The Asics Gel Cumulus has been around for a very long time. It’s one of the Asics staple shoes. It’s known for being a solid alternative for the pricey Gel Nimbus.
I was a die-hard Gel Nimbus fan for years. It was the only shoe I would ever think about buying. But once they started to lack in their upgrades every year and still wanted you to pay top dollar for that name, I decided to venture out and try new things.
This led me to my first pair of Gel-Cumulus years ago, but like the Nimbus, their upgrades became stagnant. Long story short it has been years since my last pair and when I tested the Gel Cumulus 24s out I was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked them.
Here are some facts about the latest model. It weighs 10.1 oz. (286 g) for men and 8.8 oz. (250 g) for women. They have an 8mm heel drop and will cost you $130.
I think this is the price that is reasonable considering the quality and the market. They fit true to size but run slightly narrow in the mid-foot. Have no fear, they are offered in a WIDE option.
It’s a daily trainer that is geared towards the runner who under pronates or who has a neutral foot strike.
Since last year’s model, it has made some changes such as the Cumulus now has a full-length FlyteFoam Blast midsole and the upper has been nicely updated.
If you are looking for something budget-friendly in the same brand I highly suggest the Asics Gel Contend 7. It’s a fantastic budget-friendly friendly shoe.
ASICS Gel Cumulus 24 First Impressions
When I first opened the box and took a look at them I immediately thought they looked extremely comfortable. I received the gray, black and white color. They are not anything fancy or flashy but just good-looking simple shoe.
I know ASICS offers them in many other colors so you have options to choose from. Looking at them you’ll notice the FlyteFoam in the sole of the shoe.
When I first put them on I instantly knew that I wouldn’t have any problems on my first run regarding comfort. It’s all softness from the top of your foot to the bottom.
If I could describe it in any way I would say that it’s like walking on marshmallows!
The heel counter is built up and gives your heel a cozy hug that is welcomed.
Hands down they are the most cushioned shoe I have in my rotation.
I did a 6-mile run that was moderately paced and couldn’t come up with one negative issue except maybe they are too soft. If that can even be a complaint?
When you do take them out for speed workouts they do lack. Not bad, but not a shoe I would pick for racing or track workouts.
ASICS Gel Cumulus 24 Sole Unit
The midsole of the shoe is another thing that has been upgraded since the last version.
It offers their FF Blast cushioning. This midsole foam was developed to help create a softer landing and develop a more energized toe-off. In the midsole, FLYTEFOAM cushioning is also added to help with shock absorption. It’s noted to be lighter than most standard midsoles.
On the outsole of the shoe, you will find AHARPLUS Rubber. This material is strategically placed in the heel area to help with traction and will last you the miles.
In the forefoot area, you’ll notice the New ASICS Lite outsole rubber. This new outsole is stronger and the material weighs less than most standard outsoles. I tested them out on various surfaces and conditions and had no problems with traction.
ASICS Gel Cumulus 24 Upper Unit
Like a lot of brands, ASICS has stayed true to its sustainability initiative and made the upper with recycled materials to help reduce waste and carbon emissions.
Like all ASICS uppers, there is never any discomfort. It’s made of engineered mesh that perfectly holds your foot in place while allowing your feet room to breathe.
ASICS uses its signature 3D Space Construction technology. This is gender-specific and will address the differences between men’s and women’s feet and will provide the correct amount of support throughout the entire upper.
The upper keeps the foot in place but is not as secure as the Gel Nimbus 24 in my opinion. It offers a plush, gusseted tongue and heel collar. No issues with slipping in the heel area. The laces are standard and once tied they stay in place.
ASICS Gel Cumulus 24 Conclusion
The ASICS Gel Cumulus 24 is a fantastic addition for runners looking for a cushioned, comfortable shoe for daily training. If you want a shoe that will last you, this shoe is your ticket.
In comparison to the $160 Asics Gel Nimbus 24, it’s really hard to tell the difference in the way they ride and for me, the price difference will always help make my decision. Fans of this shoe will be pleased with the updates ASICS has done.
