first, I felt like I was slipping a touch in the heel area but that sensation soon abated. Asics uses a very slick, finely woven material inside their shoes and when combined with technical socks the heel fit can slide a little for the first couple of runs.

Asics GT 2170 Sole Unit:

As in the upper, Asics has made few sweeping changes to the 2170. GT series fans will still find the same Duomax medial posting, SoLyte midsole foam and Impact Guidance System (IGS). Also included is a substantial Space Trusstic mid foot shank which helps control the torsional forces created by an over pronating foot. Asics relatively new Guidance Line design is also here. Guidance Line carves out a path in the midsole to help the foot travel as neutrally through foot strike as possible. Asics did decide to place more GEL cushioning in the heel area of the 2170. In fact, the GT series has never had this much GEL before.

Asics GT 2170 Opinion:

I truly enjoyed my time in the Asics GT 2170. I took them on both treadmill and asphalt runs and they performed quite reliably and as expected. The GT 2170 has several features that I demand in a stability shoe. First, I must have a shoe with substantial arch support and the 2170 did well in this regard. I’m a light runner but my feet are very flexible and my feet and posterior tibial tendons will quickly tell me if a shoe is weak in the arch. The GT 2170 was adequate in this regard but there were times that I felt a few twinges that tell me I probably would be better off in a shoe with a touch more arch.

The GT 2170 excels at cushioning. The shoe does a superb job of insulating the runner from the road. However, this comes with a trade off in transition. Compared to some other shoes I’ve recently tested, the GT 2170 felt a bit slow and cumbersome when the pace quickened. It is also heavier than many competitors shoes in this category. I weigh every shoe that I test on my kitchen scale and I was surprised to see a 12 ounce weight for this shoe. Overall though, the shoe is well built and the design, even if a little dated, is undeniably successful.

I can’t see any reason why fans of this series will be disappointed in the new GT 2170.

The 33 collection is Asics first foray in ligther and less constructed high mileage running shoes. The running industry has been waiting for a while to see what Asics’ response would have been to the recent minimalistic wave that shook the industry.

I had the chance to meet and question some of the Asics footwear team and listen first hand to what the company’s take is on the subject.

The first thing they mentioned was that Asics is a company who bases their products on science and not on market trends and so, even if it would have been easy enough for them to build a zero drop shoe in a lightweight package and market it, they stuck to their studies of the thousands of runners who have their gaits and biomechanics assessed in their flagship stores around the world, their pro athletes and testers.

Further, they recognize there are some advantages in pairing some lightweight, flexible and deconstructed shoes to a runner’s main high-mileage shoe and they believe that there are some runners who benefit from barefoot running. But based on their analysis and their long history and knowledge – they say that the percentage is much lower than the barefoot running enthusiasts seem to advocate.

Long story short here comes the Asics Gel Excel 33, flagship shoe in the new 33 collection.

Asics Gel Excel33 First Impression

First impressions were that the shoes were very light , flexible and uncomplicated looking… The shoes were instantly comfortable, so I took them on a 21 km run straight from the box.

Asics Gel Excel33 Sole Unit

The midsole of the Excel 33 is lower than usual Asics shoes. The Excel 33 has a 10mm heel drop (height difference between heel and forefoot) which Asics believes to be the best biomechanical position, reducing the load on the Achilles tendon, calf muscles and hamstring.

The midsole is composed of two different EVA (foam) materials. Right under the foot there is spEVA (Asics softer EVA) for comfort. Under that, the bottom layer is made of SoLyte – a harder foam material that offers better energy return and stability. The logic is that you want a soft material to land on to reduce impact and stress, but at the same time you want a harder material to be in contact with the ground to return your energy (think about running on sand… all your energy gets absorbed by the sand). Between the two are sandwiched visible Gel (cushioning) units bot the in heel and forefoot.

The main performance element that differentiates the Excel 33 from the previously released Asics Gel Blur 33 is the Propulsion Trusstic system: a plastic shank that extends from the arch all the way under the forefoot. By mimicing the action of the foot’s plantar fascia, this element returns the energy accumulated through the gait and propels the foot forward.

Contributing to the natural feeling and added flexibility (and carving out a lot of weight) are deeply carved flex grooves and the presence of the Guidance Line, a vertical groove.

The one color outsole, with minimal lugged grip, was absolutely great for the road. The blown rubber gave a very quiet stride, unlike many shoes where I slap. The durability has not been great, after only 150km the shoes were showing significant wear under the forefoot.

Asics Gel Excel 33 Upper

A great fore part, with tight mesh that was durable and breathable. Once laced the shoe was snug to the foot, felt supportive, but at the same time extremely soft and supple. The collar padding and underfoot was fantastic, you can instantly tell its a quality shoe.

The Excel 33 features the Heel Clutch system: instead of the traditional heel counter, a lighter plastic counter is now outside the shoe to lock your heel in position, while memory foam on the internal lining gives comfort and shapes to your heel.

Asics Gel Excel 33 Ride and Opinion

Immediate impressions on the road was the soft feeling midsole, which created a fantastic smooth ride, and instantly gave you the feeling that you wanted to run faster. The shoes really promoted a feeling that you wanted to get on your toes and pick up the pace. The flexibility was superb in the forefoot, really allowing you to ‘feel’ the ground without ever lacking cushioning.

The mid foot support bridge extends into the forefoot, and really gives a sensation of energy return when you flex the shoe and it snaps back into its original shape, and I am sure this was the main reason why this shoe was so fast feeling.

Over all, a fantastic trainer / racer for the neutral runner that wants a pure road running shoe that’s extremely flexible, super light, yet cushioned enough to put in some serious mileage.

As a follow-up to the popular Kinsei 3, the Kinsei 4 has quite a lot to live up to, and fans of the line will not be disappointed. The Kinsei 4 builds up on the technology found in the Kinsei 3 in a more flexible, lighter package.

Asics uses the Kinsei line to introduce their latest technologies, resulting in a shoe that has an incredibly long list of features, with no element overlooked. With all of the features and add-ons packed in, the Kinsei weighs in a little heavier than the average neutral shoe, though this is something that Asics is working to improve. For the Kinsei 4, Asics managed to shave roughly one ounce off of the overall weight, which is a noticeable advantage over previous models, and adds to the overall performance. In all, the Kinsei 4 is best suited for runners that prefer a cushioned, supportive shoe and who don’t mind a little extra heft.

Asics Kinsei 4 First Impressions

Having heard quite a bit about the Kinsei line, I was eager to give the latest model a try. So eager, in fact, that I pulled them on as soon as they arrived, in the middle of my office. The fit and feel of the Kinsei 4 is fantastic; I felt like the upper hugged my foot just right and my arches felt secure and supportive from the start. After using Asics exclusively for about a year when I began running, I was expecting a solid fit, and I was impressed right away with the fit of the Kinsei 4.

Given my experience with Asics in the past, I decided to take them out for their first test run the next morning, a five-mile route along Central Park’s main loop. My initial impression of the Kinsei 4 was great — they have a smooth ride with plenty of cushioning throughout. While they didn’t have that speedy feeling I’ve grown accustomed to in my daily trainers, my overall comfort over those first few miles made up for it. After about four miles, however, the extra weight (as compared to the other shoes in my rotation) began to show.

Chalking it up to tired legs, I decided to give them another try following a rest day. Unfortunately, the weight of the shoe caught up to me again, and I felt likey were dragging me down on my tempo run. While runners accustomed to slightly heavier shoes won’t notice a difference, those who are used to running in shoes under the 10-ounce mark may have some issues with the weight on long or tempo runs. The Kinsei 4, however, could also be a great option for short recovery runs, when the best parts of the shoe can shine.

Asics Kinsei 4 Sole Unit

The most noticeable element of the sole unit is the discrete Asics GEL Cushioning System in the heel, intended to provide ample protection and comfort for heel strikers. The rear of the sole unit is also helps create a smooth transition through the stride. In fact, the Kinsei 4 provides an incredibly smooth ride, especially when considering the overall rigidity of the sole. Gel cushioning is also on the forefoot.

The sole of the Kinsei 4 also features their Guidance Line: a deeply carved longitudinal (from heel to toe) groove that promotes the right gait by guiding the foot trhoughout its natural center of gravity . Adding to the flexibility of the sole unit is a lower midsole and a new modular pod design in the front of the sole, which consists of rows of small boxes with deep grooves between. These grooves make the forefoot more flexible and at the same time help shedding weight.

While more flexible than in previous incarnations, the sole still provides ample protection from the road and heel strikers need not worry about the Kinsei 4 not providing enough shock absorption.

Asics Kinsei 4 Upper Unit

One of the major changes to the Kinsei 4 can be found in the shoe’s upper. While the Kinsei 3 used a multiple-layer design, the updated version features mesh construction and is a major element of the shoe’s one ounce drop in weight and added flexibility. This added flexibility, paired with a slightly off-centered lacing, makes for a more natural ride and also reduces the risk of chafing and blisters on the top of the foot. Longtime fans of Asics shoes will also notice a wider toe box, also adding to the overall flexibility of the shoe.

As in previous incarnations, the mesh overlay consists of Cuprothermo, a type of mesh which is designed to add to the shoe’s temperature control. Testing the shoe in both the final weeks of summer and the initial chilly weeks of fall in New York, I found that the Kinsei 4 performed well in both cases, keeping my feet cool on warm days in the early fall and holding onto warmth when the weather got colder.

Another distinctive element of the upper is the Clutch Collar, an outer heel counter designed to reduce heel slippage. While I was initially a little wary about this part of the shoe, it actually turned out to be one of my favorite features. Holding the shoe securely across the back of my foot, it added some stability and to the overall feeling of security of the shoe.

Overall, the upper on the Kinsei 4 is great: it’s flexible, manages temperature and moisture well, and wraps the foot nicely without interfering with movement.

Asics Kinsei 4 Opinion

The Kinsei 4 is a shoe packed with technology, and clearly Asics hasn’t left any element of shoe to chance. The result is a shoe that continues to morph as the line progresses, and is definitely for a runner looking for something that spares no expense.

An important consideration about the Kinsei 4 is the price. Coming in at nearly twice the price of some of the most popular shoes on the market today, most runners will expect a superior ride and amazing performance out of the shoe.

Runners seeking a neutral shoe with a little extra support and cushioning could definitely benefit from the Kinsei, but for those looking for something a bit more pared down and lighter, this wouldn’t be the best choice of shoe.

The DS Trainer is marketed as a ligthweight training shoe with added stability. DS stands for “Duo Sole”, a combination of two different outsole material that provide both grip and a feel for the road. The DS series (both Trainer and Racer) is very popular and Asics tried and maintain the aspects that made this shoe a success only adding some details, such as the Heel Clutching System, the introduction of the Guidance Line and some weigth-shaving solutions.

Asics DS Trainer 16 First Impressions

I know I will say this more than once, but the first impression for me had to come from that great racing red colour. Shallow? Yes and no: I am a believer that the aesthetical aspect of a running shoe is important too and the DS Trainer in this colour really stands out from the crowd.

The second aspect that impressed me once taken the shoe out of the box was the weight: I use a lot of different stablity shoes and the DS Trainer felt quite light for a shoe that I plan to use in 10 and 15 mile training runs.

It was question of minutes before I laced them up and launched in my first 10km test run.

Asics DS Trainer 16 Midsole Unit

The midsole of the Trainer 16 is made of Asics’ Solyte foam in two different densities: harder in the heel and softer on the forefoot. This is the first thing I noticed during my first test run: the forefoot is amazingly flexible – but more on this later.

The main contributors of the stability and pronation control aspects of the sole unit are the medial post – the insertion of a harder piece of foam in the medial (internal) side of the midsole that runs from right under the heel up until the ball of the foot – and the use of the Space Trusstic System – a piece of thermoplastic that is placed right under the arch and controls the torsion of the sole unit.

On top of the Space Trusstic, Asics placed a Propulsion Trusstic, another piece of plastic that flexes during the gait and returns to its original position “snapping” right during toe-off.

Asics DS Trainer 16 Outsole

New introduction for the DS 16 is the Guidance Line, a vertically carved flex groove that is supposed to enhance your natural gait, favouring the correct alignment of your foot’s center of gravity during the whole phase.

The flex grooves (carves) in the outsole are not very deep nor that many, but they are aggressively placed – encouraging a fast toe off.

Asics DS Trainer 16 Upper Unit

In my opinion, the upper fit of the DS Trainer is where this shoe really shines.

The toebox is wide (my only complaint about the shoe: a little too wide for my foot) and open. There is virtually no overlay and it feels sock-like.

A stretch material (silver with red dots in the pictures) is inserted among the mesh and expands when your foot does to further prevent irritation.

Asymmetrical lacing: I love it. I hate when I can feel the laces of a shoe on the top of my foot. Run enough miles in a shoe and you will hate it too. Usually I prefer shoes with very padded tongues, as that helps to “hide” the laces feeling. But the asymmetrical lacing is just pure genius. The laces don’t sit on the middle of your foot, but actually follow the shape of your metatarsal bone. Even with a very thin tongue as the one on the DS Trainer, I can’t feel the laces on top of my foot and that really feels great.

Last, the Heel Clutching System. This is basically a different heel construction. A plastic cage is on the outside of the shoe (as opposed to inside the heel as in the majority of running shoes) and it’s slightly more than a thin line of plastic. This gets tensed by the lacing of your laces (the last two holes are connected to this element) and “traps” your heel safely in position. Don’t worry, there’s memory foam on the inside to keep it soft and comfortable.

Asics DS Trainer 16 Opinion

There are some of the technical aspects of the DS Trainer that you notice (the asymetrical laces, the heel clutching system, the flexible forefoot) and some that you don’t (the Guidance Line) but it doesn’t matter: whatever it is that contributes to the overall feeling, it works.

The ride is fast. The forefoot is amazingly flexible for a stability trainer, and you will notice that right away. The weigth of the shoe is closer to 10.5 oz than Asics’ advertised 10, but in a running shoe weigth is as much a feeling as it is a number on the scale. The DS 16 feels light, open, breathable… it feels almost like a racing shoe – but it does feel supportive !

It has become my go-to shoe for 10 km runs.

Asics always seems to be the company that sticks to its guns the longest when creating, or recreating, models of their running shoes. Any runner trying the ever popular DS-trainer or 2100 series can basically find the same shoe from year to year, only having to stomach aesthetic changes to their favorite workhorse trainer. However, this time Asics breaks the mold to create a refreshing and responsive shoe without many bells and whistles. The Marketing for the Blur 33 included the descriptor that it was a “minimalist shoe”, and while the Blur 33 does not live up to that moniker it will appeal to a broader audience looking to move in that direction.

Asics Gel Blur 33 First Impressions

The Blur 33 may strike some as Asics version of the Nike free due to the segmented and highly flexible outsole. This is simply not true, and the feel of the Blur 33 is a fully realized trainer stripped down to allow greater flexibility in the mid foot, a lower heel drop (10mm), and surprisingly soft and responsive cushioning. While there are days that I wish I could strap on a racing flat and hammer out a long tempo run, the carnage to my body would simply be too great. The Blur 33 is a shoe that gives me the free and flexible sensation of wearing a minimalist shoe with the protection of a neutral daily trainer.

Asics Gel Blur 33 Upper Design

The Blur 33 uses an open mesh design that is highly breathable with supportive underlays, something which is becoming the industry standard for most shoe companies. Overlays are kept to a minimum outside of the supportive Asics logo which hugs the mid foot area securely but not too tightly. The heel collar of the shoe uses memory foam designed to maintain the shape of one’s heel and provide a form fit. The toe box of the Blur 33 is wide, typical of Asics accommodating fit, and allows plenty of room for toe splay.

One complaint that I have about the Blur 33 is the seemingly plush, yet ineffective, cushioning throughout the tongue of the shoe. Asics uses fat oval shaped laces which are far too short to double knot. The combination of these laces and poor tongue cushioning led to some metatarsal discomfort when lacing the shoes, and I often had to stop and retie them to alleviate pain. Once I found the correct about of tension they never needed to be readjusted.

Asics Gel Blur 33 Midsole

Solyte, Asics soft and responsive EVA cushioning material, runs throughout the midsole of the Blur 33 providing a responsive and springy feel. A gel cushioning pod is located in the heel but what I found pleasing about the Blur 33 is how well is accommodates forefoot and mid foot strikers just as well as those prone to heel strike. The Blur 33 does not have any motion control devices within the midsole and those runners needed additional support should steer clear of this shoe. Neutral runners and supinators will delight in how simple and unconstrictive this shoe feels, allowing the foot to move freely and functionally.

Asics Gel Blur 33 Outsole

The segmented nature of the Blur 33 makes it the most flexible Asics trainer in their line. This segmentation is hardly noticeable during runs and doesn’t effect the transition from the heel to toe of the shoe during the runner’s gait. Noticeable absent is the Trusstic System, a thermoplastic device placed in the mid foot area of most Asics shoes which greatly reduces flexibility. A new version of the Trusstic System will be implemented in newer models of the 33 line, such as the Excel 33 and Hyper 33 to be released shortly.

Looking at the shoes outsole one can clearly see how deep the flex grooves are and can notive the Guidance Line, a carved vertical flex groove that extends from the heel to the toe, allowing the foot to align to its most efficient gait and forgiving some of the runner’s mistakes.

Asics Gel Blur 33 Overall Impression

Asics departed from the norm with the production of the Blur 33 and I think they have found a simple, yet elegant design. I will call this shoe “pseudo-minimalist” as it has a lower heel drop (10mm verses Asics typical 12mm), a flexible feel due to the segmented outsole, and soft responsive cushioning without extraneous motion control devices. Having put approximately 100 miles on these shoes I have not experienced any durability issues and I imagine that these shoes would hold up fine for 500 miles of normal wear.

Asics complimented this shoe with a modest price tag that won’t break the bank of some blue collar mileage hogs. Furthermore, with aesthetics that are reminiscent of Asics trainers from the early 1980s, the Blur 33 is a simple pleasure to wear on your next run.

Asics changed very little with the Cumulus 13 and those familiar with the shoe will appreciate Asics philosophy of not fixing what isn’t broken. Fewer overlays give the Cumulus 13 a more breathable feel and a “guidance line” was added to aid in transitioning through the foot strike. Overall, this is exactly what you would expect from a shoe that has become an industry standard for great cushioning, durability, and a competitive price.

Asics Gel Cumulus 13 Upper Design

The Cumulus 13 upper features soft and pliable, dual density mesh with a few less overlays than what you have come to expect from an Asics shoe. Every part of this upper feels functional and the fit is sock like around the foot while still providing some wiggle room for those runners with higher volume feet. The tongue and heel collar of the shoe are made of soft moisture wicking mesh which did not rub anywhere. The heel cup of the Cumulus uses memory foam and molds to your heel after a few runs. I didn’t experience any slipping during any runs and the fit of the Cumulus has improved with more wear. A fairly standard lacing system is complemented nicely by thinner than normal oval laces which stayed tied throughout each run without having to double knot them. Kudos to Asics for thinning the now industry standard oval laces down a bit and making them more functional.

Asics Gel Cumulus 13 Midsole

Asics created a very well cushioned shoe in the Cumulus, using Gel units in both the heel and the forefoot which are visible on the shoe. With winter approaching it is important to have a cushioning technology which maintains it’s softness and does not freeze up in cold temperatures. Asics Gel cushioning really keeps it’s properties and doesn’t seem to compress or freeze as other brands do. The Gel is made from a silicone rubber compound which maintains it’s properties down to -55F!

The Gel cushioning is bolstered by Solyte EVA foam cushioning which gives the shoe a molded feel to your foot. The best way to describe the Cumulus cushioning is soft, but firm. Support in the midsole comes by way of a thermal plastic unit in the midfoot which reduces lateral movement and torsion throughout footstrike. Due to this, the Cumulus is not an especially flexible shoe. Asics tried to increase the forefoot flexibility in the Cumulus 13 by deepening the groves in the sole of the forefoot ever so slightly. Still, the Cumulus is not for a runner looking for a minimal, low to the ground, flexible feel. One aspect of this shoe I was quite surprised about was it’s feeling of a great deal of stability. The Cumulus 13 is built on a Strobel last which lends stability and durability to the shoe. A mild overpronator would have no problems in this shoe as the trusstic system in the shoe really provides a good deal of medial support.

The Cumulus has a 12mm heel-toe drop with a midsole which is quite a bit higher than average. Runners who enjoy maximum shock absorption will revel in the Cumulus’ ability to stay responsive for many miles.

Asics cut down weight using a compartmentalized outsole with is both durable and effective. I remember when the Cumulus weighed nearly 13 ounces and each version of this shoe gets lighter. I was able to run on gravel without picking up rocks and having run over 40 miles in this shoe there is really no wear on the sole. Tough carbon rubber lines the outsole of the shoe.

Asics Gel Cumulus 13 Overall Impression

The bottom line is you can’t go wrong with a shoe like the Asics Cumulus. Great cushioning, fairly lightweight, and an extremely durable ride make it the training shoe of choice for American marathon record holder Ryan Hall, who chooses this model over the higher end Nimbus, Kinsei, or Kayano. If you’re looking for a high mileage trainer that you can get 500 miles out of then look no further. Another great aspects about Asics is that once you find a model you like you can stick with that model for many incarnations because Asics seems to change little from year to year, something which I’ve found most runners find appealing.

Asics Gel Nimbus 13 - Pair

• Asics Gel Nimbus 13 General Info:

The GEL Nimbus series is among Asics’ most popular offerings. The latest incarnation seeks to reduce weight while still providing maximal cushioning throughout the shoe. Overall, the Nimbus 13 provides a conservative reboot of the model, offering few major overhauls in favor of minor tweaking. The GEL heel cushioning system, along with the guidance line and trussic system, aims to guide foot gait. Overall, the newest iteration should feel familiar towearers of earlier versions of the shoe—the principle difference being weight reduction. For newcomers, the shoe is a good option for runners who need extensive cushioning, are heel strikers, or wish to diminish the impact of the road on joints while running.

Asics Gel Nimbus 13 - Heel

In order to reduce weight, the Nimbus 13 features newer, lighter materials which seek to provide the same amount of cushioning and support as those foundin previous models—all while boasting less bulk and weight. The heel crash padon the new model is composed of a lighter, high-carbon rubber which provides ample heel support while reducing heft. As a result of these efforts, the shoe shed three-quarters of an ounce in its latest version, which helps legs stay fresh.

• Asics Gel Nimbus 13 First Impressions:

First and foremost, I must admit that I tend to run in lighter shoes. As a result, the shoes took some getting used to for the first few miles. As I became better-acquainted with them, however, I noticed many strong points within the model, and began to understand their popularity. The cushioning in the heel would provide sturdy, unobtrusive protection for heel strikers, and the mild corrective features could help provide support for runners with slight pronation issues. Heavier runners or runners with a history of injury would also find the shoes to provide a great amount of support to keep joints from bearing the shock of road and trail running, as there is ample cushioning from top to bottom.

Asics Gel Nimbus 13 - Medial View

At times, the shoe admittedly began feeling heavy — particularly at the end of long runs. This is an important consideration for potential purchasers, as any shoe of this nature will run the same risk of feeling weighty during long workouts. Put simply—this is a symptom of a corrective shoe, and is not a detriment to the Nimbus 13. In order to include the type of features of a more cushioned shoe, one has to live with some additional weight on their feet. Helpful features, such as the great cushioning ,come at a cost — but many runners may find the improvement in movement to beworth the trade-off.

• Asics Gel Nimbus 13 Sole Unit:

The Nimbus 13’s outsole unit features a newly-crafted material, LiteAHAR (Asics High Abrason Rubber), which is a cross-over from the company’s crash pads on other trainer models. The high-abrasion rubber provides great traction, grip, and movement throughout a variety of surfaces. What’s more, the inclusion of the new sole material helps reduce weight — an essential feature this upgrade. Minimizing weight in the sole allows the midsole and upper to absorb the impact while still reducing the general heft of the shoe, which should come as welcome news for under-pronating runners. The outsole provides firm support for runs on various terrains: running on trails was a breeze, as was navigating uneven sidewalks and potholes while running on roads. The sole design provides plenty of grip during wet weather as well, providing firm traction that does not wear down quickly.

• Asics Gel Nimbus 13 Upper Design:

The upper unit of the Nimbus 13 also underwent a weight-loss regimen in its latest iteration, slimming down by five grams. This weight reduction is the result of the fully-revamped heel construction, which removes the internal heelcounter (the portion of the shoe which cradles the heel and reduces pronation issues) by replacing it with a lighter external heel counter system. Cushioning in the forefoot is also improved, creating a comfortable, firm platform for push-off and landing. Additionally, the Nimbus 13 features a synthetic mesh which provides a cushioned, comfortable fit throughout the foot which keeps dry despite the elements. New to this year’s design is the shoes’ asymmetrical lacing design which more accurately follows the pattern of the foot’s skeletal structure. The lacing design helps reduce friction and follows a more naturalpath along the foot, helping create a smooth ride along with the othercushioning elements found throughout the shoe.

• Asics Gel Nimbus 13 Opinion:

Shoe companies always take a gamble when it comes to making alterations to immensely-popular shoe models. The Nimbus line has proven to be a success for the Asics, and any changes could dramatically impact runners’ impressions of the shoe. In the Nimbus 13, Asics has managed to improve on an already-popular design by shedding weight and adding low-key features — all elements which could go unnoticed by most wearers that make a large impact nonetheless. Without making drastic changes, the Nimbus 13 provides a great update to a popular model which should leave current wearers and newcomers to the model satisfied.

As the shoe is designed to feature high-level cushioning, there is some unavoidable weight to the model. While this is greatly improved in the Nimbus 13, shoes of this type always weigh more than their less-supportive counterparts. Wearers of cushioned or supportive shoes will not likely notice any weight concerns, and will more likely find the shoes to be more comfortable than other models due to weight reduction efforts in the latest incarnation of the Nimbus 13. Overall, the Nimbus 13 is a great option for runners who enjoy a soft ride, ample cushioning, and a comfortable fit.

The Asics Evolution 6 is a Motion Control Shoe especially designed to support the collapsing arch of a severe over-pronator. The Maximum Support Space Trusstic helps to stabilise the heel on impact. The Guidance Line, a groove built into the outsole also encourages a more efficient running gait. This running shoe’s cushioning is different for each sex, to benefit them both.

• Asics Gel Evolution 6 Sole Unit:

The sole unit utilizes all of the latest Asics technological research, but now they are fine-tuned to meet the needs of an over pronator. This model uses revolutionary technology to make the cushioning specific to each gender, with the female model offering a dual density cradle on top of the regular 2 density midsole, ensuring a stable base from which to run for both men and women. The Asics High Abrasion Rubber heel makes the shoe extremely durable.
The rear-foot cushioning system uses silicone gel to minimize the shock of impact and the forefoot cushioning system performs the same kind of protection when toeing off. The support that the Asics Evolution 6 gives good support to severe over-pronators, allowing one to maintain a natural, efficient running gait, even over long distances. The Maximum Support Space Trusstic extends right into the heel for greater stability with a lightweight and well-cushioned run. All this support comes at a price: the weigth. The Asics Evolution 6 is definitely on the heavier side of the spectrum.

Asics Gel 1150

After a multi-year hiatus from running, I reentered the sport in a pair of Nike Structure Triax; not that there was any particular reason I chose these shoes, I just opted for what I was familiar with. Not long after my return to running, I began developing pain in my shins and knees. This brought me to a local running-specific shop to get a gait analysis, which helped us determine that the Triax were too supportive, and that I simply did not need that much motion control.

This is not to say that the Triax are bad shoes; in fact, Nike has made some major improvements to become a forerunner once again in the world of running shoes, and the Triax is a great series for somebody who needs a good amount of support. A more neutral shoe, but one that still had good medial stability, was in order, so I took a look at what they had to offer in the category that was better suited towards me, and selected the Asics 1140, which have since been updated to the 1150. (NOTE: since writing this article, Asics has released the 1160, which is yet to be tested by runningshoesguru.com)

The category in question is called “stability”, and seems to cater to rather generic runners- those with normal arches and who want decent cushioning and support. The 1150 does a great job of providing just what I need, and at a very fair price to boot. At this point I am on my sixth pair of 1140’s or 1150’s, and I don’t plan on making any changes as long as the series stays true to form.
Although the shoe is not necessarily light (especially not in size 13), it isn’t a brick either; as a trainer, it’s right about what you would expect, especially as a stability shoe. For training runs and even some races (I run half and full marathons in the 1150’s), the shoe is the perfect weight; for anything shorter, like a 5k or 10k, I tend towards my racers, and I suggest you do the same.

All in all, this is a great option for someone looking to get into a nice stability shoe that offers all of the accoutrements of the shoes with $100-plus price tags, at a fraction of the cost. These can usually be had for under $80, and there are occasionally some stellar deals out there that will land you in a pair of 1150’s for $60 or less. If you are wise and know what the recently-discontinued model number is (and this holds true for any shoe that receives annual updates), you may be able to get lucky and score some from the bargain basement of some online retailers for insanely low prices. As always, it is a good idea to get a professional fitting to make sure that this is the type of shoe your body-stride combination requires, but if you already wear a stability shoe and are looking for a nice alternative, the 1150 should be high on your list of shoes to try on.

• Asics GT-2160 General Info:

Asics update of Spring 2011 running line continues with the update to the popular stability shoe, the Asics GT-2160 (update of last years’ GT-2150). Updates have been made both to improve the performance and comfort/fit of the shoe, starting by the weigth: the GT-2160 is the lightest of the GT-2100 series.

• Asics GT-2160 Sole Unit:

There are a few shoes that a reference on the market, and the GT-2160 is one of those. Asics sells MANY of these shoes to runners who update year after year. For this reason, they tend to change very little from one issue to the next, especially when it’s up to the basic fit.

The stability elements of the GT-2160 are the DuoMax system, which is a piece of harder foam injected into the mold of the midsole, in the medial (internal) area of the foot. Extending from underneath the ankle to roughly mid-heel. It’s easily recognizable by the darker grey colour (industry standard) and prevents the arch to collapse excessively during the running gait. The next stability feature is Asics’ Space Trusstic Sytem. A TPU (thermal plastic unit) bridge that wraps the midsole right under the arch and offers torsional stability, preventing the foot to rotate unnaturally on its axis. Continuing from last year’s edition (GT-2150), the Trusstic System is different in the mens and in the womens version: the women shoe has a more extended bridge that wraps the foot higher, providing the extra stability women need due to their wider Q-angle.

Two units of Asics Gel (Asics’ cushioning system) can be found in the heel and forefoot. Forefoot is particularly plush. A decoupled heel absorbs the shock accordingly to the actual landing of the foot on the ground and distributes it during the gait.

Asics GT-2160 Outsole

• Asics GT-2160 Upper:

Again, the upper design of the GT-2160 is very similar to the 2150. Syntetic overlays, including the Asics logo, connect the upper to the midsole, wrapping tightly the shoe in place. A rich (and removable, to accommodate orthotics) ComfortDry sockliner provides extra ammortization and anti-microbial technology, which helps reducing bad odours. The heel collar now includes memory foam both on the internal and external sides, as opposed to the internal side only of the previous model.

• Asics GT-2160 Opinion:

The GT-2160 is essentially the GT-2150 with a few updates. This is good, as the 2150 was one of the best shoes of last year and many runner’s favourite series year in year out. It is a great shoe for the mild to moderate overpronator, and a very rich shoe for the 100$ price tag.
Competing directly with the Nike Triax+ 14 and the Adrenaline GTS 11, it offers plenty of support for daily training – a great high-mileage shoe. Asics Gel Kayano 17

• Asics Gel Kayano 17 General Info:

ASICS premium stability plus shoe – the Gel-Kayano 17 gets an update for 2011 that results in a slightly lighter shoe and improved cushioning due to a new sock-liner and better response due to ASICS Guidance Line technology being full length now. New colors are also introduced with the big news being an all black option. Most of the features that made the Gel-Kayano 16’s so popular are back as well.

• Asics Gel Kayano 17 Sole Unit:

Continuing on to the Gel-Kayano 17 from previous Gel-Kayano’s is ASICS Impact Guidance System that is intended to enhance the foot’s natural gait. However ASICS improves the Gel-Kayano 17 by extending the Guidance Line the full length of the shoe resulting in improved responsiveness and gait efficiency. What this all means for the runner is a shoe that feels very connected to the foot and the rest of the body and allows for a efficient and easy running gait. Additionally the Gel-Kayaono’s Discrete Heel Unit adds additional cushioning and stability from previous Kayono’s resulting in some of the best cushioning available in a Stability shoe on the market. Unlike some shoes that use gels and/or other cushioning methods there seems to be very little break-down in the cushioning over time, so while the shoe may appear to be expensive, in my experience it also lasts longer resulting in a lower cost per mile.

Gel-Kayano 17 Heel
Rounding out the Sole of the Gel-Kayano are ASICS midfoot stabilizer called a Space Trustic System and a DuoMax Support System for the midsole and a Dual Density Solyte Lasting in the heal and forefoot for improved fit and comfort. This midsole and forefoot cushioning in conjunction with the improved heel cushioning all contribute to a very cushioned and plush ride – perfect for those looking for such a shoe in a stability package.

Kayano 17 Heel

• Asics Gel Kayano 17 Upper:

Contributing to the ASICS Gel-Kayano 17’s improved cushioning is a new ComforDry Sockliner along with a revised upper that still incorporates ASICS Asymmetrical Lacing Design for an anatomically correct lacing system that is intended to follow the foots natural design for an improved fit. The Asymmetrical Lacing on the Gel-Kayano 17’s is indeed unique (although other ASICS shoes have added this feature recently) and is a big differentiator over other running shoes. If in the past the upper part of your foot felt compressed or pinched by the lacing system of your shoes you may find that with ASICS Asymmetrical Lacing, that this discomfort is a thing of the past as this is a very well fitting shoe with a decent toe-box as well.

Kayano 17 Forefoot

• Asics Gel Kayano 17 Opinion:

Having been around for quite some time, the Gel-Kayano’s have been one of ASICS’ most successful shoes. When it comes to Stability Plus shoes, the Gel-Kayano’s have been at the top of consideration for many runners. Having run in many Gel-Kayano’s from the 13’s through two pairs of 17’s, ASICS has done a very good job of constantly tweaking the shoe and improving on it little by little. While the cushioning of the Kayano’s has always been its strength. With the 16 and the introduction of the Asymmetrical Lacing system, fit and comfort became amongst the best out there.
I would think that there are primarily two types of runners considering the Gel-Kayano 17: 1) Those currently running in the 16’s wondering if this upgrade is worth it, and 2) Those looking for a Stability or Stability Plus training shoe.
For those currently running in the 16, the 17 is definitely an improvement and you’ll love the decreased weight slightly better cushioning and responsiveness. That said if there were close-out deals on the 16’s and you could save some money, I might stock up on some 16s. But if moneys not an issue and you want the latest that ASICS has to offer, you won’t be disappointed in the 17s.
For those considering the Gel-Kayano 17 as a Stability Plus shoe and are ok at parting with $140+/- for a pair, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed unless you are a very light weight runner where the weight of the shoes while improved from the 16s is still a bit on the hefty side and/or if you want a more responsive shoe – which usually means not as plush a ride as the 17s give you.
At 6’2 and 175 lbs running on average of 70 miles a week, I go through a pair of shoes about once every 6 weeks and have already had the pleasure of running in two pairs of 17s and must say they are my favorite especially for that long run or medium long run when you want the most comfortable and cushioned shoe. My 16s have been resigned to shorter runs or trail runs until they wear out
My ‘nits’ with the Kayano’s have been few – one is weight which has been addressed and hopefully ASICS will continue to address this and the other is the breathability of the upper which became a problem on long runs during last year’s hot humid summer. So far no problems with breathability as it is winter so we’ll have to leave the jury out on that one.
Bottom line – If you like the 16’s you’ll love the 17’s and if you are looking for a very well cushioned Stability Plus shoe and are ok with the price – try these on, you may be very very happy

Asics Gel Cumulus 12

• Asics Cumulus 12 General Info:

The Cumulus 12 is Asics’ best selling cushioning shoe. With an updated upper fit and a renewed sole unit that promises to deliver even more cushioning, the 12 continues its tradition of being a solid choice for neutral or underpronating runners.

• Asics Cumulus 12 Sole Unit:

Let’s start by looking at the shoe from the bottom. The outsole is clearly split in two parts: the heel and the forefoot. The heel is decoupled: it is composed of four individual “pods” in order to absorb the shock right where your heel lands on the ground and progressively spread it across the whole area. To both separate and join heel and forefoot we find Asics’ trademark Trusstic System. This plastic shank, which never touches the ground, adds torsional rigidy to the bottom of the shoe, preventing the heel and forefoot to twist innaturally. A common solution in stability shoes, where the added rigidity contributes to the overall control that the shoe offers to the running gait, it is a welcome addition in a cushioning shoe. Asics suggests this shoe to even moderate over-pronators.

Tilting the shoe on the side, we can have a look at the midsole. Within the white foam you can clearly see coloured inserts. They are the Asics Gel pods, the primary cushioning technology on the Cumulus (and most Asics running shoes). In the Cumulus 12, the cushioning has been improved by adding more Gel to the heel by redesigning the midsole around that area. On the forefoot, also more cushioning has been added and it’s different in the mens version compared to the womens version.

The result is a soft, plush ride on a broad base that will help correct some of the runners’ gait mistakes.

• Asics Cumulus 12 Upper:

The upper of the Cumulus sees two main improvements as compared to last years versions: the overlays around the toebox have been redesigned with the aim to provide more comfort to the toes while still hugging them snugly. The main area of improvement though has been the heel: a new heel collar, combined with the use of memory foam (foam that takes the shape of your foot and remembers it).

• Asics Cumulus 12 Opinion:

The Cumulus 12 competes in the very crowded area of 100$ price-point. From Mizuno to Nike and Brooks, you can find great cushioning shoes at this price. What should drive you towards the Cumulus? We believe the Cumulus is a great shoe for beginner runners. It has a soft cushioning that will please many and at the same time has some stability elements (the exceptional Space Trusstic shank, for example) that will help correct the mild-overpronation that could occur when the miles add up.

Asics GT 2150

• Asics GT 2150 General Info:

The GT-2000 series is Asics’ bread and butter stability shoe. Depending on which source you consider, the predecessor of the Asics Gel GT-2150 (the 2140) has been the most sold stability running shoe of 2009 and this should be a good indicator of its popularity As it seems to be the common denominator for this years’ round of updates, Asics made just a few, slight adjustment to the midsole and outsole and worked on improving the fit of the upper, starting by making the shoe slightly lighter than last year’s version.

• Asics GT 2150 Sole Unit:

As announced, not many changes on the GT-2510 sole unit compared to the 2140. Let’s start with what’s unchanged. Two Gel units (bags of sylicone-based material which are Asics’ trademark cushioning technology) are inserted in the heel and forefoot to absorb the shock at the impact. The heel is decoupled in order to absorb the shock on the heel landing without resounding it throughout the whole surface of the sole. The midsole itself is made of Solyte – the same foam used in the majority of Asics’ top of the line running shoes. This for the cushioning side.
On the stability side – which is the category of the GT 2150 – we see Asics’ DuoMoax technology: the insertion of an injection of harder foam into the midsole (clearly visible by the grey colour) that stops the arch from falling excessively inwards during the roll of the foot from heel strike to toe off. Trusstic System: another common stability feature that has Asics probably as the best executor: the brigde of plastic material (TPU) that wraps the midsole under the arch to and provides torsional stability to the midfood area so that toe and heel stay longitudinally aligned during the running gait preventing issues such as sprinkled ankles. Here is the first update we can observe in the 2010 edition: the Space Trusstic is slightly shorter (as in extends less far into the heel) than in the previous model. We didn’t feel much difference, but we assume is part of the solutions to refine the ride and reduce the weight. The Trusstic system is now gender specific, wrapping up higher on the womens’ version to provide that extra stability that women need – as they naturally tend to pronate more due to their wider Q-angle.
Furhter innovations have been made to the outsole (the part that touches the ground). The pattern of flex grooves and pods has been changed so to be more flexible on the lateral side (external) and more supportive on the medial side (internal) of the toe area, adding another layer of stability to the ride.

• Asics GT 2150 Upper:

The upper of the GT 2150 is how we like it: without too many gimmicks and focusing on providing a good fit. The outside has been modified by changing the placement of some of the support overlays, most noticeably on the lateral side of the toebox, helping preventing bunions. The heel collar has been lowered as it seemed to annoy a few runners in the past edition. For the rest, the level of comfort that Asics’ has accustomed its runner to is still provided by a ferw nice details. The ComfortDry sockliner provides additional cushioning right underneat the plant of the foot and it has been treated with an anti-microbial material that prevents bad odours. The heel collar is nicely padded with memory foam, a material that assumes the shape of the foot, granting maximum comfort. The heel counter is secured to the heel section of the midsole through syntetic overlays that encapsulate the heel without feeling too hard on the skin.

• Asics GT 2150 Opinion:

What do we think of the Asics GT 2150? We liked it. Not much changed in the feel versus the GT 2140 and that’s definitely a good thing. The weight has been slightly reduced, too little to actually feel it immediately, but clear as soon as the mileage packs up. How does this shoe performs compared to its major rivals, specifically its biggest sister Asics Gel Kayano 16 and with the Nike Structure Triax+ 13?
The Kayano 16, a part from costing 40 extra dollars, is a heavier, more supportive shoe – suggested to heavier runners or runners with a more serious over pronation problem. If you don’t need the whole support of the Kayano 16, you will will be pleased by the reduced weight of the GT 2150. With the Structure Triax 13 the comparison is much more subjective. The GT 2150 is slightly heavier than the Nike Triax 13, but the support provded is very similar. Nike Focuses the stability features in a Dual Density foam injection (same tech as the DuoMax mentioned earlier) that extends further in the heel, while Asics extends further towards the forefoot. Asics’ plastic shank (the Trusstic System) is also much more constructed and firm than Nike’s.
Overall the GT 2150 is a great shoe – suggested as everyday training running shoe for mild to medium over pronators.

Asics Gel Kayano 16

• Asics Gel Kayano 16 General Info:

The Gel Kayano 16 is Asics’ top of the line stability running shoe. At a hefty price-tag, this shoe is packed with many of Asics’ best features, all to provide a comfortable, stable run. We have a look at those feature in the review.

• Asics Gel Kayano 16 Sole Unit:

The sole unit of the Kayano 16 is new, but is not too different from the sole of the 15.
Stability is mainly provided thanks to the insert of DuoMax in the midsole: DuoMax is a firmer foam injected in the medial (internal) side of the sole unit, right under the arch and proceeding half way backwards towards the heel. It is clearly visible as the darker grey insert in the internal side of the sole unit. The arch of an overpronator would tend to collapse inwards during the roll of the foot; the DuoMax insert stops this collapse and helps the runner keep a correct gait. In addition to the dual density foam insertion, the under-arch part of the shoe presents Asics’ trademark Space Trusstic System: a plug of plastic material that wraps the midsole, preventing it from deforming laterally or trasversally, again providing a stable transition from heel to toe. Almost every shoe company has plastic shanks around the arch, but in our opinion the Asics Space Trusstic is the best on the market.
The heel has many pods, designed to absorb the shock differently in different parts – depending on your footstrike. We are not completely sure about this detail, that Asics keeps accentuating year over year. A lighter runner might actually find it wobbly and less stable than ideal.
So far, no major changes between the Kayano 15 and the Kayano 16.

The area where Asics focused its efforts has been the gender differentiation (re: best running shoes for women). The women sole unit is softer thanks to the Solyte foam under the ball of the foot. It is more deeply carved in the forefoot, to be more flexible. The heel is 3mm higher than it is on the mens version to take pressure away from the achilles and help prevent achilles’ tendinitis.

On top of the stability aspects, there is Asics’ cushioning technology, Gel, both in the heel and forefoot.

All in all, the Kayano 16′s sole unit is a very stable, supportive shoe. The strong support and the added cushioning make it interesting also for heavier runners.

• Asics Gel Kayano 16 Upper:

The Gel Kayano 16 features the asymmetrical lacing design that Asics introduced in 2009. The idea behind it is to follow more naturally the bony part of the top of the foot so to fit more snugly and avoid irritation. The asymmetrical lacing in the Asics Gel Kayano 16 has been tweaked based on the feedback received on the Kayano 15. One recurring negative feedback was that this lacing design ended unnaturally on the toebox; luckily the overlays around the toebox have been redesigned so to be more comfortable around the toes.
The upper includes all the features that we expect from a top of the line Asics running shoe: a comfort dry sockliner (removable to accommodate orthotics), great lining and memory foam for the collar and heel. The fit is for a medium or slightly narrow fit.

• Asics Gel Kayano 16 Opinion:

The Gel Kayano 16 is Asics’ reference shoe for stability. It’s the premium, heavier and more stable version of the very successful Asics GT 2150. The Kayano is a shoe with great support, even though we would prefer a little less cushioning in the heel for a stability shoe. It is not a lightweight shoe but the overall feeling is quite comfortable, both thanks to the great stability offered and the high quality upper.
Gender differentiation is now a key element for sports companies while designing their running shoes and we can see this year Asics really took it a step further.
We feel to suggest the Asics Gel Kayano 16 to runners who over-pronate and in particular to heavier runners, both male and female.

• Asics Gel Nimbus 12 General Info:

Summer 2010 brings a new update to Asics’ top of the line cushioning shoe, the Gel Nimbus 12. The updates have been focused on improving the cushioning, the stability features and the upper comfort. Good news for women: the Nimbus 12 features gender-specific engineering.

• Asics Gel Nimbus 12 Sole Unit:

The Asics Nimbus is one of those shoes with a following of loyal runners who update their shoe year after year, model after model. The reason for all these followers has always been the great, soft cushioning provided by the Nimbus. The cushioning is mainly provided by the use of the Gel technology: goblets of Asics’ trademark silicone based Gel have been inserted in the midsole both in the heel and in the forefoot, pretty much as Nike does with the Air inserts. The second feature contributing to the cushioning is the use of Solyte foam for the midsole. This material is very light for the amount of cushioning it provides.

One of the characteristics of the Nimbus 12 is that it merges its cushioning elements to a few guidance/support features. This is important, because a shoe with much cushioning and no support could incentivize an uncorrect gait. The base of the shoe is wider, to provide more stability. The heel is decoupled -a standard solution nowadays on premium running shoes- in order to provide the right amount of shock absorption only where it matters. This is the first of the gender-specific engineered parts of the shoe. The heel is 3mm higher in the women version, to relieve stress on the achille’s.

A very strong element of the Nimbus is the Space Trusstic System (Asics’ name for the transition bridge), the plastic shank that embraces the midsole under the arch and provides torsional stability between the heel and the forefoot, to avoid unnatural twisting of the foot. We see that the Nimbus’ main competitor, the Nike Zoom Vomero, also incorporates a shank: a shoe with so much cushioning needs some stability too. The Asics Trusstic system, though, instead of being on the medial side only takes all the under-arch area of the midsole and it is built of a more solid plastic compound. This element is also specifically engineered for mens and womens in two different versions.

A new feature of the Nimbus 12 is the Guidance Line (a technology earlier found in some walking shoes): a vertical flex groove, extending from heel to toe, that guides the foot during the gait.

• Asics Gel Nimbus 12 Upper:

The upper of the Nimbus 12 is clearly feature-rich as it’s clear by looking at the shoe, which looks very busy. Starting from the inside, a very well executed detail is the collar and heel lining, filled with memory foam in order to assume the shape of your heel and lock comfortably around the foot. There’s no question, that is a nicely executed detail.

Asics introduced last year their asymmetrical lacing design: instead of being in a straight line in the middle of the foot, the shoelaces are on a curved line that follows the natural shape of the foot bones. Although not equally loved by everybody, this solution to lock the shoe more more snugly around the foot seems to be appreciated by the majority of runners. Asics takes the concept this year one notch further by placing individual eyelids, each one indipendent from the others. We really like this solution, even though it requires many overlays to be placed all around the upper in order to connect those individual eyelids to the midsole.

• Asics Gel Nimbus 12 Opinion:

With a great amount of soft, plush cushioning, the Asics Gel Nimbus 12 is one of the reference shoes for the cushioning category. We find interesting that so much attention has been put into adding stability elements to the Nimbus: this is a shoe that can be worn by moderate over-pronators, runners that are usually confined to harder, less springy shoes.
The natural rival of the Nimbus is the Nike Vomero. Both shoes deliver probably the softest cushioning in the market; the Nimbus is slightly less bouncy than the Vomero, but adds more stability so to be appealing to a wider range of runners.
Definitely reccomended to Neutral runners, The Asics Gel Nimbus 12 will be a pleasant surprise to moderate over-pronators as well, or to neutral runners whose form deteriorates with the mileage.
