New runners and runners looking for a low-cost option for speedwork should consider Contend, also those who wear through the outsoles of other entry-level ASICS.
Do not buy Contend for a soft ride or if you log over 20 miles a week regularly. This is not a great shoe to accomodate added orthotics.
Gel-Contend stands alongside Gel-Excite from ASICS as entry-level, lower cost running shoes. This doesn’t make them bad, just means they don’t have the brand’s top technology materials and often aren’t as durable.
For runners logging fewer than 25 miles a week, there’s little benefit in spending more, anyway.
Contend and Excite are both quality shoes; the difference is more cushion in Excite. You’ll get a softer ride in Excite but a snappier ride geared towards speed in Contend.
Contend is a neutral running shoe: 8 mm drop, light and lively ride.
It is basic in construction with not much under the arch, but it gets the job done in traditional upper construction and average durability.
Similar shoes include Nike Winflo, adidas Duramo, Brooks Anthem, Saucony Cohesion, and Nike Downshifter.
The fit is true to size for a medium-narrow foot.
After running in GT-2000, Contend felt light and freeing for speed intervals. The support features in GT-2000 decrease its quickness.
A jacquard mesh upper on Contend is breathable and flexible enough to adapt to foot shape while still being secure enough for a helpful lock-down.
A decent quality internal heel counter (rigid cap around the heel) guides the foot forward; logo overlays secure lock-down, and a cap around the toes adds durability.
The comfortably supportive fit reminds me of the older-style GT-2000, meaning it is medium-narrow without pinching my forefoot, without going up half size.
Fit is true-to-size.
A cushioned Ortholite sock-liner is attached to the base. The tongue offers low but adequate padding to protect the top of the foot, with vent holes for breathability.
Rounded laces cross under a generous loop at the top of the lacing to keep the tongue from creeping down if laced loosely.
There are many attractive colorways from bold eye-catchers to muted shades, low reflectivity.
Like Excite, Contend features AMPLIFOAM+ midsole cushioning made of EVA but with a few millimeters lower stack height. This stack height makes a big difference as Excite is softer while Contend has a springier ride.
Contend’s midsole contains strategic GEL® technology in the heel for shock absorption and cushion.
Additionally, a TRUSSTIC® support unit in the midsole made up of a double-layer of carbon-reinforced structure brings stability while allowing your feet to move freely—it only becomes rigid if the foot rolls too far inward.
The shoe offers the basic support of a neutral shoe.
Compared with Excite, a double-thickness of rubber covers much of the sole which makes Contend’s outsole the more durable of the two.
GUIDANCE LINE™ technology adds a touch of flexibility to the foot-plant that sets it apart from comparable shoes like Duramo.
Contend is a great running shoe for those who like to mix some miles into a more broad workout routine. With a medium-low stack height it is firm enough for lunges and squats as well as running, and it is best for short, quick miles.

Been hitting the gym 4x a week with these for my cardio and cross-training. Coming from Nike Reacts, these feel pretty stiff. They’re okay for the price but starting to look beat up after just 2 months. Probably gonna need something tougher for my next gym shoe.

Getting back into running after a few years off – planning on short runs around the neighborhood 2-3 times a week. Would these be good for a beginner, or should I spend the extra cash on Cumulus? I wear size 10 in regular Nike sneakers if that helps with sizing.

I originally bought these as gym shoes but have ended up doing quite a bit of running in them. For a budget shoe, they’ve really impressed me. The responsive ride is perfect for my 3-5 mile runs, though I wouldn’t want to go much further given the minimal cushioning. They excel during speed work – did some 400m repeats and they felt snappy and efficient. Coming from more cushioned shoes like the Nimbus, these definitely feel more connected to the ground. After 100 miles, they’re holding up well despite some visible wear on the outsole. For the price point, these deliver exceptional value.

After putting 150 miles on the Gel-Contend 9, I’m impressed with its performance as a budget-friendly trainer. The quick transitions and efficient toe-off make it perfect for my gym-to-run workouts. The lock down is notably secure – much better than the Contend 8. While cushioning is minimal, it’s responsive enough for my 3-5 mile runs. Compared to other entry-level shoes like the Nike Downshifter, the build quality feels more premium. My only concern is durability – I’m seeing some outsole wear already. Still, at $70 it’s a great value for newer runners or those needing a supplementary training shoe.

The Gel-Contend 9 really impressed me as an entry-level trainer. I’ve logged about 200 miles in them, mostly for 3-5 mile runs and gym sessions. The responsive cushioning works great for my neutral gait, though I wouldn’t use them beyond 10K. They feel snappier than the similarly priced Nike Revolution. The lockdown is exceptional – no heel slip even during sprints. While the durability isn’t amazing, at $70 they’re an incredible value. Perfect for newer runners or as a rotation shoe. I’ve recommended them to several gym buddies looking to add running. Solid performer for delivering quality basics at a budget price.

I’ve logged over 120 miles in the Gel-Contend 9, primarily using them for my speed workouts and gym sessions. At $70, these shoes offer exceptional value – the comfort and responsiveness rival shoes twice the price. The low-cushion design provides excellent ground feel for track intervals, and I’ve found them particularly effective for 400m and 800m repeats. While not ideal for long runs, they excel in mixed training sessions. Compared to the previous version, the upper breathability has improved significantly. The lockdown is notably better than budget offerings from Nike and New Balance in this price range. Some wear showing on the outsole, but that’s expected given the price point.

Looking for a shoe that can handle my 3x weekly gym sessions plus some quick 5Ks. My feet run a bit wide and my local gym has those older treadmills that can be rough on shoes. Anyone using the Gel-Contends for similar workouts? Had the Gel-Excite before but ready to try something new.

Picked these up for my HIIT classes and occasional 5k – can’t beat the price! Not as cushy as my Ghost 14s but they work great for the gym. Starting to show wear after 2 months but for $70 I’m not complaining.

Finally decided to start running after walking 5Ks for years! Looking at these since they’re budget-friendly. I’m doing Couch to 5K right now (about 2-3 miles, 3x weekly) in some old cross trainers that are killing my feet. Anyone with high arches try these? Don’t want to spend a fortune while I’m just starting out but definitely need proper running shoes!

Total beginner here planning to start running 2-3 times a week. Would these be a good starter shoe? My budget is tight but I also don’t want something that’ll fall apart in a month. Any other options I should look at in this price range?

NewRunner, I think this will be a great shoe for you! I name a couple others early in the review that you could consider as well, but I think Contend is a good one. Let us know how it (or whichever you choose) works for you!

Looking to start running with the C25K program and these caught my eye – seems like a good beginner shoe? Got slightly flat feet and my buddy recommended these over the Nike Revolution. Anyone using these for walking/jogging intervals? Would love some feedback before I spend the money!

The ASICS Gel Contend 9 is a solid entry-level shoe that really shines for beginners or casual runners. The cushioning is soft and reliable, ideal for shorter runs and daily wear, though heavy mileage runners might find the durability and responsiveness a bit lacking. What impressed me in the review was the focus on the value for its price—it’s nice to see a brand delivering quality at an affordable level. Taking everything into account, including fit, stability, and price-point, I’d say this is a consistent 8/10 for its category.
