Skechers GOrun Ride 5 – Pair

When I first learned I had opportunity to review a Skechers running shoe I was very excited and eager to see how Skechers stacked up in the running shoe world.

I checked them out online and will say I was not so excited to see the color options available. The color options seemed more kid friendly. Upon unboxing, I was relieved to see I received one of the better color options in my opinion.

Moving past the look of the shoe, I quickly noticed how light they felt and was ready to see how they felt on my feet and most importantly while running.

Skechers GOrun Ride 5 - Medial Side

Skechers GOrun Ride 5 – Medial Side

The midsole of this shoe is composed of Resalyte cushioning. Resalyte is Skechers proprietary lightweight compound with memory retention common to all of their performance shoe models.

This cushioning gives a firm and responsive ride to this shoe. This latest edition is said to increase the cushioning to give additional impact protection and response.

I found this lightweight shoe to be responsive but I must stress how firm a ride it gives. Another quality of this midsole is Skechers M-strike technology.

This shoe is designed to encourage mid-foot striking by placing slightly firmer EVA foam in the middle of the midsole/outsole. Another feature are GOImpulse sensors placed on the circular pods found on the outsole.

These have been repositioned with this edition to increase the responsiveness of this shoe. I found this shoe to provide smooth transitions but for me the ride was so firm that they made the bottom of my feet hurt while running.

This shoe lacks the comfort found in many other lightweight responsive trainers. Also I found the outsole to have some quick initial shredding which makes me question the durability of the shoe and the mileage they can handle.

This shoe also comes with a removable insole to give it an option to be more of a minimalist shoe. This gave the shoe a rather flat feel in my opinion with less comfort so I opted to keep the insole in for my runs.

Skechers GOrun Ride 5 Upper Info

Skechers GOrun Ride 5 - Toe

Skechers GOrun Ride 5 – Toe

The GOrun Ride 5 has a synthetic mesh upper with 3D printed overlays. I would describe the look of this shoe as youthful.

As I mentioned before some of the colorways are not quite what I prefer but I do like the overall design of the shoe, the placement of the ‘S’ as well as the reflective materials added.

The upper is lightweight, breathable and comfortable though the fit was not quite as good for me as other shoes. I like a shoe to be snug, not too tight and not too loose and this shoe did not hug my foot properly.

It is designed with an oblique last to provide a roomy toe box which I think for me was a little too wide. Other runners may find this extra room quite nice. The tongue is wide and well cushioned and added comfort also.

This shoe also has a unique feature in the heel known as the Quick Fit. A small loop, intentionally finger-sized, has been placed in the heel to make putting on this shoe easy.

It was quite handy and most importantly did not compromise the fit of the heel nor the ability to hold my heel.

Skechers GOrun Ride 5 Conclusions

Skechers markets this shoe as “the perfect ride, anytime”. While I agree the design of this shoe makes it versatile, it lacked qualities to me to make it stand out and I didn’t find myself reaching for these shoes before my next run.

While they were light and responsive they did not give the ground feel I like for workouts. Since they also made the bottom of my feet hurt I shyed away from them for long runs and recovery runs.

I ran in these shoes most when my legs were fresh and/or just needed to log some miles. While not a bad shoe to have in the rotation, I will stay with other brands for now as my go-to trainers.

We thank the nice people at Skechers for sending us a pair of GOrun Ride 5 to test. This did not influence the outcome of the review, written after running more than 50 miles in them.
