RunKeeper iPhone Application

RunKeeper iPhone Application

A new, useful and cool application has been recently launched for iPhone, and it’s already on everybody’s mouth.

RunKeeper is an iPhone application that enables you to use the built-in GPS in your iPhone 3G to track all of your outdoor fitness activities, including duration, distance, pace, speed, elevation, calories burned, and path traveled on a map. You can store all of your historical activities on the RunKeeper website and share them with your friends!

The better news? It is available in two versions: a free version (fully functional) and a pro version with advanced functionality.

How does it work?
All you have to do is download the application to your iPhone 3G and you’re ready to go! Install the application, go outdoors and press “Start”. RunKeeper will lock on a GPS signal and start tracking your position and time. Lock the iPhone (with the top button) and start running, biking, hiking, walking….

Once you’re finished just press “Stop” on the application and your activity will be saved.

The tracking of your activity
RunKeeper will keep a list of your activities on your iPhone, and you can quickly check how far you have run, at what speed, what was your pace (mins/km) and will even track your path on a map!

But the real candies are on the web.

RunKeeper_Web

Once you register on the RunKeeper website, your activities will be automatically synced from your phone to your web profile (wireless) and you will have a whole new degree of information, such as the details per single mile, a graph of your speed and altitude in function of the time…

Does it Work?

We tested RunKeeper on a couple of runs and bike rides. The GPS reception was good even in the pocket of the bike jersey. It happened a couple of times that the GPS thought we were a couple of streets away from where we really were, but once you log on the website you can edit the route (no cheating!!) and correct those eventual mistakes.
Battery lasts enough for a marathon if you fully charge it before going and lock the screen while running. We haven’t tried keeping the screen on all the time, but if you have an iPhone you are sensible with your battery life already…

The web interface lets you choose what kind of activity you tracked (run, bike, hike etc) and allows you to mark each one either as private or shared with your friends.

Differences between the Free and Pro version

The Free version is fully functional. It has ads (a little bar underneath the interface) and the pro is ad-free. The pro version has more advanced functions such as adio cues (will tell you your progresses in your headphones) and has the possibility to download workouts to the phone, and to have your personal trainer with you (kinda like the nike+). The application is relatively new, and new functions to both the free and pro versions are added quite frequently.

You can listen to your music while running AND have RunKeeper track your activity. In the free version, you have to start your iPod before start tracking and then start the RunKeeper application. In the Pro version, you can associate a playlist to your workout and it will start playing automatically when you start tracking.

Opinion

Go download it ! And upgrade to the Pro version if you enjoy the free one: good ideas need to be supported!
