This shoe is for the individual who is looking for a daily trainer that can be used for workouts in the gym, short to mid-distance runs, and track workouts. Perfect for those who are looking for just one pair of shoes that does it all.
I would not recommend these to a buyer looking for a longer-distance running shoe. I have taken them for 10-mile runs but the midsole isn’t built up the way I prefer it like those max-cushioned running shoes.
The On Cloud X4 is an extra flexible training shoe that works well for any type of workout. I even like wearing them for short runs or speed and agility-type workouts. Their overall stability is fantastic.
They are On’s fourth iteration of the Cloud X . Looking back at last year’s version you will notice little to no difference. Checking On’s website about the shoe gives you little to no information about many updates.
They are on the pricier side for $150 but that is becoming more of a standard price. On creates shoes that are of the highest quality and top technology.
I can attest that I have not tried a pair of Ons that I didn’t like or that didn’t last. Weighing in at 11.15oz, they feel very lightweight. They have a 7mm drop to them with a slight arch support but I don’t think they would be a good choice for an individual with flatter feet.
Some of their signature technology include the X-shaped Speedboard, the Helion super form, the midfoot cage, breathable recycled mesh upper, plush materials, and a runner outsole for excellent traction.
On makes their shoes with “clouds” or pods on the underfoot. These collapse on impact and expand on take-off. Depending on the shoe, the pods have more or less give to them. The Cloudtec technology combined with a firmer plate, gives the Cloud X4 a snappy feel to them.
The Nike Interact Run is a similar shoe I have recently tested out. They both offer a comfortable and stable ride with a breathable mesh upper.
You could also compare them to the Altra Outroad but without the heavier tread. Both have a nice ground feel to them that allows you to feel confident in making direction changes without feeling like you will roll an ankle.
Other popular training shoes that a nice choices would be the Nike Metcon and the Reebok Nano. You can expect to pay close to the same price but I think the comfort and versatility that the Cloud X4 offer makes them the best choice.
My first impression after opening the box was a positive one. On always impresses me with their style and build. I tested out the previous model and knew what to expect. They look almost identical to the past model. I couldn’t tell from just looking at them what was upgraded.
Putting them on for the first time, I noticed how stable, cushioned, yet firm they were. I tend to like a firmer training shoe. What’s new with X4? From just a performance standpoint, there isn’t anything that sticks out but it is more comfortable than the X3.
The tongue and the boot are updated ever so slightly. You will notice that they have added some thickness to the tongue. The boot or around the ankle also has some more padding to it. This gives the shoe more overall comfort which makes it easy to wear all day.
My first workout in them was a mix of various body-weighted exercises with running between sets. There was no need for a break in period. They have a socklike feel to them and give you just the right amount of cushion. Each exercise I felt confident and secure in knowing I would have no issues with my feet sliding or feeling unstable. I do have issues with certain training shoes that make me feel like I am jamming my toes toward the front of the toe box. That is not the case with the X4’s.
I have also taken them out for a few runs on the road and gravel paths. Each run was under 5K and they performed well.
Another feature that can be overlooked would be the Dual-density Sockliner. Although minor, it adds an extra layer of comfort and support that makes it a shoe I can wear for hours and hours without discomfort.
The midsole has its signature On brand midsole look to it with one layer of the iconic “cloud.” It is made up of Helion super foam, which provides cushioning for soft landings and comfort. This particular foam was made to be extremely durable as well as lightweight.
Making them able to be used for a range of workouts, from lifting sessions to runs. Along with the foam, the shoe has an X-shaped Speedboard that allows the forefoot to be flexible. In turn, you’re able to have an explosive toe-off.
Looking at the outsole, it’s made up of the CloudTec Outsole. I have taken them out on various surfaces and weather conditions. They perform remarkably well with no slipping and deliver a smooth and stable ride.
Overall, the On Cloud X 4 stands out for its versatility and comfort, making it a solid choice if you want a shoe that can handle both running and various gym activities.

Been a Cloud X 3 fan for the past year and just checked out the 4s at my local shop. Love how they beefed up the upper – feels way more premium. Those CloudTec pods definitely have more pop to them. Yeah, they’re expensive compared to my old Nikes, but I use them for both running and HIIT classes, so I can kind of justify the price. Just wish they had a bit more cushion for those Sunday long runs!

Been hitting the gym in these for a few weeks after wearing out my Cloud 5s. Gotta say, the new Helion foam has more pop for HIIT workouts but feels noticeably firmer. Perfect for my CrossFit sessions but wouldn’t take them on anything longer than a 5K. Yeah they’re pricey, but my last pair lasted forever so I’m cool with it.

Tried these on at my local running store yesterday. The fit was great but $150 seems steep compared to similar shoes. The Nike Pegasus is $10 less and has more cushioning. Might wait for a sale before pulling the trigger.

After putting 150 miles on the Cloud X 4, I can confidently say these are a solid daily trainer. The stability is impressive – much better than the X3s which felt wobbly on uneven surfaces. I’ve used these for everything from 5k tempo runs to gym sessions. The responsive cushioning is perfect for runs under 10 miles, though I prefer my Hoka Cliftons for longer distances. The build quality is exceptional – typical On craftsmanship. My only gripe is the $150 price tag, which seems steep compared to competitors like the Brooks Ghost. That said, the versatility makes it worth it for me. The upper breathes well and provides good lockdown.

Having put the Cloud X 4 through its paces over the last two months, I can say it’s a significant improvement over the X 3. The CloudTec elements provide better stability without sacrificing the responsive feel that On is known for. I’ve used these primarily for gym sessions and shorter runs up to 6 miles. The Helion superfoam, while firmer than other brands, offers enough protection for these distances while maintaining excellent ground feel. Perfect for speed work and cross-training, though I wouldn’t recommend them for marathon training. Durability has been excellent so far, especially compared to my previous Nike Free RN. The premium price is justified by the versatility and build quality.

After testing the Cloud X 4 extensively over the past month (about 80 miles), I’m impressed with the versatility. I’ve used them for everything from track workouts to 10-mile runs. The stability is exceptional – much better than my previous Nike Free Run. While they lack the cushioning for marathon training, they excel at tempo runs and gym sessions. The build quality is outstanding – typical On attention to detail. They feel more responsive than the Cloud X 3, though still firm compared to more cushioned trainers. Perfect for runners who want a do-it-all shoe for shorter distances and cross-training.

My Nike Frees are on their last legs and I need something for both the gym and quick runs. Anyone use these for HIIT workouts? Need something stable enough for burpees but still good for a quick 5K.

I gave these shoes a go, and they are pretty solid! The upper feels snug, and I didn’t have any issues with rubbing or discomfort on longer runs. I also really appreciate the lightweight design; it helped me stay fast on my feet. That said, the forefoot felt a little too stiff for my liking, which reduced some of the ground feel I usually prefer in my trainers. Thanks for the detailed review, it helped in making my purchase decision!

For me, these shoes strike almost the right balance between cushion and responsiveness. I felt supported on longer runs thanks to the dual-density midsole, but at times, they didn’t have quite the bounce I was hoping for during sprints. Overall, they’re still a solid, versatile shoe, maybe just not perfect for intense speedwork. Comfortable fit, though, and I like the minimalist design!
